The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce this year’s ATHENA Recipient

Congratulations to this year’s ATHENA Award Recipient, Nisa Hensley. Nisa grew up in Shelby County and is a graduate of Southwestern High School. While in high school, Nisa was a majorette, winning awards for her twirling for Southwestern. The first time that her future husband, Dave, saw Nisa, she was twirling at a Southwestern Basketball game and she just happened to drop the baton. They officially met the summer after her senior year. They married in 1976. Dave is a Triton Central graduate and is retired from Indiana Kentucky Electric. Although they have no children, they have 8 appaloosa horses and trail ride in Brown County.

Nisa is a 1975 graduate of Ball State University with a degree in Home Economics. Upon graduation, Nisa’s first professional job was with the Purdue Co-op Extension Services. As an extension agent, she was the clothing and textiles supervisor over 10 counties. While in this position, Nisa had a local segment on WSVL radio called “Nisa’s Homemaker Hints.” She enjoyed being on the radio and was employed with the Purdue Co-op Extension Service for 3 years.

Nisa left Purdue Co-op Extension Services and began working for Duke Energy, then Public Service Indiana. Nisa was employed with Duke Energy during its change over from Public Service Indiana to PSI Energy, to Cinergy, and finally Duke Energy. During this time, she relocated her home 5 times to work in 10 different locations. She also has worked internationally, spending time in Johannesburg, South Africa, England and Greece. Nisa worked for Duke Energy for 32 years.

Nisa has been a very important part of the Shelbyville community for many years. Nisa has been involved in the Shelby County Development Corporation, Girls Inc., Shelby Senior Service, Zonta, the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, and Shelby County Community Aspirations. She is currently the board president for the Blue River Community Foundation and remains involved with many other local non-profit agencies.

Nisa has been a huge part of the Shelby County International Relations Committee since its inception almost 25 years ago. She was instrumental in the homestay program, placing families from Japan in homes here in Shelbyville. She has served as both past president and treasurer for the SCIRC and has visited Shelbyville’s sister city, Shizuoka City, five times.

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is very proud to honor Nisa Hensley as this year’s ATHENA award recipient. Please join us as we celebrate Nisa. The ATHENA Celebration will take place at Indiana Downs on November 14th. Call the Chamber at (317)398-6647 to reserve your ticket today!

The Chamber of Commerce is focusing the month of November on women in business and I am pleased to have been asked to contribute to this month’s edition of the Chamber Chatter. After more than 20 years as a volunteer for SCUFFY, I am slowly closing in on two years as the Executive Director, and I can truly say, these are some of the best times of my professional career. In thinking about my perspective as a “women in business”, I realized that of the 6 Executive Directors in SCUFFY’s 58 year history, five have been women. In my association with other United Funds and United Ways throughout Indiana, it also seems that there are more women at the helm than men. Does that mean women are better qualified to this job? Not likely. The male Executive Directors I have met are more than qualified and capable.

So why do we find more women in this arena? When I look at the thirteen agencies that make up our SCUFFY family, seven of them are headed up by women, the almost obvious exceptions being the Boy Scouts, the Boys Club and the USO. When I talk to my husband about something going on within the SCUFFY world, his answers seem quite obvious, cut and dry, and dare I say, left brained. I often joke with him that it’s a good thing he doesn’t have my job because he likely wouldn’t last long. As an engineer and a scientist, Curtis’ analytical and systematic qualities serve him well in the job he does, and one that I could never master. However, our nonprofit world is not always as black and white, not always as easily dissected and sometimes we have to allow our passion and compassion to balance what seem to be the obvious decisions.

Another quality that serves us well in this type of a job is the ability to multi task and the ability to change gears at a moment’s notice. If you asked any of our agencies’ directors, they would likely agree that there is rarely a day in the office when things go as planned. I do believe that as women we are natural “multi taskers”, juggling work, kids, car pools and extracurricular activities for the entire family. It is what we do daily, and though we all have our “Calgon take me away” moments, we love the challenge and actually embrace this part of our job.

When it comes to SCUFFY, I have close to twenty five years of passion, and I can truly say that this is not just my job, this is my vocation. I love the ability to work daily with our SCUFFY agencies and many other community partners and leaders on initiatives to make our community the best place possible. As to the question whether women are better suited at the helm of a nonprofit, well that might best be left as a project for some college student’s research paper. But speaking for this women, I am blessed to be the one occupying this chair. To contact Angie, call (317) 398-6231.

Erase everything you have ever learned about nursing homes, and join me on a journey to an amazing place. Waldron Health and Rehab Center is nestled between corn fields and the small town of Waldron. Recently voted Best of Best in 2012 as a provider for long term care and short term rehab services in Shelby County, this facility is easy to find and hard to forget.

Waldron Home was started in 1966, by Charles and Kathleen Kuhn. It was originally located in a two story building close to the edge of town and in 1977, the existing facility was built. Additional long-term and residential beds which remain in operation today were added in 1984 as the needs of the community increased. The Kuhn family continued to operate The Waldron Home until 2007, when it was purchased by Covenant Care, Inc, a small corporation with a big heart.

Waldron is not only a great place to heal. It is also a great place to work. Our dedicated staff has a combination of over 500 years of experience in the facility. It is with great pride and appreciation that we recognized Tina Smith, Activity Director and Cindy Trolinder, ADON for 35 years of dedicated service to our community on October 30.

Waldron specializes in short term rehab services, and

Longevity Key at Waldron Health and Rehab

has proudly returned over 100 residents to their prior level of living in 2012. We take great pride in “Getting you well and getting you home.” We also cater to the long-term care needs of those in our community, and are pleased and proud to be able to accept Medicare, Medicaid, Medicaid Pending, Private Pay and many individual insurance policies to cover the expenses of our aging population. Many changes have taken place over the recent years.

Last year, a $3M renovation took place that modernized an already amazing facility. A state of the art rehab gym was added to meet

the changing needs of the community population. Some are surprised to find that the fence of 20 years has been taken down. Modern technology has allowed us the luxury of keeping our residents safe without the fence. An unobscured view of Waldron from inside and out only enhances our beauty.

Waldron Health and Rehab is a great place to live, to recover and to work. We hope that you will take the 10-minute drive from Shelbyville to see who we are and what we do. “We are family serving families”. To contact Waldron Health and Rehab, call (765)525-4371. Shelbyville native business woman, Theresa Adams is the owner/operator of Renew Body & Spirit, LLC at 2404 East State Road 44. Renew Body and Spirit is dedicated in creating wellness for the body, mind and spirit by offering massage, reflexology, craniosacral, homeopathic testing, Bach Flower remedy, facials, body wraps, lypossage© and foot detox baths. She also enjoys talking with groups on self-help ideas for a healthy life. Currently there are four female licensed therapists, two certified Reflexologists, and a Reiki Master on staff to provide body work that will supplement your body for a healthy lifestyle. When Theresa isn’t working, she is pursuing a degree in naturopathy and an avid volunteer for the community, county and state. She inspired and co-chairs the annual Bras for the Cause event. Decorated bras are the guest of honor at a fun filled event to raise monies to help support a quality of life fund for Shelby County residents with cancer. The next Bras for the Cause will be held February 23, 2013. Theresa is the current state president of the Business and Professional Women. The INFBPW organization mission is to promote and support women personally, professionally and politically. Her favorite community event is the Reality Store©. INFBPW-Shelbyville will bring all Shelby County 7th graders together one day in April at the Shelbyville Middle School to pretend that they are 28 years old. The student chooses a career that reflects their grade point average. When they walk through the doors, they are paid for that career choice and then get to make choices during the hour. Taxes are withheld from their income that they choose, depending on family size, food, lodging, transportation, utilities, insurance, daycare, etc. It’s an eye opening exercise that the student learns that he/she is young enough to make study changes to better their life for tomorrow. Theresa is also an active Kiwanian. Kiwanis International is celebrating its 25th year of inviting women to join the global organization. Kiwanis is dedicated to serve the children of the world, one child, and one community at a time. The Shelbyville club is very active in the community. Her favorite activities with club members are helping Santa visit the community and help prepare meals and then serve and talk with families that are staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis.Theresa also is an active volunteer at her church and enjoys helping with programs at the Horizon Center and is working to create a Shelbyville League of Women Voters group. Amy Haacker on job as City Redevelopment Director

As the City Redevelopment Director, much of my work is project-based and can run the spectrum of community development, depending on the administration’s priorities and needs of the community. Recently I’ve had the fortune of working on one of the City’s newest initiatives: education and workforce development. We hear from Shelbyville industry that attracting and retaining good employees can be a challenge. New programs that attract innovation and talent, like the Rose-Hulman IMPaCT 2016 partnership, and educational initiatives like the Ivy Tech scholarships funded by the City Council and the welding certificates offered by the Blue River Career Center help match the skills to the opportunities that currently exist. I’ve had the humbling opportunity to interact with many CEO’s, presidents of colleges and universities, rising stars in state government, and all sorts of media, which has caused me to reflect on what makes a person marketable. During this time, I was also given the opportunity to speak to the Marketing and Entrepreneurship Class at the Blue River Career Center. I’m afraid that they didn’t know what they were getting when they asked me to talk about marketing! I walked to the front of the classroom and asked about their first impression of me. Would seeing me step out of my old minivan and drop the armful of papers in the parking lot, then have to run around collecting the scattered handouts (true events) change their perception of me? It got some chuckles, but the point is that impressions matter. The kids in the class all had aspirations of opening a business someday. But first, I wanted to talk to them about selling themselves. We do need to work to make sure our workforce is prepared with the technical training to meet the new challenges of advanced manufacturing. But a universal skill that never becomes outdated is the ability to communicate well. Good grammar, sentence structure, and organized thought on paper (or email ) still impress. Speaking with the same creates an impression of confidence. Smile and stand up straight, give a firm handshake; opportunities will be there. As we focus on technical skills and incorporate more distance learning, let’s not forget that strong communication skills are still important in making a person marketable. To contact Amy, call (317)398-6624.

Dentists Carrie Pumphrey and Betsy Crandall never imagined when they were establishing their practice that Blue River Dental would become a home to so many families. Located at the southeast corner of I-74 and State Road 9, Blue River Dental has welcomed a steady stream of satisfied patients since they opened their doors in 2001. Since Dr. Crandall joined the practice in 2007, the practice has doubled the number of patients who come in seeking preventive, restorative, and cosmetic services. Today, they offer CEREC crowns in one visit and digital X-rays that produce less radiation, among other technological advances. Thanks to their quality care, consistency in service, and renown for keeping up with technological advances, Drs. Pumphrey and Crandall, along with their acclaimed staff, offer care to Shelby County residents and the surrounding area—care that is defined by their family friendly approach and close-knit ties with their community. In recent years, the growth of this “extended family” of patients has been matched by the huge growth of their office family. The staff jokes that there must be something in the water at Blue River Dental, considering that seven babies have been delivered to five of the working moms in the office in the last four years, with one more expected this month. New moms themselves, Pumphrey and Crandall agreed that “the last few years have been challenging with juggling all the babies and maternity leaves and hormone swings, but we wouldn’t trade it for the world.” As a woman-run business with eight female team members, Blue River Dental stands as a unique example of the exciting possibilities for women in business in the medical field. Dr. Pumphrey observed, “I think as women we are natural caregivers and that allows us to approach

patient care with a unique perspective. I also like that we have the freedom to create our own environment. We have really tried to make our practice very welcoming and relaxing for our patients.”

Both women say they were drawn to the field of dentistry because of their interests in medicine and prior experience volunteering or shadowing dentists and medical professionals. Graduates of the Indiana University School of Dentistry, they are dedicated to helping patients live healthy lives, overcome disease, and have the smiles they want to project to the world. “Our entire team is passionate about dentistry, seeing their positions as careers, not just as ‘jobs.’

Everyone truly cares about our patients and strives to provide the quality dental care that our patients deserve,” Dr. Crandall says. “For me dentistry is challenging because every day there are new problems to solve,” Dr. Pumphrey added. “We like taking patients’ concerns and creating possibilities for them and making their dental care experience better than they anticipated.” The doctors also expressed that the flexible but demanding hours help their

rapidly-expanding team still spend time with their families, an important perk when it comes to balancing work and family. Blue River Dental believes that many of these same family values apply to their work in dentistry, especially honesty, teamwork, and trust. In discussing the science and the art of dentistry, Dr. Crandall remarked, “Our patients realize that dentistry has come a long way and that there are many new advances that make dental experiences much more comfortable. It is awesome to see a patient’s trust surface.” Dr. Pumphrey credits Blue River Dental’s entire staff for implementing a practice that “walks the walk” when it comes to their philosophy. “Our office truly functions as a team. I think Betsy and I have formed a great leadership

team, and the rest of the staff is so supportive to us and the mission of the office,” she said. Both doctors agreed that dentistry is a flexible and rewarding field for women, and are proud of their practice’s ability to overturn stereotypes about “insensitive” dentists. Dr. Crandall said, “As the families of Blue River Dental’s team members grow, we are also seeing our family of patients grow. We enjoy having families, children, and grandparents in our practice; we can relate to them.” Dr. Pumphrey shared, “I have celebrated with my patients during weddings and births, and cried with them during illness and loss. Those relationships have become

a big part of my life, and I’m grateful to get to do what I love around such great people.” Blue River Dental is located at 1818 N Riley Highway and serves children and adults, using state of the art technology to offer the most comfortable patient experiences. Appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8am-5pm and Wednesday 12pm-7pm.

Blue River Dental’s growing family includes (seated L to R) Dr. Betsy Crandall with son Oliver, dental assistant Amanda Gooding with sons Tyler and Kyle, Dr. Carrie Pumphrey with sons Luca and Alek. Standing L to R are dental hygienist Allison Crim with son Kellen, dental hygienist Jessica Staker with son Alex and expectant dental assistant Kristan Kuhn.
