Session 11: Understanding MaterialsPerformance: How to Save Your Mill Millions of DollarsMonday, November 6, 2006 • 1:30 - 3:00 pmThe cost of corrosion to the US pulp and paper industry was recently estimated to $6 billion annually. Many ofthe corrosion problems, and their associated cost, can becontrolled by the application of existing knowledge. In thispanel discussion, the sub-committees of TAPPI’s Corrosionand Materials Engineering Committee will review their keytechnical contributions, discuss the wealth of material availableto help them control corrosion in the pulp and paper industryand consider future challenges.

Eucalyptus WorkshopSession 1: Sunday, November 58:00 am - 12:30 pmLearn the ins and outs of Eucalyptus in thisfour-part tutorial. Part 1: Plantation Forestrywith Eucalyptus, led by Celso Foelkel, willexplore how Eucalyptus plantations inSouth America are world leaders in forestgrowth. A description of the steps thathave been taken to develop these fast-yieldplantation forests will be discussed. Part 2:Eucalyptus Wood Characteristics, Pulpingand Bleaching, led by José Lívio Gomide, will cover Eucalyptus wood characteristicsand how these can affect pulping, papermanufacture and bleaching. Part 3:Environmental Issues Related to the Pulpand Paper Production with Eucalyptus, ledby Celso Foelkel, will explore eco-efficiencyin Brazil and will include case studies inwastewater, air and solid residuetreatments. Part 4: Criteria to EstablishEucalyptus Wood Quality for Pulping, ledby José Lívio Gomide, will cover thetechnological quality of the latest generationof Eucalyptus clones used by the majorBrazilian bleached kraft pulp mills.

Bleach Plant WorkshopSession 2: Sunday, November 58:00 am - 4:00 pmThis one day workshop will provide partic-ipants with a broad, basic understanding ofkraft pulp bleaching technology. Led byTom McDonough, IPST (ret.), participantswill hear directly from the leading expertson bleaching technology, including RichardBerry of Paprican and Doug Pryke of theAlliance for Environmental Technology. Theworkshop is designed for bleach plantoperators or engineers; paper companyenvironmental engineers; research, technical sales, and service personnel frompaper companies, chemical suppliers orequipment suppliers. Achieve a basicunderstanding of pulp bleachingtechnology and its implications for pulpproperties and environmental management.Enjoy the opportunity to discuss bleachplant operating problems with experts inthe field, and walk away from the workshopwith information and materials to help youon your job immediately.

Process Simulation/Engineering Valves Design Tutorial WorkshopSession 3: Sunday, November 51:00 - 5:00 pmLearn how to select an appropriate controlvalve for a particular application, and whatneeds to be considered in selecting thestyle of valve to be used, along with specialconsiderations for applying valves in liquidand gas service. The course includescoverage of solving problems associatedwith high noise levels and the potential forcavitation damage. Methods for selectinga valve that will provide the best quality ofcontrol based on an analysis of the valve’sinstalled gain are presented, along with theproper method of determining the pressuredrop to be used in the valve sizingcalculation.

Recycling WorkshopSession 4: Sunday, November 52:00 - 5:00 pmLead by Bill Moore of Moore & Associatesin Atlanta, this comprehensive workshopwill cover a wide range of topics in theworldwide, US, and Canadian recoveredpaper markets for all the major gradegroups. Some of the areas covered in thepresentation include: Worldwide OCC,ONP, Mixed Paper, Office Papers supplyand demand balance; characterization ofUS domestic mill demand and procurementpractices; status US collection activities; theAsian export market, its effect on the USmarket and offshore buying characteristics;and yield and quality issues.

Pre-Conference WorkshopsSunday, November 5, 2006A supplemental pre-registration fee of $50 for each workshop is required. In order toattend these workshops, you must be registered for the Engineering, Pulping, andEnvironmental Conference. See the registration form for more information.
