  • “Tradition is not holding onto the ashes but passing on the

flame,” wrote Saint Thomas More, the English humanist a long

time ago. It was in the spirit of these thoughts that the organi

sers of the Eszterháza Festivities revitalised and passed on the

flame in the summer of 2013, when they invited outstanding

representatives of classical music, jazz and opera to Eszterháza

so that they would once again fill with music the beautiful halls

in the Baroque palace, glimmering in its original splendour.

The intention was not just the creation but also the preservation

of tradition as the music did not occupy but return to the venues

surrounded by the Rococo walls. To the same place and in the

same way as it was originally envisioned by Nikolaus Esterházy

the “Magnificient”, who was born 300 years ago this year.

Not only the creator of the fairy world of Eszterháza but also

his onetime court musician, Joseph Haydn would proudly and

gladly listen to the concerts of Eszterháza Festivities in this

    wonderful environment.

18 weeks, 60 concerts and almost a hundred and fifty perfor

mers: there will be no shortage of high quality music prog rams

this year, either. The connoisseur audience will be able to enjoy

subtleties of period chamber music, classics of the opera litera

ture and the improvisational playfulness of jazz. And they can

do so surrounded by the most beautiful and most authentic

scenery of Hungary but possibly Eastern Central Europe: in

Eszterháza from 30 May to 28 September 2014.
