Hello fellow Lions:

Just returned from the Lion’s Leadership Forum in Grand Rapids Michigan. What a great learning opportunity. We had 8 classes a day, for 3 days. We could pick from a choice of 10 different classes per session. That was 100 classes to choose from. Very few of the classes were given more than once. A few samples included, “Just Ask- Retention of members”,” Lions leaders Are made, Not Born” and “Hello, I’m Your New Member… I’m Leaving”. This is just a small snap shot of the over 100 classes available. The theme is to strengthen our membership and leadership. The thing to remember is that all of these classes or similar ones are available on the LCI website. This website is a great resource to make yourself a better Lion and your club a stronger club. Another great new thing offered by LCI is Lions University. This is being offered in a Bachelors De-gree, Masters Degree and in the very near future a Doctorate Degree. This is all done on line at your pace. I took three of these classes at the Forum and will be taking the tests soon. All of these are to help you be a better Lion.. Take a look, you will be surprised at all the things being offered.

I saw for the first time the Centennial pins that are going to be given to all new members and the spon-sors for the next 2 years. They are quite attractive. Sponsors will continue to receive an upgraded pin for the next 3 years if your sponsored member stays with your club.   For the past 3 years we have had positive growth. This is something to be proud of as it does not reflect the majority of Districts in the USA. Just Ask One! Proud To Serve With All Of you! Al Goldstein 1st VDG District 44H E: [email protected] H: 603-362-6529 C: 603-913-1281

Hello fellow Lions,

Following up on last month’s message about preparing a club budget, this will also serve as the basis for your clubs activity plan for the year. If you didn’t get to do this yet, I suggest clubs make the effort. You will be happy with your efforts, the results and realize the benefits.

For this month’s message, let’s address Zone and District meetings. These meetings provide an opportunity to learn about clubs in your zone, district and develop fellowships as well as an understanding about Lionism. It is mandatory for the club president and secretary to attend as they are the District Governors adversary committee. It is beneficial for the Membership chairman and other club members to attend to learn more about Lionism. Attending a few Zone and District meetings is a good way to begin to obtain knowledge about Lions and the district. These meetings are a great place to start to develop leadership knowledge and skills that will help you and your club. If I can help in anyway please feel free to call on me.

Yours in Lionism,

Sam Longbook 2nd VDG District 44H E: [email protected] H: 603-329-5603

DG Scott and I have begun our visitations. Thank you to all of the clubs who have contacted us to schedule a visit. There are still a number of clubs who we still need to hear from. Please contact me soon at [email protected] to schedule your club. We are still looking for dues payments from a few clubs. Please send in payment as soon as possible. My address is CST Middlemiss, 22 Abbott St., Hudson, NH 03051. Thank you in advance. On another note, we have discovered that there are a number of clubs who have not been filing their Monthly Membership Reports or Activity Reports timely. These are important to International as well as DG Scott, the Vice Governors and myself to gauge the health of the clubs as well as the District. Secretaries, so please make every effort to file these reports. Thank you. If you need to get in touch with me, my cell phone is 603-566-7616. Yours in Lionism,

Greetings Fellow Lions,

Thank you for making us the greatest service organization in the world ~ Lions Clubs International. Thank you for your faithful service, your enthusiasm, your kindness, and your boundless energy to change the world and touch the lives of so many people. It’s an amazing and rewarding experience being a Lion.

I would like to invite everyone to attend the NH Lions Multiple District Mid-Winter Convention on January 29th through 31st 2016. Save these dates on your calendar and be a part of the “NH Lions Academy Awards of Recognition”. Please nominate and recognize a special Lion in your club, zone, or district and let them know how much they are appreciated and how special they are. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to present one of your club members with a Melvin Jones Fellowship or a NH Granite State Fellowship; being presented one of these awards by our guest International Director Linda Tincher is an incredible honor. We’re planning a fun weekend and really want to see you there and en-joy your good-fellowship.

Your friend in service,

MCC Terri McGrew H: 603-673-2322 C: 603-554-6822 E: [email protected]

Stephen Richards the author of “Life is good” once said “The true measure of success is how many times you can bounce back from failure.” This sounds like what happens when we try to get new members. More often the answer we get is no, more so because of the approach we use. Many Lions typically use a direct approach which is to simply ask some one to join the club without

helping the potential member, to understand who Lions are , what Lions do, how much commit-ment is involved and the potential costs. The approach that worked a little better is to ask a potential member to get involved with one project so that they can see what your club does and helps them to better understand why we do what we do and increase probability of them joining. This also give the potential member the opportunity to interact with other members and ask questions in a more relaxed atmosphere. As we attempt to increase our prides, we will see many failures. To succeed, we must learn from the failures. This includes learning how to better articulate about our organization and learn how to im-prove our approach for getting new members. This year DG Scott is challenging all clubs

increase membership by 20% (each new member will become a centennial member)

properly orientate them to Lionism

Get them involved The more knowledge we have about our organizations, the easier it will be to champion our clubs and get new members.

The Salem Lions Club has chosen to get more involved in the cleaning of our waterways in the Salem area.

Our club voted to donate $10,000 to the Clean River Project. These monies will be used to a working pontoon boat that the Salem Lions will

name.

The Boat will have the Lions Logo and will be working primarily in southern NH.

As more funding comes the boat will add additional clean ups along the Merrimack River.

This boat will be using a sonar scanner to locate cars, tires, and other debris.

Volunteers are needed. If you are interested in undertaking this project for your club contact Judy Del Valle-Webb at [email protected]

Facebook is more than just getting the word out about you upcoming events or posting about what happened at those events. It’s also for

passing on information about Lions International and new breakthroughs in vision issues, Guide dogs, hearing programs and

other data. The idea is to like the page and then share it. When you share a district post it goes to all your friends. They find out what Lions in our district are doing as well as finding out about Lions in general. Some of us have the same friends and think that’s already

been shared so we don’t have to. I may not have all the same friends in New Hampshire that you do but I still share things on Facebook. By sharing I reach people all over the globe whom I have friended.

Check it out.

HAMPSTEAD — Operation KidSight has teamed up with the Hampstead Lions Club to perform free vision screenings for children ages 6 months and up at the 14th annual Hampstead Health and Safety Fair on Sat.,

September 26, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Hampstead Middle School.

Operation KidSight uses a Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener. This screener takes an instant scan of the eyes to determine the possible presence of eye disorders. There is no physical contact and no eye drops are nec-essary. The child simply looks at the vision screener for a few seconds and a printout is generated with the

results.

Vision and hearing are the main focus of Lions Clubs International; their motto is “We Serve”. Currently, the Lions Clubs of New Hampshire have a goal to vision screen every child in the state. This program is already

underway and many elementary schools have participated in the screenings. For additional information, contact Lion Bob Laferriere at 603-329-8230, or [email protected].

A Program of the New Hampshire Lions Multiple District 44 – Health Services Board

The White Cane

October 15 Is White Cane Safety Day. This is an Interna onal, Na onal and State observance. It’s a day to raise awareness about the signifi-cance and purpose of the white cane. Some clubs hold events around this  me or publicize exis ng events. How will your club celebrate?

The first documented use of the white cane as an iden fica on aid for a blind person was in England in 1920. A er the First World War, there were more people who were blinded when they were young and ac-ve. The white cane helped them get about more safely. In 1944, Dr

Richard Hoover developed the long white cane which turned an iden -fica on cane into a mobility cane.  Once again, this was necessary because a great number of young, ac ve individuals did not want to sit at home simply because they were blinded in the war.

The first use of the white cane in the United States was in Peoria, Illi-nois in 1931 at Lions Club ini a ve. Lions Clubs Interna onal liked the idea and made it their own. The first White Cane Safety Day was prom-ulgated in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It has been renewed every year since.

Why focus on the white cane in an ar cle for the DogSight Project? Before an individual can qualify for a guide dog, he or she must first prove proficiency with a white cane and to know how to travel inde-pendently. A dog doesn’t know how to get from A to B; the dog en-sures that the trip occurs safely. A guide dog can’t tell that the light has changed; it’s up to the handler to say “let’s go,” and the dog to determine if the crossing is safe to make.

Camp Pride Updates The summer season is over and camp is slowly getting ready for a long winter nap. The actual closing of the camp is near complete. We are still seeking a few hands to get it done and plan to go up a couple more times in October.

We had another wonderful camping season with our guest. They all left smiling and tired. This Sep-tember we had a new group come in from Maine. The children had a great time. The extra nice weather was perfect for midsummer camping.

The camp was built on the spirit of volunteerism and this is how we continue to get things done. Please consider lending a hand when you have the time. As I stated we still have some work to do.

If you have any desire to join the board next year this would be a great night to join us. FVDG Al Goldstein

Scheduling  your first screening

Start small if you are new to holding a screening.

Do a small day care.   Perhaps a member has a child or

grandchild in day care.

Start  with one class of 15 to 30 students. Once you have

completed a smaller screening you will see how easy it is and

you  will be anxious to begin with full grade school screenings.

Spring is a good  me to plan for the larger screening if you

want to start small first. Speak with the school to see what will

work best for their schedule.  If you have ques ons or

concerns contact the Zone Coordinators and they can help or

Electronic Waste Collection Day~ Laconia/Gilford Lions Club October 24 ~ Gilford Lowe’s Parking Lot ~ 9 AM – 1 PM

Got an old computer collecting dust in your closet, or a broken refrigerator sitting on the back porch? What do you do with such items when you replace them? Everything from laptops, phones and radios to home appliances or TV's cost a fortune to haul away.

Turn all that junk over to the Laconia-Gilford Lions Club during their Electronic Waste Collection Day on Saturday, October 24 in the Lowe's parking lot in Gilford from 9 AM to 1 PM. For a small disposal fee (most items are $1 to $5), not only will we take your old electronic items off your hands, we will recycle them. The disposal charge is almost always less than the prices at local transfer stations. Cash or checks will be accept-ed but not debit or credit cards.

Just bring your electronics to Lowe's parking lot, 1407 Lakeshore Road in Gilford on Saturday, October 24 between 9 AM and 1 PM. Club mem-bers will even help you unload them! You do not have to be a resident of Laconia or Gilford to take advantage of this fundraiser - it is open to eve-ryone. Items you may want to consider dropping off are computer monitors, laptops, CPUs, servers, CD/DVD players, camcorders, AV equip-ment, VCRs, speakers, mice or keyboards, copiers, faxes, scanners, printers, phones (land and cell), phone systems, UPS systems, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, cords, cables and computer accessories. In addition, we will also take microwaves, air condi-tioners, refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, washing machines, dryers, gas or electric stoves, dishwashers, dumb terminals, and TVs (less than 27”: $20; 27” and larger: $30). Anything with a cord not listed will also be accepted.

You CANNOT drop off: oils, paints, thinners, batteries, tires, items containing mercury such as fluorescent and CFL light bulbs or thermometers, capacitors, ballasts, or any other hazardous waste.

Don't miss this opportunity or you'll be storing these things another year - "Don't throw it out, Recycle it!" You'll not only help the environment by disposing of your unwanted electronics responsibly but also help the Lions, the largest service organization in the world, raise funds to meet pressing needs in our communi-ty: eye glasses and hearing aids, food pantries, college scholarships, holiday food baskets for needy families, youth sports programs, are just a few of the local charitable organizations that we assist. All that for a dis-posal fee of $1 to $30 per item depending on size (almost always less than the cost at local transfer stations). The Laconia-Gilford Lions Club appreciates your help with their Electronic Waste Collection Day fundrais-ing event and wishes to thank in advance everyone who contributes to making a real difference in our com-munity. Look for the yellow Lions' vests on Saturday, October 24 from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Gilford Lowe's parking lot. No matter how large or small, every item adds up!

HOLIDAYS FOOD DRIVE

Last year at the last minute I challenged all of the clubs to do a food drive in November to help support the Holidays. While it was a little last

minute, many clubs stepped up and got it done. I am once again challenging all of you to do it again.

There are many people in the state that are challenged every day to

provide themselves or their families for a nutritious meal. Anything we can do is a plus. Whether it is a true food drive or holiday baskets or

donations to your local food pantries, let’s see what we can do to make it a little better for our neighbors.

Let’s all share our successes in future newsletter!

Proud To serve With All Of You

The Lions Clubs International Centennial Celebration kicked off in July 2014 and ends in June 2018. Your club has the opportunity to earn a banner patch each year by serving those in four major categories.

They are: engaging our youth, sharing the vision, relieving the hunger and protecting our environment. Sound familiar? They should, as they are four of the categories of giving for the Lions Clubs International Foundation. Your club is already doing service projects in these areas, so all that is required is reporting to MyLCI. Don’t forget to add pictures! They could show up on Facebook, twitter or in the Lion magazine. Another way to participate is with inviting new members. Centennial membership awards are available. Be the first in your club to receive the Centennial Sponsor pin! Here’s a great recruiting tool – every new Lion benefits 23 people! 23 people! Let your prospective members know that and see how quickly they join. Take time to assess your community needs and plan a Centennial project that leaves a lasting impression. We, as Lions, need to let our communi-ties know all the good works we do and that we will continue to do them for the next 100 years. Plan a project today!
