Gainesville is a safe andhealthy community. GPD Mission: Together as a communitywe foster order, safety and freedom. 2015 Goals Continue to effectively manage crime to ensure a safe community. Increase the trust between GPD and the community it serves. Ensure our actions are compassionate, consistent and constitutional. Enhance the abilities of GPD through training and equipment. Foster community engagement utilizing the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing. Promote command positions and hire new officers to replace retirees. Ensure that problem oriented policing projects are a main staple of GPD. Increase the diversity of GPD employees. Recap of 2014 Goals Opening of the Operations Building, 545 NW 8th Ave. Strengthen our community policing commitments throughpartnerships and training. Implement and embrace DMC strategies in all of the neighborhoodsthat we serve and protect. Created the Youth and Community Services Division Created an online reporting system for citizens to report crime Roll-out the patrol schedule which provides more sworn officer presence during peak calls for service (CFS). Applied and received a two-year grant fromthe Center for Childrens Law and Policy. Leading the efforts in reducing the arrests of African-American youth in our schools and our community. Developed alternatives to arrests through our collaboration with Meridian and CDS. Give the officers and supervisors other options besides arresting our youth. Demand the issuance of civil citations for first time misdemeanor offenders. Police / Youth Dialogue
Monthly meeting involving officerswith at-risk youth utilizing communityconferencing techniques. Breakdown and understand behavior ofyouth and officers. Learn about brain developmentnature vs nurture. One-on-one dinner between the youth andthe officer. Discuss similarities hope and dreams. Role playing flip the script let the kids becops. Meets at GPD with: DJJ, Judiciary, SBAC, CDS , Camelot, Partnerships for Strong Families, River Phoenix Peace Building Foundation, ASO, Teen Court, School Board Member Eileen Roy, City Commissioner Hinson-Rawls, State Attorneys Office, University of Florida GOAL? Develop a System of Care to address the needs of our youth prior to entering the Criminal Justice System and Develop intervention programs for those already in the Criminal Justice System. 2014 Results:We reduced VOP arrests in City schools by 90%.We reduced campus arrests in City schools by 35%. Reichert House After school program designed for 2nd12th grade youth who are in need of assistance in making the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The Reichert House is operated in a paramilitary fashion. The program has a middle school and separate high school component. The Reichert House offers a combination of discipline, work, and social and recreational activities which foster a balanced environment for those enrolled. STEM Center A sampling of the activities and events that occur each year include: Academic assistance Etiquette training Employment through YES program Trips to local institutions and othercities and theme parks in the region Anger/Stress managementtechniques and training Vocational training Community Service Nightly meals in a traditionalfamily setting BOLD Program Brave Overt Leaders of Distinction (BOLD) is a re-entry program designed for young men 16-24 Participants have been in the criminal justice system and need assistance with their path towards personal success. Participants lack a high school diploma or GED and are currently unemployed BOLD provides education, work and life experience Gainesville Police Explorers
Explorer Post 917 began over 30 years ago, and is a youth program for high school students interested in law enforcement. Explorers gain knowledge of the law, develop importance of community service, leadership qualities and responsibility.Post 917 is chartered through the Boy Scouts of America and is sponsored by GPD.Explorers are volunteers and receive community service hours, which averages over 4,000 community service hours a year for the Gainesville Community. Post 917 is a member of the Florida Association of Police Explorers (FAPE).Explorers compete for awards and prizes.A competition team travels statewide to events competing and representing Post 917. Requirements for Post 917: 14-20 years old (in or entering school) Must be in school and maintain a C average or better No major criminal charges Free of drugs, alcohol and smoking Parental Consent Administrative Services Bureau
