Note from the Executive and Artistic Director

Almost every musician I know has at least one compelling story about a music teacher who has had a profound effect on his or her personal development. Study after study demonstrates that a strong musical training has an overwhelmingly positive effect on children’s ability to form lasting friendships, to work well as part of a team, to develop personal discipline and confidence, and last but not least, to value the creation of beauty as a core human value. It also has the side effect of making children better at the type of things that people can express in numbers, like performance on standardized tests and achievement in non-musical subjects like math and science. It is no surprise to me, but studying music is apparently verifiably good for both our hearts and our brains.

The richness and variety of talent in EMV’s 49th season would not have been possible without the sustained efforts of hundreds of musical educators from all over the world over many, many years. The 2018-19 EMV Season Calendar is a visual tribute to these music teachers, the unsung heroes who have spent countless and often painstaking hours correcting and managing things as diverse as wayward tuning, imprecise rhythm, ridiculously awkward stage deportment, and even the odd psychological disorder, all for the greater cause of music. As audience members who are often unaware of the sustained and painstaking work involved with bringing a great performance to the stage, we have a lot for which to be thankful. Great music lessons and teachers lead to great performances.

I am proud to say that, since the beginning, EMV has made music education a key aspect of our operations. Our summer programmes in historical performance practice were for many years considered to be some of the best in the world and they have created a lasting legacy worldwide. In our 49th season, EMV continues this legacy through our highly successful Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme and our recently expanded Early Music Scholarship Programme.

After another record-breaking year in 2017-18, EMV is excited to announce that this season, in addition to presenting the Vancouver Bach Festival and our Vancouver-based Main Series concerts, we will be expanding our operations to Victoria with the inauguration of the Pacific Baroque Series – a new collaboration with Christ Church Cathedral Victoria and the Pacific Baroque Festival. This is a first for the organization, and we are excited to connect with new audiences and new supporters. There is so much to look forward to and so much left to learn – see you at an EMV event soon!

Venice in the East: Music from Renaissance Crete Cappella RomanaFriday May 10 at 7:30 pm | Christ Church Cathedral

Cappella Romana Alexander Lingas director

Byzantine musicologist and performer Alexander Lingas directs his 13-voice ensemble Cappella Romana, renowned for their presentations of music that span the full breadth of the Roman tradition, from the Greek East to the Latin West. Here Lingas conducts Venice in the East, a programme of medieval Byzantine chant and related Latin works influenced by Byzantine tradition from Crete and the Ionian Islands, which were ruled by the Venetians after the Latin conquest of Constantinople in 1204, and from Cyprus, a Venetian outpost from 1489 to 1571. This programme was commissioned by the Utrecht Early Music Festival (The Netherlands), the largest early music festival in the world, where Cappella Romana presented the debut performance in 2016.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY 2018-19

emv’s educational mandate: “To sponsor musical performances and educational opportunities informed by an in-depth knowledge

of original performing conditions, period-specific instruments, and broad historical context.”

Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme (BOMP)Developing the next generation of period performers, students rehearse weekly over each academic term at UBC with a core group of five professional mentors led by the PBO’s Music Director Alexander Weimann. A select group of students are recruited to participate in the programme, and instruments have been made available for loan to all participants through the UBC School of Music and EMV’s Instrument Collections.

This programme is generously supported by Vic and Joan Baker.

EMV Scholarship Programme for BC ResidentsIn the Fall of 2017, EMV began a new scholarship programme awarding up to 10 annual scholarships to BC residents. Qualified candidates are professional-track music students or active professional musicians seeking to develop skills in early music performance. This initiative, like EMV’s Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme is aimed at increasing the long-term sustainability of the regional period instrument scene in BC by providing instruction on early music performance through private lessons with primarily regionally based professional artists.

This programme is supported by Bryan and Gail Atkins.

Green College PerformancesOver the last ten years EMV has offered an annual series of free lecture-demonstrations at Green College at UBC, related to our season programming and designed to inform and grow our audience base.

St. Anselm’s performancesIn 2017-18, with the help of the Drance Family, EMV began a partnership with St. Anselm’s Church on the UBC campus to present an annual series of events related to programmes from EMV’s Main Series that serve to enrich the community’s awareness of early music in the broader community.

EMV Instrument CollectionOver the years, EMV has assembled a valuable collection of unique historical instruments. This collection is available to the community and benefits many musicians and established cultural institutions that produce concerts and educational programmes of repertoire requiring specialized instruments.

Other Education & Outreach ActivitiesIn addition to our formal education & outreach programmes, EMV also hosts open dress rehearsals, pre-concert discussions before all concerts, documentary screenings, and public talks relating to our repertoire. These presentations are all free and open to the public.

For a full schedule of events go to Education and Community at earlymusic.bc.ca
