Deadlines
With the exception of the Four-Summer Master of
Music in Music Education Program, graduate music
programs begin in the fall quarter (September).
The application deadline for fall-quarter admission is
January 15. Students are encouraged to complete the
application well before the deadline and are responsible
for assuring that supporting materials are received on
time. Applications received after the deadline will be
considered only if the applicable program has vacancies.

In selected areas, graduate study may begin in the winter
or spring quarter if vacancies occur. Students wishing
to apply for winter- or spring-quarter entry should
contact the director of graduate admission for admis-
sion counseling; applications are due by October 1
and January 1, respectively. Institutional financial aid
is typically not available for students who enter at any
time other than the fall. Applicants from countries
other than the United States may apply for fall-quarter
entrance only.
Several graduate music programs require preliminary
screening tapes (audio and/or VHS video) before an
invitation to the required on-campus audition can
be issued.
For required tape content and length for each program,
see Program Admission Requirements below.
Program Admission Requirements
The faculty for each program within the school has
specified a set of requirements to facilitate evaluation
of applicants. All application requirements must be
completed and received by the application deadline.
Composition (DMus) Applicants apply for admission
to the doctor of music program. Students may obtain a
master of music after one year of study or, with faculty
recommendation, continue their studies toward the
doctor of music degree. Applicants must submit a port-
folio consisting of scores (and preferably audiotapes) of
three to five representative compositions. Compositions
should incorporate a variety of media and show familiar-
ity with current trends. Applicants must also include a
complete list of works and composition performances,
an analysis of a musical work composed no earlier than
1950, and a second analytical or music history paper.
Conducting (MMus and DMus) Applicants must
submit a VHS video screening tape by January 15
showing their conducting skills in both rehearsal and
performance situations. Audiotapes of performances
may be submitted as well, especially if the audio quality
of the videotape is not superior. Candidates whose
screening tapes are favorably reviewed will be invited
to an on-campus audition, to take place in February
or March (please consult the Audition Information
Guide for specific dates). The on-campus audition
consists of an ensemble conducting session (see con-
ducting audition information materials for repertoire),
interviews with faculty, and diagnostic tests in theory,
history, and aural skills.
Jazz pedagogy (MMus) Applicants must submit
an essay of interest and an audio and/or VHS video
audition tape showing evidence of their competence
in jazz improvisation, jazz composition and arranging,
or jazz pedagogy.
Music education, music education and piano
pedagogy (MMus) Applicants must submit an essay,
a resum, and additional evidence of teaching ability
as outlined below.
Essay Three to four pages, double-spaced, on one of
the following topics:
From your perspective as a specialist in instrumental,
choral, or general music, what learning do you
attempt to impart to your students? What do you
hope they will retain after they leave your charge?
In what important ways might the profession of
music education be different in the year 2050?
In what ways does it seem not likely to change?
What do you consider the most pressing problems
facing the music education profession today? How do
you see yourself contributing to the solution of some
of these problems?
Resum Should reflect the candidates professional
accomplishments to date (degrees, positions, profes-
sional activities, additional teaching activities, counseling,
other leadership experience).
Additional evidence of teaching ability May take any
of the following forms:
a VHS videotape of the candidate working with
students in either a class or performance setting
selected programs of performances the candidate
has presented with student groups
a selected portfolio of teaching materials such as
lesson or unit plans, evaluation material, and class
handouts the candidate has found highly effective
Music education and piano pedagogy applicants
especially recent graduates and others with minimal evi-
dence of formal teaching experience are encouraged
to audition. Applicants who wish to pursue private
instrumental or vocal study will be required to audition.
Musicology (MMus) Applicants must submit a lengthy
sample of their writing on music, preferably a recent
paper presenting results of musical analysis, biblio-
graphic research, or other appropriate work.
Music technology (MMus) Applicants must submit
samples of computer programs, compositions, or
other applicable materials demonstrating their skills
in applying technology to music.
Music theory (MMus) Applicants must submit
evidence of analytical and research ability in the form
of a paper prepared for an undergraduate course
or specifically for the admission committee. Tapes
and/or composition scores may also be submitted
if appropriate.

available, evidence of directing ability as outlined below.
An interview with admission committee members and
an audition of directing skills will also be required.
Applicants may request an audition time by using the

Essay Three to four pages, double-spaced, on the
candidates goals and interest in opera production/
direction; must include a production concept for an
opera the candidate has directed or would like to direct.

a director or voice performer with whom the candidate
has worked.
Evidence of directing ability (if available) In the form of
a VHS videotape of scenes from an opera, musical, or
play the candidate has directed.
Piano performance and pedagogy (MMus and DMus)
Applicants must submit an outline of their pedagogical
background and a list of literature and material used
in their teaching. Candidates with teaching experience,
either professional or in a pedagogy course, should
submit a VHS videotape of their skills in either of the
following contexts:

tary or intermediate level. The tape should include the
first lesson on a new work and continuing instruction
on a work in progress.
A 20-minute lesson with a college or adult piano class
consisting of either nonpiano music majors or nonmusic
majors.
Applicants who teach in a language other than English
must submit a VHS videotaped discussion of their stu-
dents and teaching or of their career goals and interest
in a graduate degree. The segment should follow the
teaching demonstration, and the candidate must speak
in English.

plete the requirements specified in Performance below.
Performance (MMus)
Applicants for master of music in performance programs
(organ, piano, piano performance and pedagogy, string,
string performance and pedagogy, voice, and wind and
percussion) must request an audition time from the
Office of Music Admission and Financial Aid by using
the Performance Audition Request postcard enclosed
with this booklet. Auditions are held on campus and
throughout the United States during January and
February. Candidates who are not able to audition in
person may instead submit a high-quality audiotape.
Applicants for the master of music in flute, voice, or
percussion performance programs must also submit
a preliminary screening tape of at least 20 minutes
of music representing different styles and historical
periods no later than four weeks prior to the proposed
audition date.

Performance (DMus and certificate in performance)
Applicants to doctor of music in performance programs
(organ, piano, piano and collaborative arts, piano
pedagogy, string, voice, and wind and percussion) and
certificate in performance programs (organ, piano, string,
voice, and wind and percussion) must submit a resum
and a preliminary screening tape by January 15. The tape
should contain 45 to 60 minutes of music (45 minute
for collaborative arts candidates; see requirements be-
low) representing different styles and historical periods.
Additionally, applicants to these programs must submit
a list of performance-ready works and a repertoire list of
all pieces they have studied or performed.
Applicants whose preliminary screening tapes are re-
viewed favorably will be invited to campus to audition
before a faculty jury and to interview with faculty. Can-
didates must prepare 60 minutes of music (45 minutes
for piano performance and pedagogy candidates, 4560
minutes for collaborative arts candidates) for the on-
campus audition, which typically lasts 30 minutes; the
pieces performed will be selected by the faculty jury
from the performance-ready works and repertoire list
submitted with the application. Non-keyboard appli-
cants may bring their own accompanist or may pay for
the services of a local accompanist (names will be pro-
vided upon request). For doctoral candidates, the on-
campus audition visit includes writing an essay exam on
a topic to be provided that day; the exam tests ability
to write and research at the doctoral level and relates
to the history, scholarship, repertoire, and composers
associated with the candidates performance area.
Consult the Audition Information Guide for specific
audition dates for the year of intended matriculation.
Applicants for the doctor of music in piano performance
and collaborative arts program must submit a preliminary
screening tape containing 45 minutes of music repre-
senting four stylistic periods, as follows: 15 minutes of
memorized solo piano literature, including an allegro
movement from a classical-period sonata; and 30 min-
utes of collaborative instrumental and/or vocal repertoire
chosen from the categories listed below. Collaborative
arts auditions will include performance of works
selected by faculty members from the applicants 45- to
60-minute program representing four stylistic periods.
That program should include 15 minutes of memorized
solo repertoire and 30 to 45 minutes of collaborative
repertoire instrumental works (one piece each from
the classical period, romantic period, and 20th century)
to be performed with one or more partners, and/or
vocal repertoire (three songs by Schubert, Schumann,
Brahms, or Wolf; two songs by a French composer; two
songs by an American composer; and three operatic
arias, including Italian and German repertoire). Applicants
submitting a combination of vocal and instrumental
repertoire may combine them in any way that conforms
to the specified time limits. Applicants may bring their
own instrumentalists and singers for the audition; if the
assistance of a Chicago-area musician is needed, the
applicant must contact the coordinator of collaborative
arts at least one month prior to the on-campus audi-
tion. Northwestern will provide one singer and/or one
instrumentalist, and the repertoire will be chosen from
a list provided by the coordinator of collaborative arts.
Rehearsal time will be arranged. The collaborative arts
audition will also include a sight-reading audition, an
interview with the coordinator of collaborative arts,
and a test for foreign language proficiency.

Transcripts
Applicants must provide a full and accurate listing of
their postsecondary education by submitting an
official transcript from each institution attended. Each
transcript must show all courses taken, all grades
received, and any degree earned. Applicants must
also provide equivalent documentation for any study
outside the United States. The School of Music is not
responsible for obtaining transcripts, including any
record of work completed in another school or division
of Northwestern University.
An official transcript bears the original signature of the
registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institu-
tion. Unofficial transcripts or those marked issued to
student are not acceptable. Most colleges and universi-
ties have a policy whereby official transcripts may be
issued to students in a sealed and signed envelope;
applicants for whom such a service is available should
enclose the sealed and signed transcript envelope in the
application submission envelope.
Decision
Admission to graduate study in music is based solely
on evidence of adequate preparation and ability to
pursue studies of benefit to the student and the
institution. Results of all completed applications for
fall-quarter matriculation will be released during the first
week of April. Students applying for winter- or summer-
quarter entry to MMus programs will be notified as
soon as a decision has been reached. In exceptional
circumstances, the School of Music reserves the right,
at its sole discretion, to waive any documentation
normally required for admission. It also reserves the right
to grant or deny admission to an applicant whenever
it believes it has sufficient evidence for the decision.
Deposits
To accept an offer of admission from Northwestern,
students must submit a $200 nonrefundable tuition
deposit by the stated deadline. Deposits will be
credited toward the first quarter of study.
Official Correspondence
All supporting materials and inquiries about applications
should be addressed to Northwestern University School
of Music, Office of Music Admission and Financial Aid,
711 Elgin Road, Evanston, Illinois 60208-1200. Once an
application has been submitted, any revisions to the
information provided, such as a change of address or
intended quarter of entrance, must be requested in
writing.
Special Instructions for Foreign Applicants
Application Fee
Foreign applicants must submit the $50 application
fee using an international postal money order or a
bank draft on a U.S. bank. The fee must accompany
the application form.
Transcripts
Foreign applicants must supply official academic
records from all colleges and universities attended, in-
cluding certificates, mark sheets, examination results,
and other relevant data. Official records are defined as
copies of original documents certified by an official of
the issuing school or by the Institution of International
Education. A foreign applicant currently registered
at a college or university in the United States may ask
the registrar of that institution to certify copies of any
official records from outside the United States. If the
original documents are not in English, translations
must accompany the application materials.
Auditions
Foreign applicants for masters degree in performance
programs who live outside the United States may
submit a good-quality tape recording in lieu of a live
audition. An audiotape is preferred, but auditions may
be recorded on VHS videotape. Applicants for certificate
in performance or doctor of music in performance
programs who are invited to audition must audition
on campus to gain entrance to these programs.
Test of English as a Foreign Language
All applicants whose native language is not English,
including those who have studied or are currently study-
ing in the United States, must submit the results of the
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Students
may receive information about the exam by writing to
the Educational Testing Service at TOEFL/TSE Services,
Test of English as a Foreign Language, P.O. Box 6151,
Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6151, U.S.A., telephone
609/771-7100, Web www.toefl.org. When requesting
that test scores be sent to the School of Music,
applicants must use Northwestern University School of
Musics ETS institutional code, 3732, and departmental
code, 19. A TOEFL score not lower than 560 on the
written test or 220 on the computer-based test is
required for admission consideration. Foreign applicants
for doctor of music programs must score not lower
than 600 (written) or 250 (computer-based) to receive
financial aid consideration. To assure timely admission
consideration, applicants must register for the exam by
the December registration deadline and take the exam
by the January test date. Taking the test after this date
will delay the admission decision. Only official score
reports sent directly from ETS will be considered;
test scores that are more than two years old will be
considered invalid.
Section-by-Section Instructions

in the program are encouraged to research it more fully
before indicating a preference. Civic Orchestra applica-
tions are due in February, and auditions are typically held
in February and March. Applicants can request audi-
tion information and, beginning in December, sched-
ule Civic Orchestra auditions by calling or writing

Recommendations are required from two teachers
or music professionals who are able to evaluate the ap-
plicants capacity to work productively within a highly
motivated peer group. Applicants should provide the
recommendation form (or a copy of the form) from
this booklet to their recommenders; recommendation
letters should be written on or attached to the
form. If the applicant intends to specialize in music per-
formance studies, one of the recommenders should
evaluate technical proficiency and musicality. Music
education applicants should include recommenda-
tions from those who have directly supervised their
teaching.
Two envelopes have been provided for these letters.
Recommendations should be returned in a sealed
envelope to the applicant, and that envelope should
be enclosed unopened in the application submission
envelope.
Auditions Applicants must meet the performance
audition requirements (if any) for their intended
program of study as outlined earlier under Program
Admission Requirements and Performance.
Additional Data and Personal Statement
These sections provide an opportunity for applicants to
add their own voice and personality to the application. A
one-page statement is required, explaining the applicants
current goals, career aspirations, and reasons for applying
to Northwesterns School of Music.
Statement of Integrity
Applicants must read and sign this section. Applications
submitted without a signature will be returned.

Applying for Financial Aid
Types of Aid Available
Three basic forms of assistance are available to graduate
music students. Grant (scholarship) assistance is available
to qualified students based on the strength of their ap-
plication. Most grants cover part of tuition; $2.3 million
was awarded to the 180 graduate students enrolled in
200001. Work assistance, in the form of graduate/
teaching assistantships and Federal College Work-Study,
is available to students who submit the proper docu-
ments and are declared eligible. Most work positions
offer a salary of $3,000 to $4,000 for the nine-month
academic year. Loan assistance, in the form of both
federal and institutional loans, is available to students
who demonstrate eligibility. Applicants for graduate
study in the School of Music are considered indepen-
dent by federal standards; parental income and assets
are not considered when calculating applicants eligibility
for financial aid.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek financial
assistance from agencies outside the University to help
defray the cost of their graduate education. Many
books and Internet sites offer information on graduate
scholarships.
When to Apply
Do not wait until you have been admitted to North-
western to apply for financial aid. Failure to meet the
financial aid deadline will delay notification of your aid
award and may preclude any offer of aid, as funds may
be entirely committed. If you file late and are offered
aid, you will not necessarily be entitled to an extension
of the reply deadline.
Financial Aid Document Deadline
FAFSA/Renewal FAFSA February 15(Free Application for Federal Student Aid, sent to processor with institution code E00298)
UAPP March 1(University Aid Application)
WAPP March 1(Work Assistance Application)
How to Apply
You must check yes in the Financial Aid section of the
Application for Admission to request a financial aid
decision. Complete the University Aid Application and
Work Assistance Application enclosed with this booklet,
as well as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA), which is available online from www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Students who have received federal aid during the
prior academic year and have received a Renewal FAFSA
form may complete it in lieu of the FAFSA form. In com-
pleting the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA, complete Section H
as follows so that the results will be mailed directly to the
University: E00298 (Title IV code), Northwestern University
School of Music, 711 Elgin Road, Evanston, Illinois 60208-1200.
Do not wait until after filing your tax return to
complete the FAFSA; you may use estimated income
figures. Financial aid awards will be adjusted later if the
actual income differs significantly from the estimated
income.
Foreign Applicants
Foreign nationals must be permanent residents of the
United States to be eligible for federal loan assistance.
Financial aid applicants who are not U.S. citizens are
asked to submit proof of permanent resident status.
To obtain a visa and matriculate, foreign nationals will
be asked to supply documentation showing financial
backing equal to the projected cost of attendance.
Foreign applicants are strongly encouraged to seek
financial assistance from agencies outside the University
to help defray the cost of their graduate education.
Cost of a Northwestern Education
Financial aid awards are based on the average student
budget for the year of intended matriculation. This
budget includes tuition (for which students are billed)
plus various personal expenses. Actual costs are subject
to change, and increases should be expected in future
years. The average student budget for the 200102
academic year included
Tuition $ 24,840
Room and board $ 9,459
Books and supplies $ 1,176
Transportation $ 1,413
Personal $ 1,851
Health insurance $ 1,184
Total $39,923
