In its simplest expression, a green economy implies to reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services while ensuring the inclusive rise of income. Keeping in view the urgency of green growth, the UNEP launched Green Economy Initiative in the year 2008. This has been followed by other international organizations, such as, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific (UNESCAP). In 2010, ICC launched the unique global business Task Force on Green Economy which chalked out Green Economy Roadmap, for business, policymakers and society and it was published in 2012. In 2011 the OECD published a strategy towards green growth. Similarly, in 2012, the UNESCAP released the Low Carbon Green Growth Roadmap for Asia and the Pacific. India has a remarkable growth story over the last decades but not without environmental degradation, resource depletion and related problems of low productivity, poverty and inequalities. India’s environmental record is far below compared to the other BRIC countries. Therefore, green growth is desirable for Indian economy and at the same time can be made affordable and measurable also. This has been acknowledged at policy level in the National Climate Change Action Plan 2008 and National Mission for Green India, 2011 along with many other Environmental Acts and Regulations. However, a reality check is needed from time to time! Against this backdrop, the Centre of Advanced Study in Economics, Utkal University is organizing a National Seminar to deliberate on the issues pertaining to Greening of Indian Economy. Seminar Sub-themes The Sub-themes of the seminar are as follows: 1. Green Economy: Concepts, indicators and measurement 2. Valuation of environment and environmental services 3. Management of forests, land, air and water 4. Climate Change, mitigation strategy and action 5. Choice of technology and energy for a low carbon economy 6. Environmental regulation and enforcement Research papers relating to above themes and sub-themes are invited for making presentation in the seminar.
