Message from Fr. Steve Pinzon, Parochial Vicar

THE BLESSED SACRAMENT AND THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY The month of August on the Catholic calendar is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and to the Blessed Sacrament. St. John Bosco (1815-1888) had a prophetic vision of two things that are necessary in the times of trial for the Church: Devotion to Mary and frequent reception of Holy Communion. The "Heart of Mary" hearkens back to the Scriptures when Mary pondered and kept in her heart the great myster-ies of the Nativity and the Presentation in the Temple. Devotion and consecration to her heart has been promoted by various saints, popes, religious orders, and many others throughout the centuries. The "Blessed Sacrament" refers to the Holy Eucharist which is the most august of all the sacraments and said by the Church to be the source and summit of the Christian life. It is to be adored and consumed with the understand-ing that it is the real Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, who is the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. Song to the Blessed Sacrament

Poem to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

- Fr. Steve

If you are interested in joining our Parish Music Ministry please contact Jonathan Delgado at the Parish Office for more details. 609-522-2709 ext. 219 or visit a Music Minister after Mass. Our Adult Choir and Contemporary Ensemble and Cantors sing every Sunday throughout the year . New members high school age and up are always welcome, this includes our summer visitors as well! Our Children’s Choir will resume in the fall.

Therefore, the great Sacrament let us reverence, prostrate: and let the old Covenant give way to a new rite. Let faith stand forth as substitute for defect of the senses.

Tantum ergo sacraméntum Venerémur cérnui: Et antíquum documéntum Novo cedat rítui: Præstet fides suppleméntum Sénsuum deféctui.

I fain would sing a sweet new song Thy loving Heart to greet, I fain would cull the flowers fair, And lay them at thy feet. And of the precious virgin-gold And shining jewels rare, Would form a royal diadem, To grace thy forehead fair. But ah! the heart-strings seem un-strung And faint the music now, I cannot place a golden crown Upon thy queenly brow.

The first flowers fade too soon — What shall the offerings be From this poor exiled child of earth O purest Heart, to thee? I’ll offer all the burning love Of Jesus’ Heart for thine, And in that golden censer place The little spark of mine. And these, O Heart Immaculate, Shall be my gifts to thee ; Oh I pray thy sweetest Son to grant His love and thine to me.

Stewardship

August 4, 2019 ~ Stewardship Values 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Luke 12:15 The Gospel message today is contrary to our modern cul-ture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous life of Stewardship becom-ing more “other-centered” and less “self-centered.”

Family Reflection Corner

Weekly Readings Reflections 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:

Create a “Household Values” statement. Discuss the family’s priorities and values. Identify values that are most important to the household and write them down. Are the family members’ priori-ties in line with God’s teaching or do they need some adjusting

Reflect on how you can use your possessions, money and gifts in the service of God and neigh-bor. What organizations in your community are helping those in need? Get involved with this group!

Plan a family fun time together—a whole day if possible. Go fishing, bowling, or skating; go out for pizza. Talk about what each family member has learned lately or accomplished lately or done lately.

Together with your children sort through your cupboards. Make a commitment in advance that you and your children will donate to a food bank things from the cupboard which would be appro-priate. Discuss with your children that this is part of what Jesus meant when he said, “Share your gifts with others.”

The funds raised through this campaign do not go to our operation costs. We are using the funds raised in this campaign for: Enhanced Ministry to Senior Citizens Liturgy Enhancements Facility Improvements: ie. parking lots and roof NDDLM Catholic Education Scholarship

General Information

Holy Hour of Intercession The Youth and Young Adults Office at the Diocese of Camden requested that parishes come together in Intercessory Prayers for our youth. With so many daily distractions and temptations negatively affecting the mind, body, soul and spirit of our young people, it is important that we pray for healthy interactions and cor-rect moral values in their lives. We are therefore providing time each month when parishioners can come together to pray for all children and young adults, as well as all the intentions they hold in their hearts.

Our next holy hour will be Monday, Aug. 19, 2019 (the third Monday of the month),

at 9:00 AM at Kelly Hall

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Please consider signing up to spend thirty minutes or more before the Blessed Sacrament in Kelly Hall at Assumption Church on Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Sign up books for are at the back of each church and in Msgr. Kelly Hall. If you cannot commit to a specific time for a

month or two, please consider signing up to be a sub. AND please remember to sign in when you get to adoration. Thank you so much. God will truly bless you in a special way.

Vigil of the Feast of the Assumption and the Wedding of the Sea—August 14th at 4:30

This annual event on August 14th is quickly approaching. A few volunteers are needed to help decorate the church and our patroness, Mary. We will meet in St. Ann Church at 9am on the 14th. Volunteers are also needed to carry banners during the Feast of the Assumption Vigil Mass on August 14th. Banner carriers will carry a banner, showing a mystery of the rosary, into the church during the processional, carry the banner down to the beach for the Wedding of the Sea and rerun it to church after Bishop Sullivan blesses our ocean. 28 volun-teers are needed for this task! We will meet in St Ann Church at noon for a quick rehearsal and then again at 3:45 in the back of church. If interested please contact Jude Kelly at 609-972-9051. Thank you.

House of Charity—Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Liturgy Corner...learn something new or maybe even become inspired !

Question: Is there a difference between Hallelujah and Alle-luia? If not why are they spelled differently? Answer: Both words are the same. Hallelujah is a Hebrew word (Hallal, Praise) + (Yah, The Lord). Hence, Hallelujah means “Praise the Lord”. But the exact way that Hebrew letters are transliterated into English and other languages has varied a bit over time. Perhaps most influen-tial is the fact that the Greek New Testament rendered the Hebrew word Hallelujah as allelouia. And since Greek is generally more influential in English spellings than Hebrew, many English translations render the word as Alleluia. However, not an insubstantial number of English translators have preferred over the centuries, especially when translating the Old Testament Hebrew to render the term Hallelujah. Some translators will use Hallelujah for the Old Testament and Alleluia for the New Testament. Music has also influenced the decision over which spelling to use since some of the famous compositions from the Baroque period such as Messiah used the spelling Hallelujah that was more common in earlier English translations. At the end of the day, it is the same word, just with different spellings.

The House of Charity – Bishop’s Annu-al Appeal seeks to raise funds to provide care, respect, justice, peace and dignity for every soul in the Diocese of Camden. We ask that you prayerfully consider how this annual program provides solace, support and grace to thousands of your brothers and sisters in Christ and give, generously, in support of the 2019 House of Charity – Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Your support of the 2019 House of Charity – Bishop’s Annual Appeal ensures the vitality of essential Diocesan ministries and programs that sustain the healing, teaching and redemptive Presence of Jesus Christ through the Diocese of Camden.
