Nota Bene TAKE NOTE of THIS A PUBLICATION FOR THE MEDICAL STAFF OF JEFFERSON HEALTH – NEW JERSEY Important Medical Staff Updates Timothy Dombrowski, DO, MPH Vice President & Chief Medical Officer SUMMER 2018 Physicians, This issue of NotaBene contains important information about how the merger – signed less than one year ago with Jefferson Health – is creating important improvements at Jefferson Health – New Jersey. These advancements enhance our commitment to the South Jersey community, enabling us to offer patients state-of-the-art medical care close to where they live and work. The merger is also resulting in technological advances (specifically to our Electronic Health Records [EHR] system), bringing constructions plans for new facilities to life, and expanding our network of care providers, for both inpatient and outpatient settings. Preparation work for the kick-off of the Epic Electronic Health Records (EHR) system took place May 30th at a special in-person training session, where key features and a project timetable were presented to more than 260 participants – many of whom were Jefferson New Jersey leadership members and physicians. See page 4 for an article by Dr. James McCabe, our Associate Chief Medical Information Officer, describing Epic in more depth, its present use at Jefferson (Center City), and how the transition to Epic will occur at Jefferson Health – New Jersey. Epic’s major improvements over other EHRs will help alleviate the serious time dilemma that documentation creates for us all. Construction is moving along at both our Cherry Hill and Washington Township hospital campuses. At Cherry Hill, the demolition of the outpatient medical office building and the old administration section of the hospital is complete. Construction of a new 7-floor patient tower with 90 private patient rooms began this spring. It is anticipated that the first two floors will open by winter 2019, with the rest of the tower slated for completion by winter 2020. At Washington Township, construction of a new parking garage began this March, with an April 2019 anticipated completion date. Plans for a new patient tower with 60 private patient rooms have been announced. Construction is slated to begin spring 2019, with completion by spring 2021. Lastly, see page 8 for information about the benefits that KHA’s recent name change (to Jefferson Health) will bring to our patients and associates alike. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Jefferson Health – New Jersey!

Physicians,

This issue of NotaBene contains important information about how the merger – signed less than one year ago with Jefferson Health – is creating important improvements at Jefferson Health – New Jersey.

Dr. Jim Baird (Emergency Medicine) recently received the 2018 New Jersey Narcotics Enforcement Officers’ Association (NJNEOA) Community Leader Award for exhibiting a high degree of professionalism, integrity and dedication at

a special luncheon in Atlantic City. In May, Dr. Baird was also one of more than a dozen area addiction experts/treatment advocates at a roundtable discussion hosted by SJ Magazine. The July issue of the magazine features the conversation, which addresses everything from causes of the opioid epidemic, to treatment options, and social stigmas facing those with addiction. Dr. Baird also presented on the topic of “Innovations in Alternatives to Opioids” at June’s NJ Department of Health 2018 Population Health Summit in Bridgewater, NJ. The event featured an array of expert speakers and was aimed at addressing ways to transform NJ’s infrastructure to improve and save lives, support families, and strengthen communities impacted by the opioid epidemic.

Dr. Lisa Derr (Wound Care) was recently named Medical Director of the newly opened Jefferson Health Center for Advanced Wound Care & Hyperbaric Oxygen in Cherry Hill. In her role, Dr. Derr provides clinical leadership and care, along with a team of wound care specialists at the center, which offers leading-edge treatments for non-healing wounds, including: hyperbaric oxygen therapy, negative pressure therapies, bioengineered tissues, and biosynthetics. For the past year, a group of Jefferson Health – New Jersey physicians have taken part in what is being called “Bow-Tie Friday” at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital. The idea was spearheaded by hospitalist Bradley Bender, MD, who brought the idea with him from Hahnemann University Hospital, where he completed his Residency in Internal Medicine.

As KHA Infectious Diseases Medical Director Todd Levin, DO, explains, “Some studies have shown that neck ties can carry and transfer bacteria, elevating the risk for health care-acquired infections.” With this information, a group of doctors and Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) started wearing bow ties on Fridays at the Jefferson Washington Township Hospital.

“‘Bow-Tie Fridays’ began about a year ago and has been picking up momentum,” Dr. Levin said. “We hope it spreads to the other Jefferson NJ hospitals to aid in our system-wide commitment to raising awareness and finding ways to decrease health care-acquired infections.”

In October 2019, we will transition from our existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) system to Epic. This single-platform system with advanced functionality will provide seamless medical records, so whether a patient is in the office, emergency department, operating room, or procedural area, all patient data will be accessible throughout the entire Jefferson enterprise. Epic has been rated as the #1 EHR several times by health care research/insights firm KLAS.

The physician documentation module within Epic can be enhanced with personalized macros and voice recognition to speed up charting. With the Epic Care Everywhere module, you can view patient visits from any health system that uses Epic. Epic also has the best-rated patient portal in the business, allowing patients to be meaningfully engaged in their health care.

Epic went live more than a year ago at the Jefferson Center City campus, providing Jefferson leaders with the opportunity to optimize the system. As part of the Jefferson Health enterprise, we are implementing their version of Epic. Any customizations of order sets and other components of the build will be reserved for regulatory differences between campuses, and other necessary reasons.

Over the next two months, operational workgroups will meet to align our workflows and processes. There will be a monthly newsletter and other communications to update where we are in the process. Training will begin July 2019. We look forward to this exciting project, which will improve patient care and enhance physician workflow. Thank you in advance for your support of this effort.

JeffConnect™, the innovative telehealth service that “connects” physicians and patients through a cellphone, tablet or computer with a webcam, becomes available in New Jersey this summer! Now, you can see your patients by video.

Patients will be able to use their smartphone, tablet, or computer with a webcam for a Scheduled Video Visit, something that is planned in advance, much like an in-person visit. Phase 1 of JeffConnect™ Scheduled Video Visits in New Jersey will begin in July, with other phases rolling out in coming months.

Primary Care Physician Matthew Gettings, DO, shares his professional experience with JeffConnect™:

“I recently had the opportunity to care for a young woman using the JeffConnect™ platform. She

was concerned about changes in her skin, which started a couple days before she contacted us. She was worried these changes might delay a planned surgery later in the week. Although she could not make an office visit due to transportation issues, she was able to participate in a video visit. During our video visit, I was able to examine her area of concern, and could even compare it to a photo she took the day before, which she uploaded through the app. It was very satisfying to meet her needs without physical distance being the barrier it used to be.”

Join the more than 350 Jefferson doctors experiencing the benefits of JeffConnect™ Scheduled Video Visits!

For more information about JeffConnect™ in New Jersey, contact Shawn Thurber, Director of Population Health at Jefferson Health – New Jersey, at [email protected].

Dr. Stuart Weiner: Traveling the World to Help Others

For the past decade, Perinatologist Stuart Weiner, MD, MLA, has worked with Global Volunteers, a Minnesota-based organization, with volunteer projects in more than 20 countries worldwide.

“These projects mostly focus on teaching English to children, and teaching those in under-resourced countries how to obtain better nutrition - such as growing their own vegetables and improving hygiene,” said Dr. Weiner, who has practiced at Jefferson for the past 21 years and is currently a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, with a sub-specialty in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

The latest step for Global Volunteers focuses on maternity and prenatal care in an effort to reduce maternal and newborn mortality, as well as childhood stunting, which affects nearly 50 percent of children in in the east African nation of Tanzania, where Dr. Weiner volunteered in March.

Global Volunteers has planned for a maternity-focused health clinic in Ipalamwa, a village in the mountains of Tanzania. A three-year planning and development effort will culminate in an expected summer 2018 clinic opening.

“I was there to help interview and hire medical staff, and make last-minute adjustments to the construction,” Dr. Weiner said. “I plan to return frequently to educate and advise.”

Dr. Weiner and Global Volunteers CEO Bud Philbrook, JD, recently met with Jefferson Health leaders to discuss a potential collaboration in the future; they hope to mentor “interested medical students and physicians at all levels to join this venture.”

Dr. Weiner has also participated in about 10 other GlobalHealth projects in Africa, Asia and South America. The most rewarding have included a three-week, village-to-village trek in the Himalayas, “educating mid-wives and treating hundreds of patients,” as well as helping start a maternal-fetal medicine post-graduate fellowship in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

“These projects have allowed me to combine the professional reward of providing much-needed patient care with medical education throughout different cultures,” Dr. Weiner said.

Dr. Weiner is shown here in the Cook Islands, South Pacific, in 2011, where he taught English to Maori schoolchildren and practiced obstetrics at Cook Islands’ main hospital that services more than 3,000 square miles.
