  • Notes From Campus XXXI Its a short Notes this week, though not for lack of activity. We are hitting on all cylinders as we head into the final month of the school year, with classes and training going full tilt. HEADLINES LAX HAS TOUGH WEEK PHOTOS STAFF COMINGS AND GOINGS GALA RAFFLE CLASSIFIEDS DETAILS A Mixed Bag The lax teams had a rugged week, as the early-season postponements, long road trips and some really tough opponents made for a busy slate. The guys fared well on Monday, as their long ride to Stratton paid off in a 6-4 win. Hans Halvorsen 12 tallied another hat trick, while junior Sandy Vietze had a pair of his own. Drew Duffy 13 grabbed a goal as well, as the visitors jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back. Dan Bell 11 turned away 12 shots, but is unfortunately out for the rest of the regular season with a thumb injury. The shorthanded squad headed north to Hyde Park to take on the always-tough Lancers of Lamoille Union. With Jon Gonin 11

  • doing an admirable job standing in for Bell in the net, the team held things close until the waning minutes, dropping a 15-4 decision. This time the hat trick went to Mitch Grimmer 12, while Tomek Dobrzanski 11 got on the board as well. Gonin kept his poise in goal, stopping 18 shots. Saturday brought another long drive, this time for the return game with Sharon Academy. Despite the travel and the long week, the boys put together an impressive 10-5 victory. Jon Gonin earned his first career win in net, turning back 13 shots. The scoring punch was provided by four players who each netted a pair of goals: Tomek Dobrzanski, Mitch Grimmer, Sandy Vietze and Hans Halvorsen. Cooper McNealus 10 opened the scoring with the first quarters only tally, while Sam Worley 13 collected the final goal of the first half, in which the visitors took a 6-1 lead. Kudos to the defensive front of Nick Post 13, Danny Duffy 12, and Tristan Palola 13 who, with fellow long stick Gonin pressed into duty between the pipes, had to play the entire game. The girls opened the week by heading into, quite literally, a Hornets nest: an away game at Division 1 powerhouse Essex HS. The hosts were not all that accommodating, and sent GMVS packing with a 21-5 defeat. The girls were unbowed and kept fighting throughout, and despite the score, they came away with a lot of positive results. Both Katherine Scalia 10 and Haleigh Carbone 12 scored twice, with newcomer Katie Fitzpatrick 11 getting in the scoring column as well. Splitting 21 saves in net were Hannah Kadah 11 and Ainsley Carbone 10. In Saturdays home game with Montpelier, the team hoped to get back on the winning track, but a fast start by the visitors proved tough to overcome. Despite drawing even at 6-6 late in the game, GMVS ended up on the short end of an 8-6 score. Kelly Glander 13 had a breakthrough game on offense, scoring a hat trick. Also getting in on the act were Haleigh Carbone with 2 goals and

  • Emma LeBlanc with a single tally. Ainsley Carbone was on fire in goal, keeping things close with 28 saves. The teams have another big week, though with far less travel: Boys: 17-May Mon Stratton* 4:00 19-May Wed at Vergennes 4:00

Staff Update As we head into the end of the year and plan for next, I would like to take a moment to inform everyone about staff changes here at GMVS. We are very excited about the plans our departing staff members have for the future, and we are very grateful for their selfless dedication to the school and to our students. We are also very excited and feel very lucky to be bringing on the new staff members introduced below by Steve and Alice. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. -Dave From Steve and Alice

Athletic staffing news: John Norton, JP Daigneault, Beatty Schlueter, and Brandon Dyksterhouse will depart GMVS at the end of the school year to pursue new opportunities in the ski racing world. In addition, Andy Peters has completed his winter coaching assignment and intends to return to graduate studies in the fall. After two years as here at GMVS, John returns home to New York to lead NYSEF as their Alpine Program Director. Beatty will move to Lake Placid with John and will work as a staff coach at NYSEF. JP has accepted a position as the Head Mens Coach for the Qubec Ski Team. Brandon assumes the reins as Head Coach of the British Columbia Mens Alpine Team. We wish them well in their new ventures, and are particularly proud that when positions of leadership open

  • in this sport, programs solicit our staff members to fill key roles. In hiring news, we are pleased to announce the addition of Ben Brown, Paul Epstein, Jeremy Transue, Todd Carroll and Tim Henderson to our full-time staff. All are high quality, knowledgeable professionals, passionate about ski racing and supporting and teaching the sport to young racers. Ben Brown, a native of Michigan, spent the bulk of his racing career in Colorado. He is a Western State College graduate, where he captained the ski team and garnered Academic All-American status. After college Ben continued to race, while also coaching at Loveland Racing Club and more recently, with Iced Out Racing. With over thirty FIS race podiums and four years of coaching experience, Ben is a welcome asset to our program. Ben joins us as a J1/2 girls coach. He will be at school later this month to begin work, and will join us at Mount Hood for Session 1. Paul, GMVS 00, comes to us with a wealth of international racing and coaching experience. After a successful racing career at University of Vermont, where Paul achieved All-American status, he continued racing with the prominent Ski Racing International training group. For the past two seasons, Paul has assumed the position of Head Coach of SRI and has coached several athletes privatelyall in the heart of Alpine Europe. Paul, who will coach J1/2 boys, starts work on 10 May. Jeremy Transue, GMVS 01, came on board as a staff coach part way through last winter while on injured-reserve from World Cup competition. He has decided to retire from international competition, ending a seven-year stint with the USST. Worm joined us full time as a J3 coach, continuing in a role he filled from early February this past winter. Todd Carroll also came on board last December on a part-time

  • basis, tasked with doing boot modification, ski repair, stone grinding and the likea role that we have expanded into a fulltime position. A Vermont native and VARA junior competitor from Smugglers Notch, Todd spent his college years at UVM acting as a volunteer ski and boot technician for the UVM Alpine Ski Team. While at UVM he gained professional experience in marketing and operations by working at Race Stock Sports in Waterbury. Most recently, Todd worked for Rossignol as their Eastern Racing Director. Todd will continue to work part time through this spring and start full time next fall. He will travel to on-snow camps throughout the fall to work with our athletes on their set up and fit. Tim Henderson comes to GMVS as a 2010 graduate of Middlebury College. Tim grew up ski racing at Waterville Valley, a program renowned for their emphasis on mastery of technical fundamentals and ski-specific fitness. Tim went on from Waterville to race for the Middlebury College Ski Team and was a consistent carnival team contributor until his senior year when he retired from competition to start coaching the Panther squad. Head Alpine Coach Stever Bartlett describes Tim as highly influential in team organization, and as someone with not only a great understanding of ski racing technique and tactics and but someone who could relate that information easily to athletes. Tim will work as a J1/2 boys coach and will join us at the start of the 10-11 school year.

Academic Staffing News: Randy Bretzin, having completed his Master of Arts in Diplomacy, will depart GMVS at the end of the academic year. This degree complements his masters degree in National Security Affairs & Middle East / North Africa studies and is a logical step following his career in the military. While Randy will not be returning to the military, he will be working in a related field as a National Security Analyst with Computer Sciences Corporation located near

  • Cambridge, England. In describing the job, Randy said: in some ways it is like the job of the military contractor in the movie Avatar who must learn about the culture of the blue aliens to support some nefarious, exploitive plans by the Army. The good news is that Randy will focus on promoting cultural understanding for healthy purposes. Best of all, unlike the Army, he, in his words, wont have to pass a physical training test every six months or salute colonels. We will miss Randys positive energy and wish him the best of luck! To replace Randy, we are pleased to announce the addition of Cathy Plas, who will teach French 1, French 3, and French 5. Cathy majored in French at Arizona University and then went on to earn her Master of Science at the State University of New York where she majored in Education. Most recently, Cathy has taught French in the Schoharie Central School District where she single-handedly reinvigorated the French program and developed a curriculum based on NY state and National Standards for Foreign Language. A graduate of the Rassias Foundations Accelerated Language Program at Dartmouth College, Cathy brings with her an enthusiasm for linguistics and culturally-based learning. We are also pleased to announce that Missy Shea will be joining the GMVS faculty on a full time basis. Missy will expand her teaching responsibilities and will also assume the role of Associate Dean of Academics. As the Civic Education and Voter Outreach Coordinator for the Vermont Secretary of State (2006-2010) and member of both the Waitsfield Elementary School Board and the Washington West Supervisory Union Board, Missy brings with her both a strong commitment to education and excellent administrative skills. Missy will divide her energy between the classroom and addressing the unique needs of the middle school child (our 7th- and 8th-graders). Finally, we have committed to hiring a Special Educator who will

  • work to support students with diagnosed learning needs. The Special Educator will work in conjunction with Amanda Krebs, who will continue in her role in as head of the GMVS Writing Lab.
