November’s Longboat Leaders Character Trait: Empathy

I show that I am empathetic by: trying to understand what someone else is going

through. I show sympathy by showing my concern for a person, but I empathize with

them by putting myself in their shoes to help me better understand their feelings.

Empathizing with another person allows me to be a better listener and communicator,

and it gives comfort to someone in need of a friend.

In 1994, UNESCO inaugurated October 5 as World Teachers’ Day to

commemorate the joint UNESCO and International Labour Organization’s

(ILO) signing of the Recommendations Concerning the Status of Teachers.

World Teachers’ Day represents a significant token of the awareness,

understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that

teachers make to education and development. On October 5, along

with over 100 countries around the world, Canadians celebrated World

Teachers’ Day highlighting the contributions of the teaching profession.

At Tom Longboat, our School Council and community members

decorated the main office and staff room in honour of the day. Our staff

enjoyed treats and cards made by students and parents from our school.

Cross Country

On October 14th, 2016 this year’s cross country was held. It took place at Thomson Memorial park.

If we’re trying out for cross country, you know we have to train. We trained for about 2-3 weeks.

Every Monday and Wednesday we ran at lunch and every Tuesday and Thursday, before school. Ms. Yung

and Mr. Maskerine coached us. They pushed us over our comfortable limit to do our very best regardless

of whether we were first or last.

When it was race day, we had to come to school at 8:30. We took attendance, got our number that

was written on our hand and wore the official Tom LongBoat Jerseys to represent our school. Our school

was so supportive that Ms. Vinas and Mr. and Mrs. Waqar came with us to the park and cheered with us.

The grade 1s and 2s went first, but we didn’t have any grade 1s or 2s in the cross country team. Boys went

first then girls. When we heard the grade 3s were going on, we cheered as loud as we could. Everyone was

so nervous but we all gave each other pep talks and good luck words.

When all the primary’s have gone, it was time for the juniors. The

younger grades had to run 1 km, the older grades had to run 2 km.

When everyone had finished the race, we said good words like “Wow,

you did amazing out there.” After all the grades had been called, we ate

lunch and soon walked to meet the bus. Eleven people from our school

made it to finals, we all were so happy for them and wished them all

good luck.

They came back with news that none of them made it into top

20, and honestly it didn’t matter to us because they all ran their best

and they all had fun. That’s really all that matters. You don’t need an

award to be happy.

This year’s Cross Country meet was so fun and a little tiring.

We all just got to let loose for a day and enjoy the amazing weather, running for our school. I am totally

looking forward to the next Cross Country Event!

IMPORTANT

Student Pick-Up at Door 3 (Primary Doors)

As the weather is starting to get colder and wetter, we understand that families are eager to pick up their children quickly. However, in the name of student safety, we ask that you remain behind the pylons at dismissal time, so that teachers can ensure each student sees a family member pri-or to letting them exit their class line. Sometimes this process will take a few minutes, but if eve-ryone stays back behind the pylons, we can dismiss our studen students as quickly and safely as possible. Thank you for your co-operation.

2016/2017 Kids For Change Club

Hi Tom Longboat! We want to introduce this year’s Kids For Change (KFC) club mem-

bers. From grade 4, Ayesha and Bojan, from grade 5, Hetavi, Hafiza, Britney, Pearl and

Meghan, from grade 6 Ramahsa, Pirishaa, Jaanani, Aarabi, and Manjot.

This year the KFC club are doing many exciting fundraising events to help our school,

communities around the world and to reach our goal. Our goal is to help the WE Organi-

zation and raise enough money to build a school in Kenya, Africa. Thanks to the Long-

boat community we have raised $4,000 so far, isn’t that amazing?! But we still need to

raise $6,000 more to reach the goal of building a school. The KFC club has many fun

fundraising and school spirit events planned for this school year such as Vow of Silence,

Longboat vs Police basketball game, Tom Longboat Day, Crazy Hair Day, Movie Night

and much more. Stay tuned for more information for these and more exciting events.

WE Day Toronto

On Wednesday October 19th some Kids For Change (KFC) club members, Ms. Broomfield and Ms. Daniels

went to the Air Canada Centre to attend WE Day Toronto. WE Day is a celebration of youth making a dif-

ference in the world hosted by the WE (Free The Children) organization. Inspirational celebrities, Youtu-

bers and youths like us from around the world shared their experiences and stories on how they made a

positive difference in the world.

Some of the highlights of WE Day were when Zendaya hosted the event and explained to kids how to be

respectful to adults and their peers. Singer, Lilly Singh aka Superwomen shared with the crowd her ideas

about her ‘Girl Love’ campaign that sends girls in Africa to school. Macklemore and Winnie Harlow shared

their personal experiences about being bullied and how they overcame it. Now they are helping and teach-

ing others about bullying and how to deal with it. There were many more performance and inspirational

speakers that we learnt from.

We also learnt about another campaign called ‘Zinc Saves Lives’. This campaign is about collecting and re-

cycling AA Batteries properly. For 1 AA Battery collected it will save 6 children’s lives in developing coun-

tries around the world. The KFC Club will also be starting this campaign soon, stay tuned for details.

Overall, WE Day was fun, interesting and inspirational. Throughout the day and at the end of the day over

20,000 people at the Air Canada Centre came together to dance the WE Day Dance, that was a lot of fun.

MOVE - A - THON

Our first ever Move-A-Thon with Professor Jamz was held on

October 27th. While the weather was cold and rainy outside, we

were heating up the auditorium inside! Our students from

Kindergarten to Grade 6 moved and grooved while raising over

$3500 for excursions and special events at our school! We can't wait for Professor Jamz to return to Tom

Longboat next fall!
