The threshold of November brings anticipation of Thanksgiving & Family. Breaking bread and sharing time with people we love and care about create common experiences and foster affection and these are some of the ties that bind a family together. It is no different in our Lions Family. We break bread, we share common experiences as we raise funds and help people, and we grow in our affection for each other - FAMILY

Our Lions family has been busy this past month. As I visited with 10 clubs this past month, I saw clubs preparing for Holiday fundraisers, inducting new members, conducting blood drives and children’s vision screenings through Operation KidSight, Zone meetings, alleviating hunger through food pantry donations and 68 Hour children’s program, MD Secretary training and awarding scholarships – just a taste of what Lions did this past month.

37 New Lions swelled our ranks in October. Each new Lion increases our presence and deepens the roots of Lionism in our communities. This past month we celebrated the chartering of the Nashua Everest Centennial Lions Club on the 10th. A wonderful celebration of common purpose for our newest Lions Club. We are approx. 6 Lions closer to opening a new Lions Club in Pelham. If you know someone that lives or works in Pelham, please introduce them to us. Operation KidSight continues to make an impact in communities across the state. A report at the Mid-Winter Convention will detail our progress for this most important Lions program. The New England Lions Council held their annual Melvin Jones Banquet and Necrology Services. I was proud to stand with 44-N District Governor Henry McKee as we recognized Lions that have passed away since last years’ service.

Hello fellow Lions:

Leadership in action.

I had the opportunity to sit and enjoy a Zone meeting for Zone 2. Every club in the zone attended with at least 2 people. They had a round table discussion talking about what is going on with their clubs. The excitement and energy was very contagious. What impressed me the most was the fact that the group was full of first time officers. This was exciting because these folks are the future of our district and of Lions.

They all shared ideas and asked many questions. These group sessions are great tools and so informative. I heard more than once “ we should try that” followed by “give me a call and I will be more than happy to help”. I was so energized when I left that meeting and so where they.

Keep up the good work Zone Chair’s. Your hard work will pay dividend to the future of our District!

Hello fellow Lions,

I have contacted Zone chairs about setting up/scheduling their Zone meetings for the year. The intent of having Zone meeting schedules in advance was to facilitate Lions attending Zone meetings. I am hoping club members will try to attend a Zone meeting. This helps promote Lions getting involved and becoming

leaders. Thanks! For this month’s news on Leadership here is some info for you to review. The Centennial Celebration is bringing Lions around the world together to celebrate our 100th anniversary. Here are three great ways that you and your club can join the celebration this year and throughout the Centennial Celebration:

Lead through Service by hosting at least one Centennial Service Challenge project in each of our service areas of youth, vision, hunger and the environment. Be sure to report your Centennial projects on MyLCI to earn a banner patch for each year that your club participates.

Lead by Inviting for Impact by setting a club goal of inviting at least 3 new members to join your club. You and your club can earn limited-edition awards in the Centennial Celebration Membership Awards for inviting new members and helping to sponsor a new club.

Lead with Connecting with your Community by planning a Centennial Community Legacy Project. Celebrate 100 years of Lions by identifying a special project that will make a lasting impact in your community. Look forward to receiving more information about developing your own Legacy Project. If I can help in anyway please feel free to call on me.

Yours in Lionism,

I would like to welcome the newly chartered Nashua Everest Centennial Lions Club to District 44-H. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. The next Cabinet Meeting will be here soon so please send in your reservations. The deadline is November 1st. It will be held on November 15th at the Pheasant Ridge Country Club in Gilford. Look for the registration form in the newsletter. Thank you to all of the clubs who have contacted us to schedule a visitation. There are still a number of clubs who we would like to hear from. Please contact me soon at [email protected] to schedule your club. We are still looking for dues payments from a few clubs. Please send in payment as soon as possible. My address is CST Middlemiss, 22 Abbott St., Hudson, NH 03051. If you would like to discuss a payment schedule please feel free to contact me, my cell phone is 603-566-7616. Thank you in advance. We still find that there are a number of clubs who have not been filing their Monthly Member-ship Reports or Activity Reports timely. These are important to International as well as DG Scott, the Vice Governors and myself, to gauge the health of the clubs as well as the District. Secretaries, please make every effort to file these reports. Thank you. Yours in Lionism,

Greetings Fellow Lions,

Did you know the Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation of NH started in 1978 with contributions from a few Lions who were passionate about helping others?

With the support of NH Lions continued fundraising efforts the endowment reached $500,000 approximately twenty years later and we began drawing from the funds to help provide eye glasses and hearing aids for people in need. In the early years 70% of requests were for eye glasses and 30% for hearing aids. Over the years the need has shifted and the majority of applications received today are for hearing aids. The cost of hearing aids is much greater than eye glasses so the Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation of NH needs your help more than ever. Each time your club makes a donation directly to the Sight & Hearing Foundation, or presents a Granite State Fellowship, or purchases a calendar raffle ticket from the Twin State Soccer Association you are making it possible for the NH Lions to provide important services and improve the quality of life for NH residents who truly need our assistance. I hope your club will participate in the annual “Parade of Checks” at the Mid-Winter Convention on Saturday January 30th 2016 and show your pride and support by presenting a donation to the Sight & Hearing Foundation of NH. I’ll talk about NH Lions Health Services, Operation Kid Sight, and Lions Youth Services in next month’s newsletter ~ please also remember them when making donations at the Mid-Winter Convention. Your friend in service,

Be a part of the Celebration! From now until June 2018 all Lions have the chance to join the Centennial Celebration! The Centennial Membership Awards recognize Lions who invite a new member or help organize a new club. Those Lions will automatically earn

Centennial Sponsor pins and certificates, but the recognition doesn't stop there. The longer the new member or new Lions club you sponsored stays active, the more you can earn through our progressive level awards. Lion clubs have the opportunity to earn awards too and it starts by inducting at least three new members this fiscal year! Check out the awards you can earn on the Centennial Membership Awards website. Start today! Asking one member to join your club is just the beginning, in order to maintain a healthy club it is vital that your members enjoy their experience as a Lion. The Membership Satisfaction Guide is a tool that can help you take steps to understand how to maintain a successful club. At the end of the guide there is a Member Questionnaire. Hand this out at your next club meeting to learn how your members feel with their experience. Take time to review the results and use the information to create a plan that will keep your members satisfied so you can continue to provide the best Lions experience.

Do you know what your Community Needs?

Have you done a Community Assessment?

Can Your Club Help Your Community with a NEW PROJECT?

Are Your Club Projects still needed by your Community?

LCI has available a Community Needs Assessment Questionnaire that can be sent to people in

your community such as Principles, the Park district coordinate, firefighters and others. Once this questionnaire is retuned to you, then your club can appoint a committee to review the assessment.

LCI has a step by step Guide to help you with developing a plan of action to make a

NEW COMMUNITY PROJECT Happen. Encourage non club individuals from the community to be part of this project and then “JUST ASK” and see your membership grow.

“Community Needs Assessment” and “Making It Happen” are available on Line, just go LCI.

A message from Lions Sight and Hearing President Fred Ple

At midwinter convention, January 30th, 2016, at the Courtyard Marriott in Nashua, Lions Sight and Hearing will have its annual meeting. You are all members of this organization by virtue of being a Lion. Each year, we elect two new members of the board from District 44H, and two from 44N, and that will be the case this year as well. Please consid-er running for this Board. Lions Sight and Hearing spent $50,000 last year on hearing aids, cataract surgeries and a couple of other medical cases involving sight and hearing. It does incredible amounts of good, and enables clubs to tackle projects of this nature that would otherwise be beyond the club’s means to do. The Board meetings are productive, and they are fun! In the morning during the Multiple Council meeting, we will give the highlights of our past year and opportunities for fund-raisers to help LS&H make its financing goals so we can do all this good work. This would be an appropriate time to bring your checks for a parade of checks for LS&H. In the afternoon, we will have an abbreviated LS&H annual meeting, at which the elections will take place, and we can handle more in-depth questions which time won’t allow during the morning sessions. See you at midwinter!

The Salem Lions Club has chosen to get more involved in the cleaning of our waterways in the Salem area.

Our club voted to donate $10,000 to the Clean River Project. These monies will be used to a working pontoon boat that the Salem Lions will

name.

The Boat will have the Lions Logo and will be working primarily in southern NH.

As more funding comes the boat will add additional clean ups along the Merrimack River.

This boat will be using a sonar scanner to locate cars, tires, and other debris.

Volunteers are needed. If you are interested in undertaking this project for your club contact Judy Del Valle-Webb at [email protected]

The Moultonborough Lions decided to join the celebration this year by conducting Spot Vision Screening at Inter-Lakes High School on Wednesday morning.

With the assistance of Nurse Jodi Pendexter and her Health Office Assistant Kim Durand, the Moultonborough Lions were able to conduct free state-of-the-art vision screening on 107 seventh and eighth graders.

Thanks to a matching grant of $53,000 from Lions Club International Foundation, 15 Spot Vision Scanners were purchased for Operation KidSight (OKS) by New Hampshire Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation. These scanners are being shared for vision screening between the 79 Lions Clubs in New Hampshire. The Spot Vision Scanner has state-of-the-art technology that can detect the following vision issues: near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia), unequal refractive power (anisometropia), blurred vision, eye structure problem (astigmatism) pupil size devi-ations (anisocoria), and eye misalignment (strabismus).

These scanners are 98% accurate and can be used on children as young as 6 months as well as on adults. In less than fifteen seconds the scanning is done and a summary printout is provided.

Lions World Sight Day raises awareness about the importance of eye health and it is nice to know that Lions around the world are conducting sight-related projects. The Moultonborough Lions feel the “Lions Pride” knowing they are doing their part in ‘improving sight’ and ‘preventing blindness.’ Lion Mark Cotrupi is coordinating the OKS program for the Moultonborough Lions and has been busy contacting local schools and daycares to coordinate screening dates. This FREE screening takes only seconds and it could make a big difference in your child’s life. Do not let your child miss out on this wonderful opportunity. If you would like the Moultonborough Lions to screen the children of your organization contact Mark Cotrupi at 476-5140.

Facebook is more than just getting the word out about you upcoming events or posting about what happened at those events. It’s also for

passing on information about Lions International and new breakthroughs in vision issues, Guide dogs, hearing programs and

other data. The idea is to like the page and then share it. When you share a district post it goes to all your friends. They find out what Lions in our district are doing as well as finding out about Lions in general. Some of us have the same friends and think that’s already

been shared so we don’t have to. I may not have all the same friends in New Hampshire that you do but I still share things on Facebook. By sharing I reach people all over the globe whom I have friended.

Check it out.

READING ACTION PROGRAM

To all clubs,

This is to re-introduce The Lions Club International Reading Action Program (RAP) Campaign.

Literacy -- the ability to read and write -- is the foundation for education and social development. Yet, hundreds of mil-lions of adults lack minimum literacy skills and millions of school-aged children are not attending school to obtain them. The Reading Action Program is a 10-year commitment to increasing reading and literacy rates. It’s a call to action for every Lions club So Lions, are you ready to expand our impact by jumping on board the Reading Action Program? There are many ways Lions can help in their respective communities. Consider the following: • Developing after school reading programs • Reading to children at local libraries • Contacting your local school and asking how you can help • Donating books and/or computers to your local school or library • Volunteering as tutors through a local school • Working with local literacy experts and agencies • Working to promote braille literacy Any club already doing the reading action program please let me know.

Please use the attached form for reporting any activity. I can be reached at [email protected] or by my cell phone 603-770-9396.

Sincerely,

Mario Izzo - Lions Youth Services Reading Action Program

Lions Crew at Work

Is your club interested in a new way to reach out to the community?  Lions Crew at Work is a program sponsored by Lions Club Interna onal.  It involves finding a need  in your community that requires a group of concerned people to spend a day or more making a posi ve change.   This might involve building a playground for a ba ered women's or homeless shelter, building shelves for a local food pantry, repairing a public park or playground, remodeling a community or senior center  or any one of countless other projects.

You start with finding a need and then outlining a plan to meet that need.  Seek out community support to donate skilled labor and materials.  Invite the community to par cipate in the “work par es” designed to accomplish your goal.  Publicize Lions during the event both by media cov‐erage and by simply wearing iden fying Lions logo a re.  This type of project benefits both the community and the local Lions club.  Those that help with the project and those who see or read about it are all poten al new members.

I know some clubs are already doing these types of projects.  The work projects at Camp Pride are a good example of a district‐wide Lions Crew at Work project.   Clubs that conduct projects  like Roadside Clean Ups or Tree Plan ngs are also par cipa ng  in the spirit of this  ini a ve.   Lions Crew at Work is a way to “Reach New Heights” by raising the bar on some of the projects we are already doing.  The informa on available at the LCI website will help give you ideas to increase the value your club gives and receives from these projects.  When you go to the website, click on “How We Serve”, then select “Community and Environment Programs”.  On that page, you will find a link for “Lions Crew at Work” that will bring you to a descrip on of the program and a list of available resources.  GLT Jerry Vaccaro also has resources available to help you survey your com‐munity to determine higher areas of need.

Remember, if you plan one of these projects, we want to hear about it.  Please contact me ([email protected]) and write a summary for our district newsle er.  Pictures are great, too.

We of the DogSight Project are celebrating 15 years of raising funds for Fidelco and spreading the word about guide dogs and Fidelco Guide Dogs in particular. We still offer “Travels with Ruby” even though Rose is the new dog, and topics can include the white cane, living with limited vision or Guide Dog facts. We would like to raise $15,000 this year to celebrate our 15th anniversary and we have some incentives for you to consider. Your club can designate a $250 donation to sponsor a guide dog harness, a $500 donation to sponsor a kennel at Fidelco for half a year or a $1000 donation to sponsor a kennel for an entire year. Your club’s name and town will appear on the harness or will be displayed outside the kennel. And, as before, any donation of $300 or more will receive a paw banner patch and a $1000 donation can be used for a Loyal Shepherd Fellowship rather than a kennel sponsorship. If you have any questions about these new sponsorships, just ask me!

Respectfully submitted, Linda Piekarski Chair, the DogSight Project [email protected]

Camp Pride Updates At our last board meeting we had a special dinner at the Atkinson Resort And Country Club. The purpose of this dinner was to present a brick to these Folks. All of them went above and beyond for camp Pride last year. The group were presented to be placed in our walk way in front of the administration building. I had the honor of introducing each of our guests and give a brief description of what they have done for Camp Pride. It was a memorable evening sharing the history of the camp and thanking them for all they did. The camp is officially closed for the season. With quite a bit of hard work all of the projects on our list have been completed. We just signed the contract to replace two foundations on cabins in dire need. That work will be started soon. I will update you all at our next cabinet meeting. Al Goldstein 1st VDG President Camp Pride 603-913-1281 [email protected]

Does your Club donate to LCIF, do YOU? For more than four decades, Lions Clubs International Foundation has relied on the generosity of individuals to carry out our humani-tarian work. Donations make possible our worldwide efforts to restore sight, provide disaster relief, support youth and address other humanitarian needs. Over the past decade LCIF Grants to our District have exceeded LCIF donations from individuals and Clubs within the District. To support these programs, there are four areas of giving from which to choose when making a contribution: Area of Greatest Need, Disaster, Sight and Youth. Donations within these four areas are eligible for Melvin Jones Fellowship recognition; donations beyond these areas will be honored by LCIF but will not be eligible for MJF recognition. When you give to the Foundation, you can be sure that your contribution is making a difference in the lives of people in need. It's easy to make a donation online, and there are several other ways to make a donation and contribute. Recognition programs for Lions pro-vide one way for us to honor the generous dedication Lions have to supporting LCIF. If your Club does not donate to LCIF please encourage them to do so. As individuals we can also give. For as little as $20.00 you can become a contributing Member. You can also set up a plan, either through your Club, or directly with LCIF to give on a regular basis. As your District LCIF Chairperson I am here to help in any way I can. If you have any questions or would like to donate, please con-tact me at PccBill.LCIF44H @yahoo.com Thank you.

HOLIDAYS FOOD DRIVE

Last year at the last minute I challenged all of the clubs to do a food drive in November to help support the Holidays. While it was a little last

minute, many clubs stepped up and got it done. I am once again challenging all of you to do it again.

There are many people in the state that are challenged every day to

provide themselves or their families for a nutritious meal. Anything we can do is a plus. Whether it is a true food drive or holiday baskets or

donations to your local food pantries, let’s see what we can do to make it a little better for our neighbors.

Let’s all share our successes in future newsletter!

Proud To serve With All Of You

The Lions Clubs International Centennial Celebration kicked off in July 2014 and ends in June 2018. Your club has the opportunity to earn a banner patch each year by serving those in four major categories.

They are: engaging our youth, sharing the vision, relieving the hunger and protecting our environment. Sound familiar? They should, as they are four of the categories of giving for the Lions Clubs International Foundation. Your club is already doing service projects in these areas, so all that is required is reporting to MyLCI. Don’t forget to add pictures! They could show up on Facebook, twitter or in the Lion magazine. Another way to participate is with inviting new members. Centennial membership awards are available. Be the first in your club to receive the Centennial Sponsor pin! Here’s a great recruiting tool – every new Lion benefits 23 people! 23 people! Let your prospective members know that and see how quickly they join. Take time to assess your community needs and plan a Centennial project that leaves a lasting impression. We, as Lions, need to let our communi-ties know all the good works we do and that we will continue to do them for the next 100 years. Plan a project today!
