MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD CHAIR Now is the time to make choices as to what we will be doing for the coming Fall/Winter seasons. Read the Seniors’ Scene magazine which is full of many activities which are suitable for this time of the year. How about the great outdoor activity of snowshoeing? Have you ever walked among the trees when the snow is six foot deep? A sight to behold. If you have not signed up for an activity this is the time to do it!November 11 will soon be upon us—a day in our memory which

we will not forget. Please join us at the local Cenotaph where a wreath will be laid on behalf of the Seniors’ Activity Centre. We remember and care about all the people who made such great sacrifices and especially those who gave their lives for us. We will never forget.Have you checked out the new SAC’S on 21st Street? Christmas is just around the corner and you might want to check it out for Christmas ideas. It is the right place to start your Christmas shopping. I am told that shopping is hard on the feet. May I suggest that you have a cup of our specialized coffee with friends at our new Fireside Lounge? This new coffee shop is only a few short steps from SAC’S on 21st. You are welcome to have a cup of coffee and a delicious snack anytime. On behalf of the Advisory Board I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Elmer Pellerine Chair

… about the Ramblers, Walkers and Hikers!Did you know that the Ramblers aren’t the only energetic and enthusiastic exercisers at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre?Last August, a perceived need became apparent. A few of the Ramblers were looking for a more leisurely pace, so the Walkers Club was born! Every Monday morning, a group of 8 or 10 fit Walkers sets out from the Centre for a two-hour adventure. There is a very comfort-able ‘ebb and flow’ about the Walkers. You can join them as a ‘green’ novice walker and work your way up to the Hikers (via the Ramblers). The Hikers are a group of active, physically fit people. They hike for 4 to 5 hours on Tuesdays, year-round, no matter the weather. Then there are the Hikers-plus! Their hikes can take 8 to 9 hours, sometimes longer. Anyone planning a trip with the Hikers should make sure that they don’t make deadlines that they can’t keep. You must sign out and take responsibility for your actions. There is a schedule in the Centre.

WHY DO I HEAR BUT NOT UNDERSTAND?Did you know that 47% of adults age 60-79 have hearing loss?1

Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea, speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult.

A comprehensive hearing assessment will identify the challenges you face and what can be done to help improve both your hearing and your comprehension. It takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a referral from your doctor, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever.

Earlier this year our Centre was abuzz with 'youngun’uns' from three West Vancouver elementary schools. Over a period of several weeks approximately 80 students paid us a visit. The plan was to let them explore some of the programs we offer in a hands-on environment.

The two programs chosen for this event were the craft room and the woodworking shop. It soon became clear that the days when boys played with trucks and girls with dolls are long behind us. The boys tackled knitting with enthusiasm and the girls took to woodworking with great gusto. One young lady was so enamoured with the rotary sander that she almost had to be wrestled to the ground to let another youngster have a turn! Guess what will be on her wish list for Christmas?

The project in the work shop was to build bird houses. The shop volunteers had prepared the floor, back, front and roof etc., and the students job was to glue and nail the pieces together. As an added bonus they got to take their

handiwork home. One grade 5 student was so pleased with her accomplishment that she proudly painted it and it is now home to birds at the family cabin on Hornby Island.

The craft room was equally popular with all the students and they very quickly took to knitting scarves on oval and square frames and winding wool. They seemed to enjoy being introduced to the traditional art of crafting.

During the workshops the students not only learned about the skills at hand but were also able to interview their mentors peppering them with various questions about their work-ing lives, upbringing and families.

We often read that seniors and youngsters spending time together has many benefits, and it certainly appears to be true in this case.

Our volunteers were more than willing to share their experiences and the youngsters appeared genuinely interested. This was a win-win situation as the youngsters got a personal history lesson without having to look at a textbook and our volunteers were exposed to the three “E’s” of youth—energy, excitement and enthusiasm.

We often read that seniors and youngsters spending time together has many benefits and it certainly appears to be true in this case. As one of the teachers later said “having the students connect with the seniors was an invaluable experience. We look forward to reconnecting next year, thank you so much for having us.” — We couldn’t agree more!
