Dear Stanner Families,
Welcome to the new academic year. I would like to extend warm regards to all of our returning IDPLOLHVZLWKVSHFLDOJUHHWLQJVWRWKRVHIDPLOLHVZKRDUHMRLQLQJWKH0ROOR\FRPPXQLW\IRUWKHÀUVWtime. We at Archbishop Molloy High School are working diligently to make the year a success for you and your son or daughter. As a staff, we are committed to providing the very best environment for the spiritual, academic, social and emotional growth of all students in order to foster success, self worth, respect for others and life-long learning… “Not for school but for life.”
The beginning of the new academic year generates a great deal of energy and excitement. We share a renewed sense of dedication and resolution as we begin the new semester. The beginning of the new year challenges all of us to focus on our goals. What exactly do we want our students to learn? The simplest answer comes from the Gospel when a lawyer asks Jesus, “Teacher, what must I do to have eternal life?” Jesus answers, “What is written in the Scriptures? How do you understand them?” The man replies, “The Scriptures say, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind.’ They also say, “Love your neighbors as much as you love your-self.” “Jesus responds, “You have given the right answer. If you do this you will have eternal life.” (Luke 10:25-28) If we can teach our students to love God, themselves, and others over the next year, we will accomplish a great deal.
One of the functions of education is to help students discover and then maximize all their poten-tial. Education should also empower them to develop learning processes so they can better under-stand and operate in the world around them. Talents and education have no moral value in and of WKHPVHOYHVLWLVZKDWZHGRZLWKWKHPWKDWJLYHVWKHPYDOXH:KDWZHGRZLWKWKHPGHÀQHVXV The Molloy mission statement says that “here individuals recognize their self worth and develop a lifetime of Christian values, critical thinking and service to others.” While Archbishop Molloy High School promotes academic excellence, it is equally important for us to stay focused on our other goals of faith development, social consciousness and service to others.
As we look forward to a new school year, our common challenge is to help our students grow not only intellectually and physically, but also spiritually and morally. Only when they can experience God’s love in their lives can they then learn to honestly love themselves and others.
Once again, welcome to our new academic year. Let us remember to pray for one another.
Sincerely,
Brother Thomas Schady F.M.S.Principal

Not for school but for life September/October 2013
On Sunday, October 20th an informative program for middle school boys and girls and their families will be held from 11 AM to 4 PM. A short video, tour of the campus, and exhibits on every aspect of school life will be presented. Please let your neighbors know about this opportunity.
All student absences should be phoned into the VFKRRORIÀFHQRODWHUWKDQ$0HDFKGD\\RXUson or daughter is absent. When calling school about your child’s absence please give: Name,
ID # and reason for absence. Upon returning to school each student is required by NYS and Molloy to present a signed parent/guardian note explaining the reason for the absence. Any questions regarding health related absence should be directed to Ms. Kathleen Forgione at ext. 123.
The next Single Parents’ Support Group meeting will be on October 6th at 7:30pm in the school library. These informal meetings consist of sharing conversations, stories, hopes and fears over coffee. All are welcome!
On Wed., Oct. 16th all sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT test to help them assess their readiness for college admissions. The PSAT is a VWDQGDUGL]HGWHVWWKDWSURYLGHVÀUVWKDQGSUDFWLFHfor the SAT. It also gives students a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. Because of this special testing program, freshmen and seniors will not have school that day.
Parents who drive their sons or daughters to school in the morning are reminded that they should drop off passengers at the curbside on Main
Street or Manton Street. Please DO NOT drive into the parking lot to leave them off at the back doors. Also, do not block the driveways or bus stop while stopping at the curbside. These rules are in place to
prevent accidents. We are sure that you agree that the safety of all students is of the utmost concern, and we appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Here at Molloy, we have only one fundraising activity each year for our students, our annual Walk-A-Thon. The Walk-A-Thon will take place on Friday, October 25th. Parents will receive information under a separate heading with details, and all students will receive more information and a pledge card in school. Thanks to the enthusiasm and support of our students for the Walk-A-Thon, we have been able to provide improvements in the school that directly affect every student. Your support means that we can continue to provide important improvements while keeping our tuition and fees among the lowest in the diocese.

This national standard fee is charged by the College Board for each AP exam a student takes. Any student enrolled in an AP class is required to sit for the AP exam. Registration dates for these exams are March 6th & 7th of 2014.
Our school calendar has our graduation date for 2014 as Saturday, June 7th. Take careful note that this is a tentative date. We do not host the graduation ceremony on our campus. We must take part in a lottery for the date and time UHTXHVWHG7KLVLQIRUPDWLRQVKRXOGDOOEHÀQDOL]HGby the end of January 2014. A $100.00 fee per senior is being instituted this year to help offset the expenses of the Commencement Exercises, Commencement Liturgy, Senior Awards Ceremony and Senior Breakfast.
Admission to Molloy is based primarily on marks earned in elementary school and the TACHS (Test for Admission to Catholic High School.) Additional consideration is extended to family members of students and alumni. More than 12 million Americans have food allergies. That’s one in 25, or 4 percent of the population. About 3 million children in the U.S. have food allergies. Food allergy is believed to be the leading cause of anaphylaxis outside the hospital setting, causing an estimated 50,000 emergency department visits each year in the U.S. It is estimated that anaphylaxis caused by food results in 150 deaths each year. Death can be sudden, sometimes occurring within minutes.
There is no cure for food allergies. Strict avoidance of food allergens and early recognition and management of allergic reactions to food are important measures to prevent serious health consequences. Even trace amounts of a food allergen can cause a reaction. Early administration of epinephrine (adrenaline) is crucial to successfully treating anaphylactic reactions. Epinephrine is available by prescription in a self-injectable device (EpiPen or Twinject). Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that happens to some people who have allergies to food, insect stings, drugs, or latex. Anaphylaxis happens very quickly and affects your entire body. Signs usually start within 5 to 30 minutes of coming into contact with the thing to which you are allergic. But it may take more than an hour for you to notice anaphylactic symptoms. Warning signs may include: a red rash with welts that is usually itchy; swollen throat or swollen areas of the body; wheezing; passing out; chest tightness; trouble breathing; a hoarse voice; trouble swallowing; vomiting; diarrhea; stomach cramping; a pale or red color to the face or body.
Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical treatment. If you think you are having this type of reaction use your auto injectable epinephrine and call 911 immediately.

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the many school activities that are designed to foster the spiritual growth of the individual. Retreats and Encounters are excellent opportunities for students to pursue a deeper spiritual life.
The schedule of retreats and encounters for this school year is as follows:
The induction ceremonies for seniors admitted to the National Honor Society will take place Tuesday, October 15th - 7 PM. Membership in this society is an important indication to colleges of a student’s scholarship, leadership, character, and service to others. Because service and leadership are part of the criteria set by the NHS charter, parents of underclassmen should encourage their sons and daughters to participate in school activities and to get involved in the many service programs that Molloy offers.

September 2013 Dear Parents and Guardians, New York Education Law Section 409-H, effective July 1, 2001, requires all public and non public elementary and secondary schools to provide written notification to all persons in parental relation, faculty, and staff regarding the potential use of pesticides periodically throughout the school year. Archbishop Molloy High School is required to maintain a list of persons in parental relation, faculty, and staff who wish to receive 48-hour prior written notification of certain pesticide applications. The following pesticide applications are not subject to prior notification requirements: • school remains unoccupied for a continuous 72-hours following an application; • anti-microbial products; • nonvolatile rodenticides in tamper resistant bait stations in areas inaccessible to children; • nonvolatile insecticidal baits in tamper resistant bait stations in areas inaccessible to children; • silica gels and other nonvolatile ready-to-use pastes, foams, or gels in areas inaccessible to children; • boric acid and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate; • the application of EPA designated biopestacides; • the application of EPA designated exempt materials under 40CFR152.25; • the use of aerosol products with a directed spray in containers of 18 fluid ounces or less when used to
protect individuals from an imminent threat from stinging and biting insects including venomous spiders, bees, wasps, and hornets.
In the event of an emergency application necessary to protect against an imminent threat to human health, a good faith effort will be made to supply written notification to those on the 48-hour prior notification list. If you would like to receive 48-hour prior notification of pesticide applications that occur at school, please complete the form below and return it to Mrs. Rooney at school. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Rooney at [email protected] for further information. Every attempt will be made by the school to use applications that are listed above. Respectfully,
Bro. Thomas Schady Principal
