Big Day of Science

New Year 7’s

. . Welcome! . ....we are a GOOD

school...Ofsted Report 2010

see page 4 & 5

September 17th 2010 was Heathfield’s Big Day of Science. Around 90 year 6 students joined us for a day of hands on experiments. With the help from colleagues from the Robert Smyth School and a representative from Starchaser Industries we ran a series of workshops, looking at rockets, the moon, mars and bubbles.

This was a great opportunity for students from six local primary schools to make use of our facilities, meet our staff and work alongside our students. The feedback we have received shows that they all had a great time, learning and having fun.

The new year 7’s have settled in really well and are enjoying school very much. Thanks to all year 7 parents who attended parents evening and for all the positive comments made.

Thank you to all year 6 parents who visited us during September on our open day. We hope you enjoyed your visit. Please get in touch if you have any questions.

the School Sports Partnership.

CheerleadingSports Leaders Award leading to Primary school festivals and

Competitions eg Netball,Gym, multi skillsYoga • A Gifted and Talented in PE Programme

Street dance • Quality coaching from top county coaches Eg: Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton • Fencing

Inclusive Sports eg: Boccia Salsa • Sports Academies • Horse riding • Golf

3 OutdoorTable tennis tablesDrama Studio refurbished to include:

Rowing machine • Wii Dance, Fit & Sport • Table FootballBody Combat

The Governments decision to cut the Sportsfunding for Primary and Secondary School

PE means we could well go back to just the traditional sports eg football and netball!

What a shame! If you feel stongly about this write to your local MP, contact the local press etc

I hope that you will have had a chance to read our Ofsted report (ofsted.gov.uk). We are very pleased with the outcome and with all the great things the inspectors said about our students and the school.Heathfield High School has improved significantly since it was last inspected.

Assessment data are used very well to track the progress of individual students and to identify where support is needed.

Staff share an enthusiasm to move the school forward Students now make good progress as a result of good teaching.

Teachers all now provide clear learning objectives that are shared with students.

Activities often involve students in interesting paired and group activities.

Students all know their targets in every subject, and frequently reflect

on their current levels of attainment to determine what they need to do to improve their work.

The school’s thorough analysis of assessment data shows that students meet or exceed their challenging targets.

...particular strengths in the core subjects of English, mathematics and science, and in the school’s specialist subject, technology.

The support provided for students with special

educational needs and/or disabilities means that they make similar progress to that of their peers.

Tutors play a key role in using data to drive up standards.

2010 has seen greatly increased numbers of students achieving higher levels.

Students are proud to belong to the school and their attendance is high.

They value their teachers and the support they receive.

...students enjoy good relationships with each other and with staff, contribute much through year and school councils, and actively support the wider community through extensive charitable work.

...improvements in teaching, learning and students’ progress indicate the school has good capacity to improve further.

Students’ personal development is good.

...numeracy and literacy skills when they leave and their high levels of attendance fit them well for their future life in education and employment.

what Ofsted 2010 said ...

...behaviour is good, and they are polite and thoughtful when moving about the building and in class.

Students enjoy school.Student participation in sport is good, with a broad range of activities on offer.

The school’s good teaching typically features well-structured lessons.

The school’s arrangements for safeguarding students are well organised and taken very seriously by governors and staff.

Transition from primary school is effective.

The large majority of parents and carers expressed their support for the school.

The school takes a strong line with bullying … As a result, there is very little bullying in school.

..students enjoy their lessons, work hard and appreciate the way teachers support their learning.

Attendance

• If your child is absent from school, please phone us on the first day of absence before 9.30 am, and then write a note in the student planner for when they return.

• We would encourage parents not to take their children out of school for holidays in term time. It is very difficult for students to catch up on the work they miss and could affect their achievement. If unavoidable please let us know at least two weeks in advance, by filling in a Holiday Application Form.

• If your child has to visit the Doctors, Dentist or Opticians, please try to arrange these after school hours or during the holidays. Sometimes it can’t be helped but please ensure that you let the Attendance Manager or Form Tutor know in advance.

ICT SOFTWARE FOR USE AT HOME

Lots of free or cheap software is available to download or buy. Check out the link on the school website for details. Some of these are used in ICT lessons and it would be helpful if pupils could also use them at home. These include "Sratch", "movie-maker", "artrage" and "audacity". If you do not have microsoft office on your computers it is worth checking out the open source software that is fully compatible with office software.
