These are all concerns of the civil law, and an ecclesiastical annulment has absolutely no effects under civil law. It is a myth that granting an annulment makes the children illegitimate. An Annulment deals not with legitimacy but with validity of the bond between spouses. ~ Our Mission Statement ~ “The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because the Lord has anointed us

to proclaim: ‘Ecce Agnus Dei’ - Behold the Lamb of God; Behold the Good News of Jesus Christ.”

MYTH # 1: A Divorced Person is Automatically Excommunicated from the Catholic Church The truth is that divorce itself does not affect or alter a person's status in the Catholic Church. Divorce is a function of the civil law and secular courts. Although it has been a widespread misconception for many years, it is a myth that a divorced Catholic is "excommunicated," that is, not able to receive the sacraments within the Church.

MYTH # 2: An Annulment Costs Thousands of Dollars The truth is that no Tribunal anywhere in the world asks for "thousands of dollars," although the fee requested for an annulment process does vary from one Tribunal to another. In the Diocese of Joliet, the requested fees range from fifty dollars to five hundred twenty-five dollars, depending on the type of case, this fee that the Petitioner pays is only about one-half of the Tribunal's actual cost for a case. It is a myth that the process costs thousands of dollars, and in fact, no one is ever turned away from a Tribunal because of their inability to pay a fee.

MYTH # 3: Only Catholic Marriages Need to be Annulled The truth is that every marriage is considered a promise for life, a promise until death. It makes no difference whether that promise was made in a Catholic ceremony or not. No one, no matter what their religious affiliation or membership, is considered free to contract another marriage if they were married previously. Every prior mar-riage must be investigated and annulled before a person can enter a new marriage in the Catholic Church. It is a myth that no annulment is required if a person wasn't married in a Catholic ceremony.

MYTH # 4: If an Annulment is Granted the Children will be Illegitimate The truth is that an ecclesiastical annulment is concerned only with the spouses, and not the children. An annul-ment has no effect at all on the legitimacy of children, or other arrangements regarding children, such as custody or support. These are all concerns of the civil law, and an ecclesiastical annulment has absolutely no effects under civil law. It is a myth that granting an annulment makes the children illegitimate. An Annulment deals not with legitimacy but with validity of the bond between spouses.

MYTH # 5: It Takes Three to Five Years to Get an Annulment The truth is that every annulment ease is different, and some processes are longer than others, but few cases ever take more than 18 months from start to finish. Decades ago, it did take several years, but today the longest process is usually finished in 9 to 18 months. Some types of cases can be finished in a month or even less. It is a myth that the typical marriage annulment takes three years or more to complete.

12 FALACIAS SOBRE ANULACIÓN DE MATRIMONIOS EN LA IGLESIA CATÓLICA

MYTH # 6: Anyone who Applies (and Waits Long Enough) Will Get an Annulment The truth is that Tribunals do give negative decisions. The burden of proving a case rests on the Petitioner, that is, the person who applies for an annulment. The Catholic Church presumes that every marriage is a valid union, and there must be sufficient grounds for declaring otherwise. The Tribunal will help the Petitioner to under-stand what's needed to develop a case, but if there isn't enough proof, the Tribunal will give a negative deci-sion. It is a myth that everyone who applies gets an annulment.

MYTH # 7: If Children were Born in the Marriage, It Can't be Annulled The truth is that the Catholic Church considers an openness to children to be a natural and essential part of sacra-mental marriage, but whether any children were actually born or not has no bearing on the possibility of an annul-ment. If children were born, it is important that both parents live up to their natural and legal obligations to their children. It is a myth, however, that a marriage can't be annulled if the marriage resulted in children.

MYTH # 8: The Ex-Spouse Has to Agree to an Annulment Or It Can't Be Granted The truth is that both spouses have equal rights in an annulment proceeding, but that doesn't mean that the Re-spondent—the ex-spouse of the person who starts the annulment process—has to agree to an annulment. The truth is that the Tribunal judges can grant an annulment even if the ex-spouse is adamantly opposed to the idea of an annulment. It is a myth that both spouses have to agree to an annulment.

MYTH # 9: An Annulment is Just "Catholic Divorce" The truth is that civil divorce and a church annulment are two vastly different things. A divorce is concerned with the legal realities of marriage only; an annulment is concerned with the religious and spiritual element—the sac-rament of marriage. A divorce focuses on the end of a marriage; an annulment looks at the beginning, the very moment the couple said "I do." A divorce looks at marriage in civil law; an annulment looks at marriage from the perspective of the Gospel and of Church doctrine. It is a myth that an annulment is "Divorce, Catholic style."

MYTH # 10: An Annulment Means The Marriage Never Took Place The truth is that an annulment can't erase history, and doesn't try to. An annulment in the Catholic Church deals only with the sacrament of marriage, and not the legal, historical, emotional truth of marriage. An annulment states that the sacrament was never present in the marriage, and not that the marriage never took place. It is a myth that an annulment means that the marriage never happened.

MYTH # 11: The Tribunal is Like a Courtroom, With Judges, Witnesses, Lawyers, & Cross-Examinations The truth is that the Tribunal is a Court of Law for the Church, but it is very different from a civil courtroom. Depending on the type of case, the spouses may have Advocates, and there will be 1 to 3 judges, but most of the work is done in writing, and there is never an emotional courtroom scene as in television dramas. If a per-son appears in person to offer testimony, it is usually done in a private interview, and never with "cross-examination!" It is a myth that the Tribunal is like a TV courtroom.

MYTH # 12: The Idea of An Annulment Is Pure Localism in the Catholic Church The truth is that an annulment is "packaged" in a legal environment, since that is the best way to protect the rights and interests of everyone involved, but it is far more than a "legalistic process." People who've gone through an annulment have found peace and insight into themselves and their marriages. It is a myth that the only concern of the Church in an annulment is legalism, but through the Tribunal process the Church invites you to find healing, forgiveness, and new joy.

Join in and sing with the St. John’s Children’s Christmas Choir, 2012. All children between the ages of 7-14 are invited to sing at the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass. Practice has already started but you are still welcome to join! Contact Mrs. Rose at 630-668-0918 for practice times.

Liturgy of the Word for Children, “Gather the Children,” 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass Were you curious about Gather the Chil-dren? Wondering what age group the liturgy is geared? Questioning whether you should you go with your child? Here are some answers!

Children between the school ages of kindergarten and fifth grade are called forth by the presider at the beginning of Mass, then blessed. They follow the Minister of the Word to the chapel, where they sing and hear the reading in age appropriate language. The children re-turn to the church for the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Parents are always welcome, but do not have to go with their kinder-gartners through fifth graders. Preschoolers are welcome, too, but they must be accompanied by a parent.

Questions? You can contact Kara Ladd, Director, Gather the Children, 630-876-4534 (call or text), [email protected]

WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR TO DONATE, YOU “AUTO THINK”…SVDP! When you hear those radio ads encouraging the donation of your used car, please keep in mind that your car will most likely NOT be given to someone who can use it. Such cars are usually sold at auction or dis-mantled for the resale of their parts. That may serve the profit-purposes of a charitable organization. Yet it’s not very practical for people who have serious transportation needs, but can’t afford to buy a car. On the other hand, when you donate your car to St. Vincent de Paul, once we have determined that it is safe and functional, we put it directly into the hands of a needy person or family, so it can be used…to drive to work, to go on family errands, or to meet the many other practical needs for getting around. We have no paper-work complications. And we have no large management salaries or administrative costs to pay. We simply serve the needy. So when you’re ready to surrender your car, keep St. Vincent de Paul first on your list of options. Call 630-293-9755.

Keep St. John the Baptist Parish in mind when doing

your estate planning.

Cub Scout Pack 575

Boy Scout

Cub Scout Pack 575, Boy Scout Troop 575, the Knights of Columbus and the Society of St. Vin-cent de Paul will be collecting nonperishable items to supply St. John the Baptist Church’s food

pantry. Any spare food items taking up space in your cabinets will be welcomed.

Just place your donations in a bag outside your front door by 12:00 noon on Sunday, November 4th. The scouts and their leaders will be by to pick up the bags. Our ability to pick up donations is limited to Winfield. Or feel free to drop off donations on Sunday between 1:00 pm and 4:00

pm at St. John the Baptist Church parking lot at 0S233 Church Street in Winfield.

Our goal is to collect 8,000 pounds of items.

The proceeds of this collection benefit the needy in our community.

Thank you for your support!

Ultra Foods Ultra Foods is inviting our parish to take part in Ultra’s Smart Shopper Program, an Educational Rebate Program that generates cash back to our school for educational needs. It’s easy! Shop our local Ultra Food store from September 27, 2012 through January 27, 2013. Save your register receipts and drop them in the spe-cially marked depository box located in the narthex or the school office. At the end of the program, our school will receive a check for 5% of that total back to our school. Be an Ultra Smart Shopper. . . It’s a great way to save money and earn extra dollars towards education.

CATHOLICS FOR LIFE

"Every voice matters in the public forum. Every vote counts. Every act of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant individual power." (Gospel of Life, 34, Pope John Paul II)

"The founders of our country declared that each human being has certain inalienable rights that government must pro-tect. It is no accident that they named life before liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Life itself is a basic human good, the condition for enjoying all other goods on this earth. Therefore the right to life is the most basic human right. Our val-ued rights--the right to vote, to freedom of speech, or to equal protection under law--lose their foundation if life itself can be destroyed with impunity." (USCCB, "To Live Each Day with Dignity: A Statement on Physician-Assisted Suicide)

Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizens If the current definition of “religious employer” proposed by the federal Department of Health Services is allowed to stand, it could spread throughout federal and state law, diminish Catholic ministries throughout the nation, and most importantly, weaken a foundational respect for religious freedom and diversity that has stood since 1776.
