AbOut the COnduCtOrJames Villani, Music Director

James Villani has been the conductor and music director of the Symphony since 2004. As a long-time strong advocate for continuing adult music education and volunteerism in the arts, Mr. Villani has been involved in community musical organizations since coming to Northern Virginia in 1986. He was associate conductor and clarinetist for the Reston Chamber Orchestra for 10 years, and has been involved with countless other area performances. He is an active judge and clinician for local music festivals and competitions. He is a member of the

League of American Orchestras and the Conductors Guild. Mr. Villani was a semi-finalist for The American Prize for Community Orchestra Conductors in 2010.

A native of New Castle, Pennsylvania, Mr. Villani began playing clarinet in school at the age of 8. He honed his skills, as many in town did, in the back room of Al Colella’s Shoe Store, where Mr. Colella taught a steady stream of clarinetists for decades while servicing the occasional shoe customer. Later, while in high school, Mr. Villani studied with Carl Marks, a noted faculty member at Duquesne University and Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music. Mr. Marks was himself a student of the legendary Daniel Bonade.

Mr. Villani received Bachelor’s Degrees in Clarinet Performance and Music Education from Penn State University, where he studied with Smith Toulson and was a member of every major ensemble, from the marching Blue Band to the Symphony Orchestra. Among his PSU highlights were four major bowl games, playing tenor saxophone in Disney’s All-American College Marching Band at the grand opening of the EPCOT theme park, and performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas.

He received a Master of Music in Conducting from Northwestern University, where he studied conducting with John P. Paynter and was a graduate assistant for the university wind ensembles. He had a rather unique opportunity for a conducting major -- playing bass clarinet in the top wind ensemble alongside classmates who are now members of top symphony orchestras, including the principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. Mr. Villani was also a student of Clark Brody, principal clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Reiner, and Alan Stout, a renowned contemporary composer.

Mr. Villani taught in the public schools of Chalfont, PA; East Palestine, Ohio; and at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas. Mr. Villani is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Northern Virginia Community College.

Serenades .................................................................................. J. Scott McKenzie(Born in 1971)

J. Scott McKenzie, a composer, arranger and conductor, writes and arranges music mostly for bands and wind ensembles, although Serenades was con-ceived for strings alone.

McKenzie holds a BA from Virginia Tech and an MA in composition from George Mason University where he was a student of Dr. Glenn Smith and Mark Camphouse. He previously studied music education and conducting at Old Do-minion University and the Peabody Conservatory. Prior to enlisting in the Army, he taught band, chorus, and general music at the middle school level.

Serenades for string orchestra was premiered by The United States Army Strings of The U.S. Army Band on October 26, 2014 at Fairfax United Methodist Church, Fairfax, VA, First Lieutenant Silas Nathaniel Huff, conducting. It has five movements: Suzan’s Gigue; Colleen’s Waltz; Karen and Rebecca’s Tango; Allie’s Lullaby; and Anne’s Hoedown.

McKenzie wrote the following about Serenades: “When I was assigned to The United States Army Band, I often heard the rehearsals of The U.S. Army Strings emanating from the studio down the hall. What a wonderful sound it was, and not at all conductive to getting work done–all I’d want to do is stop whatever I was doing and listen to the music.

“My primary instrument in school was saxophone, so I often joke no one would let me play in the orchestra let alone write for it! I’d composed for years without an opportunity to write for the soothing, lush sound of the strings, and I knew I’d have to take advantage of it while I was assigned to The U.S. Army Band.

“The most important performances by The Army Strings are State dinners and other official government functions. They will literally serenade the senior civilian and military leaders of the U.S. by strolling around the room, usually during coffee and dessert. It’s a wonderful way to demonstrate professional-ism and respect to honored guests. The title of my work, ‘Serenades,’ is both a nod to what the Army Strings do for our country, but also a tip of my hat to the famous string serenades of Tchaikovsky and Dvorak (which I studied during the composition of these movements).

“As I composed this piece, it occurred to me that I was writing music that suited the personalities of the women of my life, so I dedicated the five movements appropriately. I had always envisioned the first melodic idea for ‘Suzan’s Gigue’ as a piano piece, so it is dedicated to my mom, Suzan. My daughter Colleen, a ballerina, gets a Tchaikovsky-esque waltz. My sisters, Karen and Rebecca, would sometimes get silly around each other, and I picture them doing a mock tango during the third movement. My other daughter Allie was just a baby while I was composing this piece, so she gets a lullaby. Finally, my wife is a fan of coun-try music (and jokes that she’s a ‘country bumpkin’), so the hoedown is for her.”

Rhapsody in Blue.........................................................................George Gershwin

(Born September 26, 1898, in Brooklyn, New York; Died July 11, 1937, in Hollywood, California)

Rhapsody in Blue remains an important monument in the history of American music as well as George Gershwin’s first major achievement in which he com-bined jazz and classical music in an extended composition. The composer’s great natural melodic gifts had already made him famous as a writer of popular songs, but he had not yet succeeded with larger musical forms and was just learning how they worked and what held them together.

Paul Whiteman’s Aeolian Hall concert on February 12, 1924 was an “Experi-ment in Modern Music” that launched George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Whiteman, who regularly led a popular band famous for jazz renditions, had played in major symphony orchestras, but made his reputation with an early version of the “big band sound,” popular in the 1930’s. He asked Gershwin to contribute a “serious” piano composition for this unusual formal concert in which his popular band was to perform. Whiteman knew Gershwin’s songs, and Gershwin ultimately felt flattered by Whiteman’s invitation to write and play a piece for piano and jazz band. Initially Gershwin had believed the proj-ect to be a prank and dismissed Whiteman’s proposal until an announcement in the New York Tribune stated that a Gershwin jazz concerto would be de-buted at the concert. Gershwin began work on January 7, 1924 for the Febru-ary 12th concert, and in a very short time, he composed a piano version of Rhapsody in Blue and Whiteman’s arranger, Ferde Grofé, who later wrote the Grand Canyon Suite, developed the orchestration. “There had been so much chatter about the limitations of jazz,” Gershwin said later, “not to speak of the manifest misunderstandings of its function [that] I resolved to kill that miscon-ception with one sturdy blow. I set to work with no set plan, no structure to which my music would conform. The Rhapsody began as a purpose, not a plan. I worked out a few themes and tried to conceive the composition as a whole. I hear it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America.” The occasion marked Gershwin’s first appearance as a concert pianist performing his own work.

Whiteman promoted the concert brilliantly and attracted an overflow audi-ence that included many musicians: Kreisler, Rachmaninoff, Stokowski, Heifetz and Sousa. What qualified as “experimental” about this event was the concert itself and the idea of legitimizing the American popular musical idiom. The audience’s reaction to Rhapsody in Blue was electric: at the work’s end, people stood and clapped and cheered; Gershwin had conquered a new world.

Gershwin often performed Rhapsody in Blue as a piano solo. For the first con-cert occasion though, his performance resembled those fabled performances of Mozart’s: Gershwin had left huge sections of the solo piano part blank with the instruction that he would nod to conductor Whiteman when it came time to bring in the orchestra. Gershwin improvised or reconstructed from memory the solo passages and wrote them on paper only after the premiere, when he had more time to concentrate on finalizing the composition.

Page 16: NOVEMBER 7, 2015 HYLTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTER …is playing George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Pianist Anthony Michael Cornet is establishing a reputa on as an emerging ar st with

Rhapsody in Blue is a succession of melodies rather than an organic whole, a work in which, as in the music of Liszt and Tchaikovsky, slight variation may take the place of true development. The striking quality of the melodies Gershwin assembled, the vitality of the piece’s rhythms and the force and the strength of the creative energy that the young composer put into creating Rhapsody in Blue, have given it a long and vigorous life. Today it is much loved for its evoca-tive nature and for its apotheosis of the American spirit.

Eternal Father, Strong to Save ........................................................Claude T. Smith(Born March 14, 1932 in Monroe City, MO;

Died December 13, 1987 in Kansas City, MO)

Claude Smith composed instrumental and choral music, completing over 110 band works, 12 orchestral works and 15 choral works; he composed solos for such artists as “Doc” Severinsen, Dale Underwood, Brian Bowman, Warren Covington, Gary Foster, Rich Matteson and Steve Seward.

He received his undergraduate training at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri and at the University of Kansas. Smith taught instrumental music in the public schools of Nebraska and Missouri. He also served as a member of the faculty of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, where he taught composition and theory and conducted the University Symphony Orchestra. Smith received numerous prestigious commissions including works for the U. S. Air Force Band, the “President’s Own” U. S. Marine Band, the U. S. Navy Band and the Army Field Band. His composition “Flight” was adapted as the “official March” of the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institute.

The hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save is the official hymn of the United States Navy. This treatment was Claude T. Smith’s first composition written specifically for and performed by a United States military band. It was also a significant turning point in Smith’s career as a composer as he met Dale Underwood, a saxophonist in the U. S. Navy Band, while the Navy Band was on tour and their friendship developed into a lasting relationship that would have important musical consequences. In 1975, Underwood suggested to the Navy Band that Smith would write an original work for the Navy Band’s 50th Anniversary Concert using the Navy hymn. Smith agreed, knowing that there were no funds to help with expenses, but he realized that this exposure could be very valuable for him.

Eternal Father, Strong to Save was premiered on March 4, 1975 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D. C. with Commander N. E. Muffley conducting. Based on the missionary hymn of the same name, composed in 1860 by William Whiting, Eternal Father, Strong to Save is distin-guished by its rich harmonies. It begins with a brilliant fanfare. The melody

Page 17: NOVEMBER 7, 2015 HYLTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTER …is playing George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Pianist Anthony Michael Cornet is establishing a reputa on as an emerging ar st with

of the hymn appears in a fugue. The finale is reminiscent of the introductory fanfare.

Tonight’s orchestral premiere was commissioned by the Manassas Symphony and orchestrated by Music Director James Villani.

Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo ................................................... Aaron Copland

(Born November 14, 1900 in Brooklyn, New York;Died December 2, 1990 in North Tarrytown, New York)

In 1942, Copland composed Rodeo, the second of his three popular ballets on American subjects, to a commission from Agnes de Mille, who wrote him in early that year asking that he compose a score for a “cowboy ballet” that she wanted to choreograph for the Ballets Russe de Monte Carlo, (the former Diagilev Ballet) which had been relocated to New York due to World War II. Subtitled “The Courting at Burnt Ranch,” the original title that Copland gave to the composition, Rodeo details the story of a young cowgirl who desperately attempts to find herself a man. She finally succeeds in making the desired impression on the head cowhand when she appears at a hoedown in a fetching red dress.

The ballet Rodeo tells its simple story with warmth and humor. Its premiere on October 16, 1942, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York was a large success, and Copland soon produced a four-movement suite from the ballet, which the Boston Pops Orchestra premiered in May 1943.

Copland quoted folk songs in this work in order to create a feel of time and place of the setting. He also used cowboy songs, fiddle melodies, railroad songs and a Scottish dance song. In “Buckaroo Holiday” he quotes “Sis Joe” and “If He’d be a Buckaroo;” the second movement, “Corral Nocturne” has no borrowed tunes; the slow tempoed third movement “Saturday Night Waltz” begins with the sound of country fiddlers tuning up, then goes on with a dance-like almost-quotation of “Goodbye, old Paint.” (or “I Ride an Old Paint”). The fi-nale, Hoe Down” is based on “Bonyparte,” and it also briefly quotes “McLeod’s Reel” as well as “Gilderoy” and “Tip Toe, Pretty Betty Martin,” all tunes Copland found in Traditional Music by Ira Ford. Most of these songs appear whole and in generally traditional settings; Copland also composed some original music in folk style, making it hard for the listener to know which is the original material and which not. Even though he incorporates folk-type music, the piece defi-nitely displays Copland’s musical personality and his brilliant orchestration.

The concert work Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo actually includes all but about five minutes of the full ballet. The score calls for three flutes (second and third doubling piccolo), two oboes and English horn, two clarinets and bass clarinet, two bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones and tuba, timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, cymbals, wood block, snare drum, slapstick, bass drum, triangle, celesta, piano, harp, and strings.

Contributions from our donors provide us with funding to invite regional composers to create compositions for our performances. We feature soloists from the local community, including our universities, and around the country. Your contributions also help fund music purchases and rentals of the classic pieces that you hear tonight and allow us to provide free tickets to children and students. Through your support, we are able to bring quality music to our community. We ask you to join our many donors by making a gift to the Manassas Symphony.

Learn more about contributing to the Manassas Symphony Orchestra and visit us in the lobby at intermission.

To make a contribution fill out the enclosed form, call 703-853-0749 or visit www.ManassasSymphony.org
