SmellFive Senses

The olfactory system, the apparatus responsible for our sense of smell, has a pathway in the brain closely associated with the limbic system. The limbic system contains the amygdala and the hippo campus parts of the brain which are closely associated with emotion and memory respectively.

Nearly everyone has experienced a moment when a faint fragrance brings a memory of a long-lost moment in time crashing back to the forefront of their minds. Often we will have forgotten about the vent completely, yet it transpires our unfathomable minds have filed it neatly in some unreachable corner of the brain, primed for instant retrieval.

It may be the perfume worn by a long-forgotten friend, the stench of petrol from a youth spent worshipping motorcycles or the haze of chlorine from summer months lazing by the pool. It is amazing that a few simple airborne molecules can trigger such vivid recollections.

DMS is a little known but important gas. Across the world’s oceans, seas and coasts, tens of millions of tonnes of it are released by microbes that live near plankton and marine plants, including seaweeds and some salt-marsh plants.

The gas plays an important role in the formation of cloud cover over the oceans, with major effects on climate. DMS is also a remarkably effective food marker for ocean-going birds such as it acts as a homing scent

TouchFive Senses

The somatosensory system is a diverse sensory system composed of the receptors and processing centres to produce the sensory modalities such as touch, temperature, body position and pain.

The sensory receptors cover the skin and epithelia, skeletal muscles, bones and joints, internal organs, and the cardiovascular system.

While touch is considered one of the five traditional senses, the impression of touch is formed from several modalities.

The Tamagotchi is a handheld digital pet which was created in Japan by Bandai in the mid to late 90s. The name is derived from the Japanese word, tamago, which means “egg”, and the English word, “watch” (uocchi). As of 2009, there have been over 44 Tamagotchi versions released since their creation in 1996.

Like real life pets, it needs plenty of attention. You are expected to feed it, allow it to go to the bathroom, entertain it, making sure it slept, and monitor its general happiness and well-being; if done efficiently, your pet will become loveable, content and well-behaved.

SightFive Senses

The visual system in humans allows individuals to assimilate information from the environment. The act of seeing starts when the lens of the eye focuses an image of its surroundings onto a light sensitive membrane in the back of the eye, called the retina.

The retina is actually part of the brain that is isolated to serve as a transducer for the conversion of patterns of light into neuronal signals. The lens of the eye focuses light on the photo receptive cells of the retina, which detect the photons of light and respond by producing neural impulses. These signals are processed in a hierarchical fashion by different parts of the brain, from the retina upstream to central ganglia in the brain.

Pokémon is a media franchise published and owned by the video game company Nintendo and created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. Originally released as a pair of interlinkable Game Boy role-playing video games developed by Game Freak, Pokémon has since become the second most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo’s own Mario series. The Pokémon Trading Card Game is a collectible card game with a goal similar to a Pokémon battle in the video game series. Players use Pokémon cards, with individual strengths and weaknesses, in an attempt to defeat their opponent by “knocking out” his or her Pokémon cards.

TasteFive Senses

Taste refers to the ability to detect the flavor of substances such as food and certain minerals. Humans receive tastes through sensory organs (taste buds) concentrated on the upper surface of the tongue.

The sensation of taste can be categorized into five basic tastes: sweet, bitterness, sour, salty, and umami.

As taste senses are both harmful As taste senses are both harmful and beneficial things, all basic tastes are classified as either appetitive or aversive, depending upon the effect the things they sense have on our bodies

HearingFive Senses

Hearing is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through the ear. In humans and other vertebrates, hearing is performed primarily by the auditory system.

Vibrations are detected by the ear and transduced into nerve impulses that are perceived by the brain (primarily in the temporal lobe). Like touch, audition requires sensitivity to the movement of molecules in the world outside the organism.

The eardrum of an ear simplifies incoming air pressure waves to a single channel of amplitude. In the inner ear, the distribution of vibrations along the length of the basilar membrane is detected by hair cells.

The Compact Cassette, often referred to as audio cassette, cassette tape, cassette, or simply tape, is a magnetic tape sound recording format. It was designed originally for dictation, but improvements led the Compact Cassette to supplant the Stereo 8-track cartridge and reel-to-reel tape recording in most non professional applications.

Between the early 1970s and the late 1990s, the cassette was one of the two most common formats for pre recorded music, first alongside the LP record and later the Compact Disc.

Although most commonly associated with the 80s, cassette tapes were a major media format in the early 90s.
