Richard BoltonPresident

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

An incredible yearWhat an honour it has been to represent

the Milton business community in 2013, the year of our 125th anniversary. During my tenure as President I have many cherished experiences, opportunities and have met key people that are shaping the future landscape of Milton business. I’ve attended events like the Sports Celebrity Dinner in which I met some of my boyhood sports idols; and had the privilege of presenting community awards at the Gala to exceptional citizens and business people in our community. I’ve had great fun at the Golf Tournament with our members, shared a few laughs with the students at the Farmers’ Market and shared a few stories and met some new members at the Business After Hours. I’ve watched as our Milton Young Professionals group got its start representing the best and brightest young entrepreneurs in our community and celebrated with all of you at the 125th Anniversary Celebration. It has truly been a year to remember.

I recently attended the Canadian Chamber of Commerce – Annual General Meeting (AGM) in beautiful Kelowna B.C. This event brings together all of the Chambers from across Canada to network and review policy resolutions. These resolutions are eventually pushed forward to lobby the government to make

Canada. As awe inspiring as the view of the surrounding mountains was, so was the experience of seeing how all the Chambers across Canada work to develop policy resolutions at a local level, lobby for support from other Chambers and eventually vote

Chamber of Commerce AGM. It’s an amazing network of people.

We recently ran a Economic Bus Tour which is always a big hit with those members interested in the growth strategy for Milton in the area of commercial and residential. The Town of Milton is doing an excellent job of planning for the future commercial business space that will be available for growing a business in Milton. Stay tuned for the details on the opening of the Milton Innovation Centre at 555 Industrial Drive which will be an excellent addition to the business landscape in Milton acting as an incubator for start-up

companies to nurture these business in Milton.

There have been some really exciting Chamber marketing initiatives in the past few months. The Milton Chamber has rebranded and I hope you all like the new look of the Chamber logo. Our special label wine was a huge success (available at the LCBO, while supplies last). Thanks to Bang! creative communications for assisting the Chamber with the rebrand strategy.

In November the Chamber will be developing a Strategic Plan. We’ll be having a series of half day planning sessions with the Board of Directors. The process is important to understand our direction and I’m sure you’ll hear about this in the near future. We also continue our focus on transportation this year, in November we will host a Metrolinx breakfast which is sure to be another sellout as the Chamber knows how important transportation is and the effects it has on local business.

When I look back over the years on our newest initiatives I have a lot of pride in the Young Professionals Group. I believe we should always embrace our future at the Milton Chamber and I know this group of young entrepreneurs will continue to shine.

President. As I pass the torch at the end of the year over to next year’s president, Lesley

for all the hard work and support during the year, she is an amazing leader in our community. To our executive committee and to the entire Milton Chamber Board of Directors thank you for your commitment. It goes without saying that the Milton Chamber would not be the success it is without the contribution and effort of the staff under the leadership of Sandy Martin.

Thank you to all the members for making this an incredible year!

Sandy MartinExecutive Director

Celebrating 125 yearsWow! What a year it has been for the

Chamber. 125 years strong and a future bright with the promise of continuing to support Milton businesses, we strive to meet your needs and expectations during the next 125!

2013 has been a growth year for your chamber. We have added Cheryl Ciccarelli, Committee/Program Coordinator and Zain Masood, Membership Developer to our staff team. Krista Lenardon-Trull, Marketing & Communications Coordinator is responsible for getting our message out in every possible way. Joanne Barrett is the go to person for member inquiries, accounts, and office administration. Andrea Boyle is selling our publications and has just completed the business directory for 2014 (There is space for an ad in our 2014 newsletter). The Chamber office is located in the heart of downtown in the former Town Hall and Farmers’ Market building. If you haven’t visited us – drop by for a cup of tea.

The Milton Farmers’ Market enjoyed a near perfect year with sunny weather and bumper crops. I hope you had an opportunity to visit the market but if not, we will open May 17, 2014 next year. The team of student staff who work the market every weekend did an outstanding job while having a bit of fun and gaining firsthand experience dealing with people from every walk of life. Our Main Street market brings together new and life-long residents and visitors to experience Ontario’s bounty.

The 125th Anniversary committee under the leadership of co-chairs Lesley Mansfield and Richard Bolton have done a phenomenal job of creating the celebration offerings from a private label Chamber wine on sale at local LCBO’s

to a Chamber time capsule to be buried in the spring and opened in 25 years to an evening to remember at the Milton Centre for the Arts with General Rick Hillier. Our new brand was unveiled at our celebration event – we hope you like it. Committee members include Leslie Fitch, Milton Public Library; Carol Duvall, RDC Networks; Hazel Carlin, Town of Milton; David O’Connell, Bang! creative communications and chamber staff. A Heartfelt thanks is extended to our sponsors and members who made the evening so memorable.

In November we have two breakfasts that you are encouraged to attend – please see the upcoming events on page 3. Barb Koopmans, Acting Director of Planning will provide an update for Milton 2016-2031 and a speaker from Metrolinx will talk about transportation “moving forward”. Please attend our AGM in December and congratulate your new Board of Directors.

The Milton Chamber of Commerce is a thriving organization with 775 members employing over 18,000 full time and 6,600 part time employees. Our plan is to continue growing and serving your needs. If you know someone we should speak to please let us know and we will welcome them into the Chamber family.

The Case for Shopping LocalKathleen Davis, entrepreneur.com

It’s a case that small-business owners have been trying to make for years -- shopping at small, local

Sage, if just 10 percent of annual spending in San Francisco was redirected from chains to local busi-nesses, it would generate $192 million in local economic activity and create almost 1,300 new jobs.

ONTARIO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

OCC rapid policy update: Success at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM

Ontario’s Chamber Network has reason to celebrate the outcomes of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s (CCC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kelowna, B.C.

Ontario had considerable voting clout on the AGM f loor, with 98 of the 347 voting delegates–a modern-day record for Ontario. Ontario used its significant presence to pass numerous resolutions sponsored by Ontario chambers of com-merce and boards of trade, including:

• Increasing the GST/HST Filing Threshold (Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce), which would raise the exemption for small businesses earning $100,000 or less from filing GST/HST.

• Fair Tax Treatment of Limited Li-ability Companies (Tillsonburg Chamber of Commerce), which would create a level playing field for American and Canadian Limited Liability Companies, from a tax perspective.

• Electricity in Canada – Power for our Future Competitiveness (Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce), which would create an East-West elec-tricity grid and enable Ontario to access more affordable Newfoundland energy.

• Applying the Accelerated Capital Cost Allowance for Oil Sands, Upgrad-ing, Petrochemical, and Mining In-dustries (Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce), which would encourage new investment in these sectors.

• Facilitating Structural Change in Canadian Manufacturing (Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce), which would encourage investment in manu-facturing and speed the transition to advanced manufacturing.

• Addressing the Skills Crisis (Great-er Kingston Chamber of Commerce), which would improve the quality and availability of labour market informa-tion.

• Ending Homelessness in Canada (Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Com-merce), which supports a “housing first” approach to addressing homelessness and a coordinated federal-provincial strategy to addressing the homelessness

problem. • Allowing the Provinces to Decide

on Single Sports Betting (Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce), which would enable provinces to decide on sin-gle sports betting and enhance Ontario’s ability to attract more American tourists to Ontario destinations.

• Improving Canada’s Infrastructure Through Public-Private Partnerships (P3s) (Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce), which would promote the greater use of P3 models in addressing Canada’s vast infrastructure deficit.

The most contentious issue of the day related to the proposed Canada Job Grant. That said, delegates overwhelm-ingly backed a resolution that “the fed-eral government, instead of implement-ing its own Canada Job Grant program, negotiate with the provincial/territorial governments to renew labour market agreements that are set to expire in 2014, in accordance with on-the-job training priorities.”

The motion also calls for the federal government to meet with a new task force of federal and provincial chamber and board representatives to discuss how to make a job training program meet the needs of employers.

This is encouraging news for Ontario businesses, who have expressed reserva-tions about the Canada Job Grant.

Congratulations to all Ontario cham-bers and boards that participated in this important process, including those who submitted their proxy votes. There is strength in numbers and the Ontario caucus was a force to be reckoned with at this year’s CCC AGM.

A special thanks to the Chairs of the Ontario Caucus, Stu Harrison of the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Com-merce and Bill Stewart of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce.

A memo with all resolutions will be circulated to all chambers as soon as it is available.

On Tuesday, October 22, 2013 the Milton Chamber of Commerce hosted their 125th Anniversary Celebration presented by TD Canada Trust at the Milton Centre for the Arts. At this member only event the Milton Chamber commemorated this historic milestone with the Former Chief of the Defence Staff for Canadian Forces (the Canadian Forces’ Highest Rank) as the keynote speaker, General Rick Hillier.

In over three decades of service to his country, General Rick Hillier has remobilized support of Canadian troops, worked closely with Prime

world stage. In this time of war, under enormous public scrutiny, Hillier has, time and again, made the tough but needed decisions. In terms of leadership, in terms of diplomacy, in terms of strategy, he has few peers.

Following General Hillier’s moving and inspirational speech in the Mattamy Theatre, the Milton Chamber unveiled its new brand with support from our Brand Sponsor, BANG! creative communications. The new Milton Chamber logo was an instant success with members

After the presentations were done, guests gathered in the MinMaxx Hall for a cocktail

food and the Chamber’s 125th Commemorative Wine provided by Pelee Island Winery while members old and new networked throughout the evening.

10 Business Lessons You Should Know By Age 40 Barry MoltzGetting Small Businesses Unstuck, Shafran Moltz Group

I started my business career 30 years ago. I would have never thought back then, when I kicked everything off, that I would work for a large corporation, start three companies and an angel investment fund, become a small business author, motivational speaker and

-ners, and go out of business more than once. It has been a crazy ride, but with age, and all those ups and downs, comes experience—and with experience comes a little bit of wisdom. Here are 10 lessons I wish I had learned before I was 40.

1. You can’t control everything. No matter

how hard you work or who you know, there are so many things out of your control. The sooner you realize that, the less frustrated you’ll be. Work hard at the things you can con-trol and learn to react decisively to the things that are out of your control.

2. Money is not the only measure of suc-

cess. Money is important since it’s the most visible way society keeps score. However, earning enough money doing something you love to support your family is the true mea-sure of success.

3. “Love everyone, trust few and paddle

your own canoe.” Assume that people have the best intentions, but only trust those who have earned it. Your business is what you and

your team make of it. Don’t depend on others for your own success.

4. It’s not what you do; it’s who you are

doing it with. I have been unhappy in many successful businesses since it’s the people you are working with that really count. Business is ultimately about your partners, employees, customers and vendors.

5. Overnight success can take seven to 10

owners have been working at it for almost a decade. Patience is truly a valued virtue for ev-ery small-business owner. Accept that success takes a very long time.

6. We can’t always learn something from

failure. Contrary to popular wisdom, some-times when we fail, there is nothing to learn. When you fail, learn what you can and quickly let go of that failure so you can move on to the next chance to succeed.

7. There will always be winners and losers.

It’s a lot more fun to be a winner, but learning how to be a “good loser” is important too. Don’t be happy about losing, but accepting defeat will allow you to move forward.

8. Sales are vanity; cash is sanity. Forget

about how big your revenue number is or how many people you employ. Focus on how to read

actually get to keep. 9. Focus. Focus. Focus. Those small-

business owners who want to be everything to every customer will ultimately fail. Customer loyalty comes from doing one thing extremely well for them.

10. There are other things in life besides

business. Most entrepreneurs spend too much time at work or thinking about it. This obses-sion creates a very narrow and sometimes lonely world. Getting and giving support to family and friends will make your life journey much more enriching.

Self employed, self reliant Self-employment is a way to earn an

income. It can also be a method of self expression, a way to express your individu-ality and celebrate a sense of accomplish-ment.

While embarking on the self-employ-ment journey, there are many areas that demand attention. Some have higher pri-orities than others. Some tasks are planned and on occasion some catch us by surprise or require immediate attention. All require problem solving skills.

This brings up the notion of responsibil-ity, responsibility for yourself, your suc-cesses and accomplishments. This is the

role as the self-employed person is to solve problems. You not only solve problems for your customers and target markets, but also for yourself.

Problems that require your attention do and will arise regularly. If you lack the skills or time required to solve a particular

resolution. Asking for help is a good thing, however, be aware that if you seek advice from others to address problems, it remains your responsibility to ensure that the cor-rect measures are taken.

What this really means is that you can either pay someone to solve the problem the way you need/want it solved in a certain time frame, or you look to solve the prob-lem yourself. With the latter, you will gain

the knowledge and skills needed to solve similar problems in the future, but it will take your time.

Next time a problem arises in your

Either way, it’s your business and you are the one who is ultimately responsible for whatever action results. As US President Harry S. Truman was fond of saying, “The buck stops here.”

HISTORY OF THE NIAGARA ESCARPMENTThe Niagara Escarpment was formed

about 450 million years ago and stretches across 725 kilometres, from Queenston on the Niagara River just above Niagara Falls to Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula on Lake Huron. Glaciers and water carved the rock formation, creating features like caves, cliffs, waterfalls and eroded shorelines. The Niagara Escarpment is recognized as one of the world’s natural wonders and has been designated as a United Nations Educational,

(UNESCO) World Biosphere Reserve, for its special environment.

MILTON FARMERS’ MARKET

Another great Farmers̀ Market season The Milton Farmers’ Market celebrates

another successful season! A success-ful market does not happen by itself, it is through the efforts of staff, customers and vendors that we are able to provide the town with such a special Saturday morning at-traction. We think it’s the best in Ontario!

The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the Farmers’ Market staff who got up every Saturday morning at 4:00 A.M. to be on the street at 5:00 A.M. to close the street, load up the gear for the Scholarship

Café, set up the café, make the coffee and get the bacon sizzling on the grill all before

on-a bun! A big thanks to Alexander Boyle, Market Coordinator and Scholarship Café Assistants Andrew Boyle, Callum Bowles and Dominique Masci.

A warm and sincere thanks are extended to all Miltonians who supported us in 2013.

Mark your calendars for May 17, 2014 the opening day of the Milton Chamber of Commerce Farmers’ Market!

CANADIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

What $50 million a day means to Canada

Canada is failing to access world markets for its energy products. In a report released today, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce highlights how Canada’s lack of infrastructure is preventing Canadians

in energy markets. Entitled $50 Million a Day, the report stresses how this situation is costing us millions of dollars every day and documents the already enormous loses Canada is experiencing. With U.S. demand declining, the report warns that it is only a matter of time before it starts to really hurt the Canadian economy.

“Canada’s failure to diversify its energy market is leaving millions of dollars on the table every day,” said Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. “We are at a critical point. What’s at stake for Canada is millions of jobs, tax revenues and other economic

for one year of funding for the federal government’s Homelessness Partnership Program ($119 million per year).

Oil and gas, its transportation and its environmental and social impacts have become one of the most pressing policy debates of the last few years. The report lays out key facts every Canadian needs to understand about the issue. It is time to have a balanced discussion about what it means to be an energy nation in the 21st century. The lack of reliable access to tidewater for oil and gas and its attendant effects on the Canadian economy is a key barrier to competitiveness with negative implications for the nation.

“Balancing the essential contribution oil and gas makes to our standard of living with environmental and social responsibility is not easy. Decisions on the future of

decisions we face. The choices we make will shape our economy for years to come,” concluded Beatty.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is the vital connection between business and the federal government. It helps shape public

of businesses, communities and families across Canada with a network of over 450 chambers of commerce and boards of trade, representing some 200, 000 businesses of all sizes in all sectors of the economy and in all regions. Follow us on Twitter @CdnChamberofCom.
