    r Estate axes: The la w gradu-ally raises he estate ax exemptionfrom the current $600,000 o$l mil l ionby 2006. As a specialmeasure o keep more family armsintact, he law exempts ro m estatet axes he i r s t $1 .3 mi l l i on f thevalue of a family-owned usiness rfarm beginning ext year.

    ^ Easements: In addition oraising he estate ax exemption, henew aw allows up to 40% of thevalue of land subject o a conserya-t ion easement o b e exempted romestate axes f the land s within 25miles of a metropoli tan rea, na-t ional park, or wilderness rea, orwithin 0 mi les of an urban nationalforest . The exclusion s subject oseveral ddit ional equirements, ndis capped t $100,000 next year, butr ises n increments o $500,000 bythe year 2002. Section 08 of thelaw also allows heirs o placeconservat ion asements n inheri ted

    land after he landowner's eath oqualifu or th e exemption and avoidhigher state axes.

    Another provision of the ne wlaw permits ax-deductible onserva-t ion easements n land where
