Hymn of Dedication

“How Firm a Foundation” Rippon, 1787

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,

is laid for your faith in his excellent word!

What more can he say than to you he hath said,

to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,

for I am thy God and will still give thee aid;

I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand

upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.”

Hymn Of Invitation

“God Will Take Care of You” Civilla D. Martin, 1904

Be not dismayed whate’er betide, God will take care of you;

beneath his wings of love abide, God will take care of you.

Refrain: God will take care of you, through every day, o’er all the way;

he will take care of you, God will take care of you.

Through days of toil when heart doth fail, God will take care of you;

when danger fierce your path assail, God will take care of you. (Refrain)

Benediction

THE WORSHIP OF GOD October 3, 2021

Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome, Announcements & Opening Prayer

Hymn of Praise

“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” Martin Luther, 1529

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;

our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.

For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;

his craft and power are great,

and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing,

were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing.

Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he;

Lord Sabaoth, his name, from age to age the same,

and he must win the battle.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;

the Spirit and the gifts are ours, thru him who with us sideth.

Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;

the body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still;

his kingdom is forever.

Morning Prayer / The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the

kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Scripture Reading

“I am so small,” said the mole. “Yes,” said the boy,

“but you make a huge difference.”

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” said the Mole.

“Kind” said the boy. 1 Samuel 17:38-40, 48-49 38 Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail. 39 David strapped Saul’s sword over the armor, and he tried in vain to walk, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these; for I am not used to them.” So David removed them. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, and chose five smooth stones from the wadi, and put them in his shepherd’s bag, in the pouch; his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.

48 When the Philistine drew nearer to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 David put his hand in his bag, took out a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead; the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground.
