September 17th 2010 was Heathfield’s Big Day of Science. Around 90 year 6 students joined us for a day of hands on experiments. With the help from colleagues from the Robert Smyth School and a representative from Starchaser Industries we ran a series of workshops, looking at rockets, the moon, mars and bubbles.

This was a great opportunity for students from six local primary schools to make use of our facilities, meet our staff and work alongside our students. The feedback we have received shows that they all had a great time, learning and having fun.

The new year 7’s have settled in really well and are enjoying school very much. Thanks to all year 7 parents who attended parents evening and for all the positive comments made.

The Governments decision to cut the Sportsfunding for Primary and Secondary School

Sporting Achievements 'First netball match of the season saw us take nearly 40 girls to St Martins!!!! year 9 and 8 lost but yr7s made a great start and won!!' Year 7 also won against Redmoor 16-6.

Local Area Trampolining Competition Results

Lauren Smith – 9CC – won the Advanced Plus routine and the overall competition.Charlotte Wale – 7TW – came 3rd in the Advanced Plus routine.

Annabel Stocks – 8GH – came 3rd in the Advanced routine.Emma Warrington – 9CC – won the Beginners routine.All girls achieved highly and overall scores placed us in 3rd position. Many thanks, Jo Brice.

Well Done 8MR winning the Year 8 Tutor Group Football competition, and to 8VS who were Runners-up.

I hope that you will have had a chance to read our Ofsted report (ofsted.gov.uk). We are very pleased with the outcome and with all the great things the inspectors said about our students and the school.Heathfield High School has improved significantly since it was last inspected.

Assessment data are used very well to track the progress of individual students and to identify where support is needed.

Staff share an enthusiasm to move the school forward Students now make good progress as a result of good teaching.

Teachers all now provide clear learning objectives that are shared with students.

Activities often involve students in interesting paired and group activities.

Students all know their targets in every subject, and frequently reflect

on their current levels of attainment to determine what they need to do to improve their work.

The school’s thorough analysis of assessment data shows that students meet or exceed their challenging targets.

The support provided for students with special

Attendance

• If your child is absent from school, please phone us on the first day of absence before 9.30 am, and then write a note in the student planner for when they return.

• We would encourage parents not to take their children out of school for holidays in term time. It is very difficult for students to catch up on the work they miss and could affect their achievement. If unavoidable please let us know at least two weeks in advance, by filling in a Holiday Application Form.

• If your child has to visit the Doctors, Dentist or Opticians, please try to arrange these after school hours or during the holidays. Sometimes it can’t be helped but please ensure that you let the Attendance Manager or Form Tutor know in advance.

ICT SOFTWARE FOR USE AT HOME

Lots of free or cheap software is available to download or buy. Check out the link on the school website for details. Some of these are used in ICT lessons and it would be helpful if pupils could also use them at home. These include "Sratch", "movie-maker", "artrage" and "audacity". If you do not have microsoft office on your computers it is worth checking out the open source software that is fully compatible with office software.

sing at the ‘Voice in a Million’ concert at Liverpool. Hundreds of

schools take part and sing together in a huge choir.

Sam Clark (aka Ringo Brown) from the hit Aussie soap Neighbours visited Heathfield on Tuesday 26th October!Leading up to the UK debut release of his brand new single Devastated, Sam has been featured in “OK“ magazine. Devastated will be released in the UK as a double A-side single, featuring the bonus track Suddenly, as performed by Sam’s onscreen character, Ringo Brown on Neighbours during the much anticipated wedding of Ringo & long-time sweetheart, Donna.Along with guitarist Pete Vlanes they entertained pupils with some acoustic versions of his singles and a DVD presentation of his latest video.
