Antibiotics overprescribed for children: study Pediatricians in the United States write more than 10 million unnec-essary antibiotic prescriptions every year for conditions such as the flu and asthma, contributing to potentially dangerous drug resistance, a study said. Researchers looked at a nationally representative sample of almost 65,000 outpatient visits by children under 18 during 2006 to 2008, with findings reported in the journal Pediatrics. In total, doctors prescribed an antibiotic at one in every five visits, with most dispensed for children with respiratory ailments such as sinus infections and pneumonia. Some of those infections were caused by bacteria, warranting anti-biotics. But almost one-quarter of all antibiotic prescriptions were given to children with respiratory conditions that probably or definitely do not call for antibiotics, such as bronchitis, the flu, asthma and allergies. That translates to more than 10 million antibiotic prescriptions each year that likely won't do any good but might do harm, said study leader Adam Hersh of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. "One reason overuse occurs is because the diagnosis is often unclear -- this is common with ear infections. The decision is made to prescribe an antibiotic even though the diagnosis isn't certain, just to be on the safe side," he said. Half of all the antibiotics prescribed were "broad-spectrum" drugs, which act against a wide range of bacteria -- killing more of the good bacteria in the bodies as well and perhaps setting the child up for more serious infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria later on. "Antibiotics are wonderful. There are times when you really need them, the question is just being judicious about when we use them," said Betsy Foxman, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, who was not involved in the research. In addition, giving antibiotics to children when they aren't needed raises the risk of antibiotic-resistant infections in both the children themselves and society as a whole, she said. "We think of antibiotics as being wholly beneficial, but they are not very specific, they hit everything in your body. By making our microbes that are supposed to be with us disappear, we can be causing other health problems we don't know about." And to avoid over-prescription? Hersh said that one way might simply be to wait several days and check the child again. "If the diagnosis is still a little unclear, ask if it would be safe to wait a day or two with close follow up rather than starting the antibiotic right away," he added.

Grant amounts vary and will be provided only while HEAP funding remains available. Additional assistance may be available for those with a heating emergency. The maximum Regular HEAP grant for customers that use natural gas to heat their homes is $300. HEAP grants are immediately posted to customer accounts when they are received from New York State.

HEAPhelps.com // 1-877-443-2743

If you need help paying your heating bills, or know someone who does, the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) can help. Applications will be accepted beginning November 16. However, funds are very limited and will be distributed on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. Don’t delay, get your application ready. A little help can make a big difference. For more information, or to see if you qualify, visit HEAPhelps.com or call 1-877-443-2743.

Act now! This year, HEAP opens November 16.

Pursuant to Education Law §211(c), the Buffalo City School District (BCSD) is required to solicit comments from the community in connection with the 2011-2012 Contract for Excellence Plan.

The Contract for Excellence (C4E) is a requirement for districts receiving an increase in New York State aid for the 2011-2012 school year, and who have at least one school determined to be in need of improvement under the No Child Left Behind legislation. The contract requires that the new funds be spent in accordance with allowable programs.

• The continuing programs included in this year’s plan will address: * Class size reduction. The BCSD has increased the number of schools to receive funds to reduce class size from 11 to 33. * Programs for students with limited English proficiency. The ELL funding will be used to fund the aides and assistants who provide native language support to our students.• The new programs supported in the plan will address: * Buffalo Public Schools Alternative Instruction Program. In this program, stu-dents in elementary, middle and high schools grades, who are suspended, can remain current with their schoolwork in a supportive setting. * The Counseling Department. Funds will allow for a full-time counselor in each school.

• The BCSD is a high needs District as evidenced by our Extraordinary Needs percent of 85%, which includes poverty and ELL factors. As such, any program implemented will serve a large portion of the targeted students, as calculated by C4E. The C4E requires that 75% of the C4E funds support 50% of the schools with the greatest needs. The BCSD has more than met this requirement.

• The C4E ELL funds target schools with high ELL enrollments: #3, #6, #18, #19, #30, #33, #45, #76, #94, #95, #198, #204 and #205.

The BCSD invites the public to attend a hearing Tuesday, November 15th at 6:00p.m. The meeting will take place at EPIC, located at 1000 Main St., Buffalo. For those unable to attend the hearing, please email comments to [email protected] or mail to Superintendent’s Office, Attn: C4E, #712 City Hall, Buffalo, NY 14202
