Father Charles Brandt recently captured these buffl eheads – small diving ducks commonly seen in surrounding bays and estuaries along our coast in the fall and winter months. “Usually seen in small groups of between eight and 15,” says nature lover Brandt. “It has a high-domed forehead with a grey bill. The female is grayish in colour with a white cheek patch.” To submit your photos for MidWeek send them to [email protected]

MidWeek / November 16, 2011 3
For the last few years the online auction business has been dominated by big name players, most noticeably EBay.
It was inevitable that sooner or later someone would step in and try to push them aside – and that push has begun in earnest with the introduction of penny auctions.
Although the new style auctions each have their own individual names these sites are generically dubbed penny auctions because the bid increments are set at a measly ‘penny’ per bid. You may even have seen the glitzy ads on TV or in the press for such alternative ‘online auctions’ promising terrifi c bargains.
The hype surrounding penny auctions promotes
the idea that you can, for instance, buy a brand-new, still in the box, high-tec $800 computer for as little as $9.95. Sounds
fabulous – a new computer for next to nothing and a dramatic saving of around $790 – how cool is that? It’s like something for nothing - ‘sign me up!’ I hear
you shout. Well wait my friend and we shall see.
The penny auctions are, for the most part, operating legal and legitimate businesses operating quite openly. However, and there has to be at least one ‘however’; the savings you make may not actually be savings at all!
Unlike the more traditional online auctions, penny auctions have a couple of non-traditional terms and conditions.
Unlike a regular auction, be it online or a conventional ‘in house’ auction with penny auctions you have to actually pay up-front to be able to take part and place your bid; some even charge an additional membership fee before you can take part.
At a conventional auction you place your bid on what you want; if you’re the highest bid - it’s yours, or to use the current term - you win! Simple, though at some auctions you may have to pay an additional ‘buyer’s premium’ of anywhere from 10 to 25 per cent. Once the premium of 25 per cent is added your ‘winning bid’ of say $100 the total owing would come to a hefty $125 – and don’t forget that there can be additional P.S.T. on top that.
Many penny auctions charge a fee each time you place a bid and as the bidding increments are set at
a mere penny per bid you may have to place as many as 225 bids to win something which eventually sells for $5.
To give an example, let’s say the item you really want is ‘listed’ at a ridiculously low start price of just 50 cents. How can you resist? After all it’s 50 cents plus a penny - what a deal! Or is it? To get from the start price of 50 cents to $5 we need there to be 450 bids at a penny per bid. So if there are two of you bidding you will need to place around 225
bids (depending upon who bid fi rst). In the heat of the moment you have probably forgotten that win or lose for each bid placed it’s going to cost the bidder 60 cents.
Remember, although you are bidding in penny increments you will have to actually pay the auction company 60 cents for each penny you bid - so if my math is correct, your 225 bids charged at said 60 cents per is going to set you back

The temperature is dropping and people who are into fl y fi shing are spending more time behind the vise fi lling those boxes for spring.I checked in with Rob Worrall at Tyee Marine in Courtenay. We discussed the fi shing season and the word “awesome” described it best.Comox and Wolf lake are great spots to fi sh with the family, there is easy access to Maple lake with some nice reports of fi sh being caught off shore. Maple will be my next lake to take my fl oat tube and cast out a leech or woolly bugger fl y.This time of year, get down with a sinking line and hope for a strike. I visited Ship Wrecked Bead Shop and learned that owner Leanne Reid has tied fl ies in the Prince George area and hasn’t touched the vise in years. Many anglers who tie fl ies these days are picking up feathers, beads and other odds and ends to create fl ies that will catch
fi sh. Hobby shops are full of useful beads, feathers and glues to enhance your supply box. Local anglers in Campbell River are fi shing the Hump and Cape Mudge. Feeder springs are feeding on herring and needlefi sh.When the weather is good, try fi shing the ebb
tide, the water is clear and fl ashers are not needed.I had a chance to drive past St Jeans cannery depot in Campbell River and talked with a couple of American anglers who had a cooler of salmon ready to unload. Sports fi shermen play a big role at the cannery, more than 10,000 anglers visit the business every year. When I heard Calgary had new snow, I phoned Dave Anderson who distributes thousands of fi shing fl ies across western Canada. His top selling fl ies are Muddler Minnow, Copper John and beadhead fl ies.If you are new to the area, we are setting up a coffee night to talk fi shing, share stories and learn from each other the art of fl y tying, and the exchange of feathers and ideas to make this sport fun for all.

$135 in bidding fees alone - and that’s on top of the $5 you owe for the item you ‘won’. So what you thought was a $5 bargain will actually cost you $140 plus applicable taxes and any shipping fees.
Meanwhile, equally caught up in the bidding frenzy your competitor bidder (who goes away with absolutely nothing other than the pleasure of bidding) has placed 224 bids also costing 60 cents
per bid thereby giving the auction house an additional $134.40.
Not quite the deal either of you were expecting, eh? Well while you await your ‘win’ to arrive the penny auction promptly collects $274.40. Not a bad profi t for apparently very little effort eh?
But wait - there’s more! To take part in many a penny auction you have to make an initial purchase of a ‘bidder’s package’ meaning that before you are awarded the
privilege of placing a single bid you must pay money ‘up front’ as well as supplying your credit and or banking information.
Not only that, although each of the auctions has a time limit, every time a bid is placed the limit is extended by a further 10 or 20 seconds. This time extension is apparently done to keep it ‘fair for everybody who may want to bid at the last moment.’ However, in reality, the extension has the effect of
causing the bidders to become embroiled in a ‘bidding war’ thereby causing the punters (bidders) to throw caution to the wind and keep bidding; after all, ‘it’s just another penny.’
It’s not a bad world within which we live but there are cautions and precautions which we would all be wise to take. The phrase ‘buyer beware’ originated for a reason. As for taking part in any penny auctions do a little research beforehand to check the terms and
conditions and perhaps take the time to take a look at the excellent informational video blog of Oct. 20 2011 by CTV’s consumer affairs expert Pat Foran. Look for him at www.ctv.ca.
Meanwhile happy (bargain) hunting and let’s hope you do fi nd that elusive ‘penny bargain!’

You don’t need a badge to help build safety in your community - a crime prevention action plan can help you and your neighbours tackle crime and victimization risks to local youth, families, homes and businesses.
Crime prevention works best when it’s planned and delivered locally by engaging a
variety of people. The proof is in
the varied efforts of hundreds of volunteers who have helped build safer communities throughout B.C.
While many of those efforts and programs are well-established, there
are tools to help you organize and activate a plan to make your community safer.
The online guides listed below can help to take steps to develop your action plan, including:
● Defi ning your community. Who are
your stakeholders, interest or citizen groups, or others? Or, is your community best defi ned by geographic boundaries, common interests (such as faith or business groups), or a shared activity, like a sport?
● Mobilizing
your community by identifying and mobilizing specifi c partners. In reaching out to them, questions you may ask include: Who is affected by crime and related problems? Who is at risk of victimization?
Who is already
involved in crime prevention?

COURTENAY — They spread cheer by helping those who may have overindulged, fi nd a safe ride home, and the local branch of Operation Red Nose (ORN) is hoping for more volunteers this holiday season.
“Last year we had 50 volunteers that helped provide safe rides for over 446 people in our fi rst year of service ... (this year) we’re hoping for 80 or as many as 100, said Tricia Scavarda, ORN co-ordinator. “The more volunteers, the more rides.”
During the offi cial launch Thursday morning, Scavarda
said the program was created to encourage responsible behaviour around impaired driving by enabling communities to provide a free and confi dential chauffeur service during the holiday season. Volunteer drivers along with a navigator will pick up riders and drive them home in their car, while an escort driver will follow in another vehicle. The service is free, added Scavarda, but patrons are encouraged to make a donation.
“Our mission this year is to increase exposure to local businesses through their spirit of giving, and donations received will go towards funding
ValleyLinks youth programs,” she noted. “Today, more than 100 organizations across Canada benefi t from the proceeds from
Operation Red Nose campaign.”
Comox Valley RCMP Insp. Tom Gray said ORN is good at keeping impaired
drivers off the road.“Let’s face it, people
who drive impaired are a risk to your family, to my family and we need to put an end to that.
“There’s no excuse; you must fi nd a way to get yourself home safely without driving impaired,” he said. “From a policing perspective, we will be out looking for people who are driving impaired. The consequences are extremely serious. I’m asking people to think ahead.”
Comox Fire Chief Gord Schreiner volunteered as a driver for the program last year, and said the experience was very worthwhile.
“It’s meaningful, it’s
worthwhile, you meet some nice people while doing it along the way and you’re doing something positive in the community,” he added. This year, ORN is servicing Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland and Royston on Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. beginning Nov. 25 through Dec. 31, excluding Dec. 23 and 24. To volunteer, pick up an application at the ValleyLinks offi ce at 532 5th Street, or visit www.valleylinks.net or www.operationrednose.com

PORT MCNEILL— BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) announced an important training initiative for primary care paramedics
from several North Vancouver Island communities.
“I am extremely excited to be part of this joint initiative between BCAS, the Justice Institute of B.C. (JIBC) and the Ministry of Advanced Education,” BCAS Superintendent Lance Stephenson said Nov. 4 at the Old School.
“By bringing primary care paramedic (PCP) training to the rural communities, BCAS and the JIBC are opening the door
to skill development and training while enabling staff to remain close to home,” he said.
In order to maintain high quality service to Port McNeill, BCAS partnered with the JIBC and the Ministry of Advanced Education to make this training initiative possible.
The success of this event would not be possible without the incredible support of the community and

As the holiday season approaches, begin your Christmas shopping with a visit to the Fair Trade Global Craft Fair.
This festive event will be held in the Timberline Secondary School gym in Campbell River on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Enjoy shopping for unique and beautiful items while supporting fair trade and environmentally sustainable projects around the world.
This is the fourth year the fair has been held at Timberline – over the last few years it has been very well attended by satisfi ed shoppers who enjoyed the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of meaningful gifts. Organizers of the Campbell River
fair hope that this event will continue to thrive and grow, with more and different vendors participating every year. Vendors at the fair will be selling products from many different countries.
Our local C. R. Grandmothers to Grandmother groups (in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation) will be at the fair again this year. They will
be selling a variety of items including delectable baked goods, Bumbrellas (bicycle seat covers), “It’s a Wrap” reusable sandwich wrappers, candles and other items.
This year, Interact students from Timberline will offer a gift-wrapping service. All proceeds from this endeavour will go towards making Shelter Boxes.
Town of Port McNeill, said Stephenson.
“BCAS employs many emergency medical responders and PCPs in small communities, such as Port McNeill, who have demanding full and part time jobs, families and other community commitments,” he said. “It can be challenging for these employees to attend long courses where travel, accommodations and time away from family are often required.”
Starting last week, 20 BCAS EMRs from the Northern Vancouver Island region — including Port McNeill, Port Hardy, Alert Bay,
Port Alice, Zeballos, Tahsis, Gold River and Sayward — took part in hands-on training to supplement the online training that’s already underway.
The PCP training will take approximately nine months to complete.
Throughout the duration of the course, the students will undergo training in the areas of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, airway management and general patient care.
Once fully qualifi ed, these PCPs will provide scene responses in the community of Port McNeill as part of BCAS’ commitment to high quality patient care across British Columbia. 4x
