Another November, another fantastic roast featuring Roast Master Bruce Curley! The venue at Trilogy Rio Vista worked out great and it sure seemed like everyone had a great time. I do hope everyone appreciates the time that Bruce, as well as Ernie, puts into these SRBCNC productions. They make this club stand out above all others with their creativity!

This year’s after Thanksgiving Cruise was cancelled again this year due to the growing Hyacinth disaster. This is very unfortunate but we have to consider the safety of our boats, knowing how much debris is buried

among the Hyacinth, just waiting to damage our running gear. Getting into or out of Stockton right now is very tough. So far the New Year’s Eve Cruise is still on, but to date only one boat has signed up. We’ll track this and make a decision as we get a bit closer. Even if boats don’t make it in, Marina West will be having their party so don’t be afraid to make it by car! MWYC always puts on a great New Year’s Eve Party!

To use Skip Switzer’s idea, this is my article 35 of 36 and I have to say that it has been a pleasure representing the group as Commodore, and all of the way through the chairs. I encourage those that have not yet ventured into this opportunity to take a leap and get involved. I have learned much over the past years and, in spite of what people had warned, I have not been burned out by taking on this responsibility. If we were

a brick and mortar club, things would be different I am sure! I see this club being in great hands for years to come and look forward to being involved as a board member or just an active member for the foreseeable future. The only thing I see us needing to concentrate on to remain the best cruising club on the Delta is membership. We all need to recruit new members by talking to other Sea Ray owners, hand out line cards, work with boat brokers, etc!

My helpful link for this month is for a great product to replace standard carpeting in our cockpits. Plan B is being outfitted with this currently! Curt at West Coast Canvas (long time advertiser) is doing this work. Come check it out at our next club function! http://infinitylwv.com/

Until the lines are untied again,

Ken

From the WheelVice Commodore SUE HALLING

Last month we traveled to Sault Ste. Marie, MI to see John’s Sister and brother-in-law before we continued on to Montreal, Canada.

Sault Ste. Marie is a beautiful small town in the very Northern tip of Michigan and directly across the water from Sault Ste. Marie, Canada which is not such a small town. It happens to be on Lake Superior just at the edge of the lock system. From their living room they can see the superstructure of the boats moving into the locks. We discovered that you can hear the engines while trying to sleep.

After that we traveled to Montreal, where we boarded the Crystal cruise ship Symphony

and cruised to New York. John had always wanted to travel the St. Lawrence Seaway. There are many many islands with homes, mostly none of which we got to see because the ship traveled at night. Our stops were Quebec, Charlottetown, PEI (Prince Edward Islands), Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Then Portland, ME, Boston, MA, Newport, RI, with the final destination of New York City.

Halifax was instrumental as a starting point for convoys headed to Europe. Supposedly, one day at sea was saved by starting in Halifax as opposed to New York.

Portland was an important stop for John, as it was the final state. He now claims to have been to them all.

Newport, RI was the home of the America’s Cup for many many years. One of the shore excursions was an afternoon on one of the old America’s Cup boats. John would have loved doing that, but the

weather didn’t cooperate.

There was one stop we weren’t able to make - Magdalen Is. We were to anchor and ferry people. It was determined the water was too rough.

I found the Canadian ports beautiful. Each location had very unique stores featuring local wares. I was able to purchase beautiful alpaca wool products, honey from the bee-keeper, maple syrup and Anne of Green Gable books, with a signature from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s cousin, who still conducts tours in her home.

The last morning, we were up well before sunrise to watch the entry to New York. We had a wonderful view of Liberty Island, but completely missed Governor’s Island where John spent some time with the Coast Guard and Ellis Island where my Dad first entered this land.

We parked next to the aircraft carrier Intrepid Museum. From there we took a 1.5-hour bus ride to JFK. Now that was an interesting trip but there just isn’t room enough to talk about it here.

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday which is celebrated as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the Harvest. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations on different days and in different ways. We may not have had a Thanksgiving cruise to Village West as planned this year, but we can be thankful we did not have a cruise like the pilgrims had back in September of 1620. A small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth England, carrying 102 passengers. After a very difficult 66 days at sea they finally dropped anchor far north of their intended destination. One Month later they crossed the Massachusetts Bay to where the Pilgrims began the work of establishing a village. Throughout the first terrible winter, most of the colonist remained on board

the ship. They suffered from exposure, scurvy and disease. Only half of the original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In 1621, the colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. The History site online said that in November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a Thanksgiving feast and invited a group of the colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. This is remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”. The celebration lasted for three days. Much like our cruise would have. While no exact record exists of the menu, (because Jack Lewis was not there with his spreadsheet) the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that the

men went on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled, the meal probably did not include pies, which have become a big part of today’s celebrations. I hope you all had, and continue to have, an abundance to be Thankful for.

Cheers,

Shelia

Just a short note on the cancelled Thanksgiving Cruise:

I would like everyone to know that Elaine and I feel bad that we had to cancel another cruise because of the hyacinth that is once again overtaking the delta. Sure, we feel bad that the cruise was cancelled, but we are also upset that the work that Roger, Ken, and other club members have done over this past year was in vain. I can only guess how much time club members spent reporting hyacinth clusters to the “powers that be”, only to find out that they weren’t being taken seriously. Please remember those folks names next time you vote! Elaine and I do hope that the cruise was cancelled early enough, that alternate plans were made, and that everyone was able to share Thanksgiving with friends and family.

Again, Happy Thanksgiving,

Jack and Elaine Lewis

Yin and Yang. Water is your friend. Water is your enemy. It “Floats your Boat”, so to speak. Water under your keel is good. Water in your boat, bilges, engines or fuel is bad. Yin and Yang. Water is an electrolyte and a solvent. As an electrolyte it facilitates corrosion of many materials, particularly metals. As a solvent, it will dissolve certain materials. The key to keeping water on the proper side of the hull is regular maintenance.

Keeping the engines going is the big item for most boat owners and the emphasis is on oil changes. Yes, regular oil changes are good, but the majority of marine engine failures result from not maintaining

the cooling system. Whether you have an open or closed system, the water floating your boat is used to cool the engine. Whatever is in the water is also going through your engine. Hopefully, your raw water strainers will catch most of the gook. Now is a good time to clean them. The cooling water is circulated by the raw water pump. They have replaceable impellers and the rule of thumb for the Delta is to replace them every two years. Now is a good time to inspect/replace them. If you have a closed cooling system, you also have a heat exchanger. Heat exchangers need regular maintenance as well. The frequency will depend on the type water your boat operates in. Now is a good time to pull the end cap and see what’s what. If the cooling tubes are fouled, now is a good time to have them cleaned. If your coolant tank needs frequent filling, you are leaking coolant

somewhere. An external leak is bad, an internal leak is much worse. Now is a good time to investigate where it is going. Pray it is external.

Check your oil and transmission cooler hoses for leaks and abrasions. A little mirror on a stick will help see under and around connections. If your engines are developing rust on them something is wrong and needs to be corrected. It is probably from water entering the engine compartment either through the vents, leaking down from the deck or water evaporating in the bilge. Look under the deck to check for evidence of water entering through the vents. Check that hatch drain hoses are intact hose fittings snug. Lastly, keep your bilges dry, whatever it takes.

Next month, more on the Yin and Yang of water.

See you down river.

Steve

Winter is a magical time in the world and especially on the Delta. As the full moon shimmers on the water, holiday lights begin to twinkle everywhere. The hyacinth may have been a reason to cancel our Thanksgiving together, but it is not a reason to stop using our boats, even it means just visiting with friends on the docks in our marinas. That’s one of the best things about boating...friends! The Vinyards are very thankful for the camaraderie and close relationships we have with members of SRBCNC. We pray your Thanksgiving was a very special time for you to share with

your families and we are looking forward to ringing in the New Year with all of you at Marina West!

PICYA is all about boaters from a variety of clubs sharing the joy of being on the water. The association takes a break in December and the next event will be their Change of Watch to be held in January at Encinal Yacht Club. As always, PICYA encourages clubs from the Bay and Delta to become involved in new and exciting ways as well as participating in their annual events. I know I’ve mentioned the Wheelchair Regatta in previous articles, but this year our Bay Cruise is scheduled for the same weekend! It could be fun for SRBCNC to be involved in this opportunity to share our love of boating. As the preparations get underway in the new year, I’m sure Sue will keep you posted of the details on the chance you’d like to

participate. Mark your calendars for the last Saturday in September!

Did you know that the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the largest providers of treated water in the U.S., has expressed interest in purchasing at least four islands on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta? Many Northern California and Bay Area residents are concerned as the MWD supports the tunnel project, now known as the California Water Fix. There are several agencies working to stop the tunnels. You can check the website at Restore the Delta for the latest updates.

Have a Merry Christmas.

In HIs Time,

Roy
