PROJECT: SPAGHETTI HOUSE,WESTFIELD SHOPPING CENTRE, LONDON

DESIGNERS: RICHARD DANIELS DESIGN PLC

The designers on this project wanted to use an artisaninspired metal ring of drums, and incorporate them into asofter and more sophisticated pendant lampshade fitting.

We were able to work with the design brief to engineer andfinish the metalwork, and to convert the concept into a trulybespoke ceiling fitting.

Working with RDD Plc we designed an outer lampshadeusing pleated metallic voile, that was sympathetic to, andenhanced by, the metal ring design. An acrylic diffuser wasalso introduced to reduce glare from the light source.

We are happy to offer a service to use customers own material to make lampshades.

All COM orders need to be checked for compatibility with our production process and we ask that a small piece of theproposed fabric is sent to us before we confirm that production is possible. We also make it clear that the COM fabric issent entirely at the customers own risk and we are not able to take responsibility for lost or damaged material.

Please use the table below to work out how much fabric is required to make your lampshade. This is a guide only and ifyou have any concerns please ask our staff for confirmation. Please allow extra fabric for a diffuser if applicable.

The original GLS type lamps are being phased out tomake way for more energy efficient lamps like thecompact fluorescent (CFL), and LED’s amongst others.

We strongly suggest that you use CFL lamps that arecoded “warm white”, have a colour temperature value of2800 ̊ k (sometimes coded 827), with our lampshades.These lamps give a light output that is closest to theoriginal GLS tungsten filament lamp that we havebecome used to.

Make sure you choose the appropriate strength of lightoutput by using the table below as a guide: it showswhich CFL lamp gives the same light output as thecorresponding GLS style lamp.

You also need to be sure that your chosen lamp will fitwithin the lampshade itself and does not protrude aboveor below the shade. Please check before you buy.

Please remember that CFL lamps take a little time towarm up and deliver their maximum light output. Theyare designed to last between 8 and 15 times as long asthe original GLS filament lamps. As a rule, over thelifetime of a CFL lamp, you should make considerablecash savings.

Finally please dispose of your CFL lamps at a recognisedrecycling centre local to you. It really will make adifference.

HINTS & TIPS

Coloured and contrasting liningsadd dramatic effect and a hint of

sophistication to the designscheme

Silver capped bulbs reduce the glare fromlampshades where the bulb is visible - thisworks for pendants too

Dark and opaque lampshades throw lightout through the top and bottom of the shadeonly for a stunning visual effect

Gold linings in a lampshade help tocreate a warm and cosy ambience

If you propose to use a dimmer with yourlampshade you need to check that the bulbis dimmable AND that the dimmer that youhave in mind is compatible with the bulb.
