At well over R17 a litre from earlyNovember, petrol has never beenmore expensive. But to my mindthat doesn’t mean we must stopdriving or having fun with our cars, but we do need to make sure they are as efficient as they canpossibly be. • CHOOSE A WINNER!An RGMotorsport-tunedVolkswagen Golf GTI clinchedanother major track championshipwhen Keagan Masters won theGTC2 category of the Sasol GlobalTouring Car series at Zwartkops onSaturday October 20. He was thereigning champion, having beentuned to victory by us in 2017 too!“We’re able to apply what we learn on the track to ourconversions for roadgoing cars, somotorsport remains an essentialpart of speeding up our R&D,”Steve Green said. “If you want topush the limits the track is theplace to do it and when it comesto turbocharged Golfs we’ve beendominant for more than a decadein national championships, first inBridgestone Product Cars and nowwith GTC2.”

DID YOU KNOW? We mentioned efficiency in ourintroduction, and timely servicingand maintenance is an importantpart of that. Delaying servicingwill cause a decrease in engineefficiency, not to mentionincreased engine wear due topoor filtration of air and oil. Now more than ever, controlling costs is critical sokeeping every car in the fleetrunning at its optimum matters.Talk to Robert in our servicedepartment about your car, orcars.

Dastek, inventors of the Unichip, are poised to launch their latest product –the Uni X. While the letter may suggest it is the 10th version it isn’t – rather,it represents the culmination of almost a quarter-century of research anddevelopment. We’ve used their ‘piggyback’ Engine Management Computer for more than20 years and have great faith in it. Rival products which have come onto themarket since then have ultimately been, to a greater or lesser extent, a copyof the basic idea. Our tuning boffins downstairs can’t wait to get hold of it: it boasts doublethe processing speed of its predecessor - the Uni-Q - and also operates acrossa wider voltage range, which brings with it many possibilities – like beingable to prevent a car from exceeding its idle speed (irrespective of what thedriver does with the throttle pedal!). Even more information can be fed into it (temperatures and pressures, specifically) than before and it is designed to integrate seamlessly with thevery latest and highly-sensitive vehicle electronics. This is also going to makeit extremely useful as a vehicle and driver management tool, also allowingfleet operators to more effectively control how the vehicle is used.

    X IS NEARLY HERE

A UNICORN IS ABOUT TO BE BORN

We’ve been pretty focussed on the Mustang for the last while, but it isn’t theonly V8 which we supercharge! Back in the shop is a Chrysler 300C SRT8, which belongs to our old friend Raghu

and to which we fitted a Whipple blower in 2014. The 6.4-litre V8 is a monsteralready and has 480 kW and 800 Nm!But Raghu wants more – along with the ability to get it to the tarmac. The shopping

list for the project includes not only things like camshafts, pistons and rods but also anuprated torque converter to handle it.

That was then: Rob Green hands over the keys for the 300C Supercharged to Raghu Chettyand this is now...big bore V8 has been completely rebuilt!

    GIULIA GETTING THE TREATMENT

TOO HOT TO HANDLE?Without getting into a debateabout climate change, it doesseem to be getting hotter – whichalso impacts what is happeningunder the bonnet!Heat kills performance, andthat’s why we offer a range ofproducts for owners of cars thatare called upon to work hard onoccasion (whether performance ortow vehicles). We can supplyanything from a custom Setrabengine oil cooler kit for theMustang to water-meth injection, intercooler upgrades forturbocharged cars and evenupgraded fan kits. Even for “ordinary” cars it isimportant to have a coolingsystem working well – age, wearon components like the waterpump and corrosion in the systemcan take its toll on the coolingefficiency. Talk to our sales teamabout your needs.

Research and Development matters and the entire point of it is to do theR&D before something gets to market! You don’t want your customer to beyour guinea pig.It takes time and we’ve been working on the 375 kW/600 Nm Alfa Romeo Giulia

QV for a number of weeks, getting to understand it good and proper before westart changing things. We’ve done some ‘before’ performance numbers and it isalready clear to us that getting the best out of it will be influenced by how well itcan get off the line by managing the various electronic system. The exhaust is done - beautifully - and watch this space for more on the Alfa!
