…Pres. Race continued from front –

for one candidate. It’s been a long race, but, the winner is……Barack Obama! He has made history by becoming the first African American President. He received 364 electoral votes out of the 538 total. John McCain received 162 electoral votes and Missouri is still too close to call. Electoral votes are votes a candidate receives from the states. Only one candidate can get the electoral votes from all states except Nebraska and Maine who split theirs up. Obama has won most of the states. To win the presidency you must have the majority of the electoral votes, which is 270. This race has been really exciting and money consuming. Just think all this excitement will happen again just 4 years!

One Short Day in the Windy City

By Taylor Stuenkel

WARNING! If you are not a 7th grade student at Bradley Central, STOP READING THIS ARTICLE! The content does not concern you! Ok, there are no more tickets left for the 7th grade trip to see Wicked in Chicago. Wicked is all about the witches of Oz before Dorothy dropped in. Elphaba, as you may know as the Wicked Witch of the West, goes to Shiz University. She’s misunderstood, smart, fiery, and …. did I mention she has green skin? Galinda, the good witch, goes to Shiz as well. She’s popular, ambitious, and beautiful. She defines “dumb blonde”. How they end up as the Wicked Witch and the Good Witch, well, you’ll have to find out for yourself. This musical is based on the book by Gregory Maguire. Stephen Schwartz, who won a Grammy Award for the music in Wicked, composes all the music. Trust me…if you’re not going with this trip you should try to get your own tickets for another time. They are only $35.00 and that is cheap for the tickets.

U.S. Presidential Election Inspires the World

By Hannah Williams

November 4, 2008 – a history making election. All over the world, people waited for the news of who would become the next President of the United States. In Barack Obama’s father’s home village in Kenya, hundreds of people gathered around a big screen TV. A wave of cheers echoed from the small area when Obama was declared the winner. The President of Kenya even declared a holiday.

At the school Obama attended as a young boy in Indonesia, students were leaning out of the windows and cheering at the news of his victory.

From Africa to France to Turkey, people watched the election and praised the US as the true land of opportunity,

In Europe, Obama is very popular as well. In a Britain newspaper, they described Obama’s win as “One giant leap for mankind,” borrowed from Neil Armstrong’s famous quote from his lunar landing. Also, the president of France said, “Obama’s election raises hopes in France, Europe, and the rest of the world”.

President Elect Barack Obama has not only inspired the people of the country, but he has inspired the hopes and dreams of countries all over the globe.

African Ivory Sale Sparks Controversy

By Hannah Williams

The first authorized ivory auction in over ten years occurred in Nambia, Africa on Tues. Oct. 28. The ivory was taken from animals that died naturally, not from poaching. The $1.2 million dollars made from the ivory is going to programs made for elephant conservation. Although some think that the auction will help the endangered species, some think it will increase the demand for more ivory, and further endanger the elephants. Will Travers, the chief executive of the Born Free Foundation said, “It will do nothing to re-educate customers in China and Japan that buying the ivory is signing an elephant’s death warrant.” Over the next four auctions taking place during the next two weeks, Botswana plans to auction 48 tons; Zimbabwe plans to sell a little more than four tons; and South Africa wants to sell more than 56 tons of ivory.

Team Quest Victories

By Kaitlyn El-Talabani

On October 28, 2008 students from 7th and 8th grade went and competed in the Team Quest competition. The 8th grade team consisted of Mitchell Kahl, Abby Viglia, Derek Wunder, and Kaitlyn El-Talabani. As a team they achieved 4th place, therefore making it to the Regional competition later this year. The 7th grade team consisted of Taylor Stuenkel, PJ O’ Connell, Nathan Giacchino, and Jessi Xiong. They placed 2nd so they will also be going to Regionals. It was a wonderful experience for both teams.

Go Karts, Fun House and Slides, Prizes, Bowling, and Fun

By Destiny Lima

Yay! You know the BIP trip, you know Hidden Cove? That’s where we went! It was so much fun! We paid $10, say it with me….TEN DOLLARS…. for the WHOLE access pass. It was amazing! The giant slide never really had a line and it’s fun to race. Upstairs there is a mini fun house with a ball pit and a small slide, woohoo! Next to that is bumper cars. You can bump, crash, collide, spin, and everything else. Upstairs still, but across the room, there is mini bowling, so much fun! While you’re waiting your turn for bowling or bumper cars, you can overlook the bounce houses downstairs. The bounce houses make it fun to race. You jump in the hole, climb up the wall, slide down the other side, go through the tube thing into the “hit you in the face” tube, and then into the “hard to climb” wall. Once you get up, if you ever do, you slide down the slide. Now, the next bounce house is the “push you down face first” with double slides house. You climb up, up, up to the top. When you get up there you want a break, it’s so hot in there. So you sit and “chill” for a while. Then sooner or later everyone you know is practically up there and they push you down face first. Downstairs there is still arcade, food, prizes, etc. Now outside there is even more fun. There is mini golf where it is fun to cool off and hang out with your friends. The part you probably are waiting for is the go-karts! YAY! The line was always long as everyone waited for the “fast” car. It was a lot of fun! Woohoo! Check out Mrs. Allen’s webpage to view pictures of the 8th graders during their BIP trip! (www.bradleyschools.com - Click on Bradley Central then Classrooms then 8th grade then Mrs. Allen then Scrapbook). Happy Viewing!

Lady Knights

Win Again!

By Jamie Sarkozi

On Nov. 5, 2008, the Lady Knights played an exciting game against St. Anne. The game was tough, but St. Anne was no match for us. 26-8 was the final score for the 7th grade game. Kelli Bates led the way by putting ten points on the board, but it wasn’t all Kelli. Each member of the team had a chance to play and almost everyone scored. Coach Wagoner states, “It was a great team effort!”

Our 8th grade Lady Knights won 19-16. It was a close game and our ladies showed great effort and support for each other. Holly Regnier had four steals and Ashley Sauls shot and made three out of four free throws. It was a great game.

Both coaches and all Lady Knight basketball players would like to thank those who showed their support and came out to the game. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Kevio Williams

By Nichole Kestleloot

I interviewed my friend, Kevio Williams. I found out that Kevio’s favorite color is red. He said he loves to eat at Pizza Hut. His favorite kind of topping is pepperoni. Kevio also likes cheeseburgers. Kevio loves to play basketball. He was home schooled for about a year, but before that he played on his school basketball team and the team won a game. His home state is Ohio. He also likes to read, but the times he isn’t reading or shooting baskets, he is playing his video games. Kevio also informed me that he has wanted a pit-bull named Killer. The next thing I am going to say is a big shocker. I asked Kevio if he had ever been to Six Flags. He said no that he hadn’t . Oh well. Kevio is fun to hang out with and it is fun to be around him. If you want more information on him feel free to ask him.

Miss Nicholson By Haley Lutes

I interviewed Miss Nicholson, a 6th grade Language Arts teacher. I learned so much about Miss Nicholson that I didn’t know. Her favorite part of Language Arts is getting kids to love to read. Miss Nick’s favorite book in the 6th grade was and still is Island of the Blue Sea. She has one pet that a dog. It is a German Sheppard but she says it is all black so it looks like a black lab. It is named towards a Greek Goddess of the Moon named Artemis, but Artie for short. Her attitude towards her students is she wants kids to reach as high as they possibly can academically speaking and she always wants students to give their best effort. Miss Nick loved when she went to London, England because she saw Princess Diana & visited Sherlock Holmes’ residence. Illinois State University is where Miss Nick got her Bachelor Degree and she got her Masters Degree at University of Illinois. In middle school she loved P.E. and Social Studies. Bradley Central was not the first school she taught at. She first taught at Lafayette in Kankakee, 1st grade. Miss Nick loves to eat a Roditys, a Greek restaurant in Greek Town, in Chicago. Miss Nicholson’s birthday is June 3. I hope you learned some interesting facts about Miss Nicholson. I know I did.

Dear Miss Advice,

Every year around Thanksgiving I always get the flu. It really stinks because I can’t spend time with my family. What should I do? Sincerely,

Sickie

Dear Sickie,

If I were you I would go get a flu shot. They really work but they do hurt. You should get one if you’re not scared of needles.

Who Knew? By Brianna Egan

Did you know that the flag that inspired the “Star Spangled Banner” tune had only 15 stripes and 15 stars? At the time the flag was made there were 15 colonies, instead of 13. Mary Pickersgill made the flag. Francis Scott Key wrote the tune based on her flag.

Hey, do you want to know how to strut your stuff? Well I can help you. The best style is your style, what I mean is if you ever look at your clothes and decide that your outfit is way too boring, well then just add a little you. You could add adorable earrings or a totally punk rock belt. Just remember to show who you are through your fashion.

Career Craze

By Abby Viglia

Becoming president isn’t a walk in the park. Presidents have a big responsibility and it isn’t always fun and games. So if you ever decide that you wanted to be prez you would have to be a natural born citizen and 35 years old or older. That’s the easy part; the hard part is getting the nomination from the party you are in (Democrat, Republican, or a third party). So if you make it all the way through the presidential race, you get four years to be the leader of the country, and if people like you, and you run again, you can be president for another four years. As president you are in charge of the armed forces, you appoint people to the Supreme Court, and you approve and veto laws. So, you like your ipod? It’s pretty expensive right? Well, the president makes $400,000 a year. Think of how many ipods you could get with that money, and if you think that’s a lot, the president still gets paid for traveling and entertaining. They also get a free house and free transportation. Being president has some pretty good benefits, so do YOU want to be president?

Titanic

Review by Brooke Berger

Titanic’s director is James Cameron. The movie was released in 1997. Jack Dawson is played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Rose DeWitt Bukater is played by Kate Winslet. April 10, 1912 was the Titanic’s maiden voyage. How many people survived the Titanic is one of the most frequently asked questions regarding the history of this legendary ship. Of the 2,227 passengers and crewmembers that set sail, only 705 Titanic passengers survived. Today the last survivor is a third class passenger who is in a retirement home. Her name is Millvina Dean. So many died in the movie because the crewmembers loaded 16-30 people in lifeboats when they could put 68 passengers in a boat at a time. It was too late for third class passengers to get on lifeboats. When crewmembers finally went back to the wreck in the Atlantic Ocean to look for survivors, it was too late. Only six were saved from the water including Rose. Jack was with Rose when they both went down, and he doesn’t survive, and before that happens Jack says, “Don’t let go, because we’re going to survive.” She says, “I won’t let go Jack.” But when she finds out he didn’t survive Rose fends for herself and lets go to get the crew’s attention. Titanic is one of the most loved movies in America and also one of the saddest ones too.

ONE MORE JOKE

By Kelsey Vance

The pro football team had just finished their daily practice session when a large turkey came strutting on the field. While the players gazed in amazement, the turkey walked up to the head coach and demanded a tryout. Everyone stared in silence as the turkey caught pass after pass and ran right through the defensive line. When the turkey returned to the sidelines, the coach shouted, “You’re terrific!” Sign up for the season, and I’ll see to it that you get a huge bonus. “Forget the bonus,” the turkey said, “All I want to know is, does the season go past Thanksgiving Day?”
