Sacred Heart, Ronan Immaculate Conception, Polson Saint Joseph Mission, Charlo A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR On one occasion Jesus said that every teacher is like a householder who brings out of the storeroom both the “old and the new.” (Mt 13:52) This weekend I would like to share something “old.” Old but very familiar. It is the prayer for making a Spiritual Holy Communion that we have all seen on many holy cards and in practically every devotional book that is available. I would highly recommend familiarizing yourself with this prayer and using it with great frequency. This prayer is not just for those occasions when a person is unable to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist, though it should be used on those occasions. The prayer for a Spiritual Holy Communion is a powerful and efficacious prayer that among many, many things that could be said about it, strengthens us in two ways; the first is that it continually fans the flame of our love for the Blessed Sacrament and it keeps alive our faith that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, and secondly, it is a great way to pause throughout the day to unite ourselves to Jesus apart from whom we can do nothing. Make these Communions morning, noon and night and in between. It is a good way to begin your prayers each day and it is a very simple and beautiful way to pause during a busy workday to invite Jesus into your heart. It is a powerful remedy against temptation and can ease times of desolation and dryness bringing back the joy and consolation of the Lord’s presence. You can then, as we should every Holy Communion, offer it for our special intentions. For example, we can offer our Spiritual Holy Communions as an act of reparation for our sins or to console the Sacred Heart of Jesus who suffers so much ingratitude for the great gift of Himself in the Eucharist. Examples can be endlessly multiplied. On a closing note I am including in every bulletin the Surrender Novena. This too is a very powerful and beautiful prayer. Consider it to be a spiritual “little paper bag” into which you can breathe every day (for those who really need it) or use it as a means to deepen your relationship with the Lord. Pray it continually and repeat the novena prayer throughout the day if you can. God bless, Fr. A  NOTE  FROM  THE  PASTOR       On   one   occasion   Jesus   said   that   every  teacher   is   like  a  householder  who  brings  out  of   the  storeroom   both   the   “old   and   the   new.”   (Mt   13:52)    This  weekend  I  would  like  to  share  something  “old.”    Old  but  very   familiar. Kevin  Christofferson

A  Brief  History  of  Coffee  If  you  enjoy  a  good  strong  cup  of  brew,  especially  in  the  morning,  then  you  can  thank   Pope   Clement   VIII.   In   the   17th  century,   Venice   was   an   important  commercial   hub  where   trade   between  Europe   and   the   Arab   countries   to   the  east   took   place.     This   is   where   coffee  made   its   first  appearance   in   the  West.    Because   it   was   a   beverage   consumed  by  the  Muslims  it  was  considered  to  be  a   “bitter   invention   of   the   devil”   and  many   concerned   Catholics   petitioned  the   Holy   See   to   ban   its   sale   and  consumption.     After   taking   a   sip,   the  story   goes   that   Pope   Clement   VIII  declared   that,   “this   devil’s   drink   is   so  delicious  we  should  cheat   the  devil  by  baptizing  it.”    After  giving  the  drink  his  blessing   the   consumption   of   coffee  began   to   spread   throughout   Europe.  Another   pious   legend   suggests   that  after   drinking   a   cup   the   Holy   Father  was   able   to   pray   without   becoming  drowsy   and   so   gave   the   brew   his  blessing.     In   either   case,   when   you  enjoy   your   next   cup,   offer   a   little  prayer  of  thanks  to  Pope  Clement  VIII.

Act  of  Spiritual  Communion

My  Jesus,  I  believe  that  You

are  present  in  the  Most  Holy  Sacrament.  I  love  You  above  all  things,

and  I  desire  to  receive  You  into  my  soul.  Since  I  cannot  at  this  moment  receive  You  sacramentally,

come  at  least  spiritually  into  my  heart.    I  embrace  You  as  if  You  were  already  there  and  unite  myself  wholly  to  You.    Never  permit  me  to  be  separated

from  You.  Amen.

Lent  Reminders  and  Preparation  Available  this  weekend  and  the  next  are  copies  of  Magnificat:  Lent  Companion.    They  may  be  found  at  the  entrance  of  the  churches.    I  think  we  all  know  the  drill   for  Lent;  no  meat  on  Friday,  and  Ash  Wednesday   and   Good   Friday   are   meatless   and   days   of   fasting  (fasting  being  one  principle  meal   and   essentially   two   snacks.)   If  you   are   under   14   years   of   age   or   60   and   older,   you   need   not  follow  the  discipline  but  it  is  a  good  idea  if  you  still  can  and  your  health   permits   it.     Next  week   there   will   be   a   listing   of   ways   in  which  you  can  give  “alms”  this  Lent.    The  needs  are  many.
