Having caught their triumphant set at Mumford and Sons’ 2012 ‘Gentlemen of the Road’ show in Dungog, I can honestly say that Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes are definitely a band you don’t want to miss.
The band have drawn comparison to acts such as The Polyphonic Spree, Arcade Fire and any number of hippy family bands from the 60’s and 70’s. With their shameless happiness and boundless energy, they are winning passionate new followers at every turn.
The mastermind behind the 11-piece group is Alex Ebert, former front man of indie/punk/electronic group, Ima Robot. Ebert is also the creator of the bands fictitious namesake, Edward Sharpe, a character dreamed up during a difficult period where Ebert made an exit from the lifestyle he was lost in, one that included over indulgence and cynicism, and went back to basics.
what's on If big, bombastic beats, punchy riffing
and catchy choruses get your blood pumping, then the sixth album from Chicago metallers Soil should definitely whet your appetite.
Fans of Soil will be pleased to know that ‘Whole’ represents a return tor the fold for singer Ryan McCombs who left the band after their blistering ‘Scars’ album to take up vocal duties with Texan alterna-metal outfit Drowning Pool.
The album opens in fine style with ‘Loaded Gun’ – a raw and punchy belter that sounds as good as anything off ‘Scars’, yet possibly the finest moment here is the closer, ‘One Love’ which stands out from the pack with well crafted acoustic guitar lines and a much less “growly” vocal performance from McComb.
Heavy.
If high-octane, on the edge of your seat action is your bag, then this absolute thrill-ride from French director Pierre Morel (‘Transporter’) should be right up your alley.
Liam Neeson is at his menacing best as a retired CIA agent who is thrust back into the action when his daughter is kidnapped while on holiday in Paris and, as suspected, he stops at nothing to get his daughter back. Gripping and tense.
While the majority of the world has been hailing director Alfonso Cuarón’s latest outing as a bona fide masterpiece, aside from the jaw dropping special effects, ‘Gravity’ is much ado about nothing.
Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seem-ingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leav-ing Stone and Kowalsky completely alone.
While many have said this reaches the same heights as ‘2001: A Space Odyssey”, in my opinion ‘Gravity’ feels like a scene in a much larger story.

Ramblin’ Man
The last time we saw Ash Grun-wald, he was treading the boards with Scott Owen and Andy Strachan from the Liv-ing End in support of the trio’s
massive and Grunwald’s seventh studio al-bum, ‘Gargantua’.
With the ‘Gargantua’ set still relatively fresh in people’s minds, Grunwald will be taking it back to basics, hitting Aussie roads solo this month.
TE caught up with Grunwald on tour in Canada and he said everything had been going swimmingly in solo mode.
“I’m in Alberta, Canada right now and the tour has been going great,” he said.
“I’m particularly loving playing right now - I’ve gone back to the old Ash Grun-wald formula of lots of amps and gear but at the same time, 100 per cent organic.”
Grunwald, who had worked largely as a solo performer before hooking up with Owen and Strachan, said that teaming up with one of the country’s tightest rhythm sections was an invaluable learning expe-rience.
“I think that whenever you do a project

Music
with somebody, it changes the way you approach things – I guess it forces to look at your work through different eyes,” he said.
“I really learnt a lot about professional-ism from them – I mean, I’m a professional but my style has always been quite casual and they really made me want to practice and challenge myself.
“I kind of liken it to snowboarding. I’ve been doing it for around ten years and back in the day, I was constantly improv-ing and challenging myself and it was re-ally fun and exciting. I recently went out just for fun and I found that I got bored re-ally quick – you really need to constantly challenge yourself to keep it fresh.”
To that end, Grunwald has taken up the harmonica (something Grunwald said was “really frustrating to be crap at, but ulti-mately satisfying”, and is currently demo-ing and writing for a new studio album but don’t expect him to be reinvent the wheel.
“I reckon I really want to get back to basics, you know, the roots stuff that I started out with, but gigs lately have been getting pretty riffy and heavy so I want to incorporate that stuff, too.
"So, I’d say I’ll be holing up in a studio with a massive wall of amps and then just crank something out.”

Still got the blues
If you’re discussing blues in this country, it’s pretty much a free kick that you’re not going to get pretty far without mentioning Sydney icons The Bondi Cigars.
For the past quarter of a century, the band, along with the likes of Chain, and Chris Wilson have been at the forefront of the Australian blues scene, thanks to eight blistering albums and one hell of a live show and the boys will be back in the region to celebrate 25 years of singing the blues.
“Yeah, Newcastle has always been great to us, right from when we kicked off all those years ago, so it’s great that we can come back and celebrate 25 years in such a great rock and roll town,” guitarist Shane Pacey told TE.
Pacey said he still couldn’t believe that the band was going all these years later, but he put it down to a tireless work ethic and a certain fearlessness when they get onstage.
“I was in my early 30s when the band
Stephen BiSSet

started and, back in those days, bands were very ephemeral things – I really ex-pected it to implode within six months and yet, here we are.
“Also, I think one of the reasons for our longevity is that we were never really locked in to playing a particular set on-stage – we have always been free, kind of by virtue of the kind of music we play , to loosen things up on stage – some-times it works really well and sometimes it doesn’t, but that’s where the excitement is – for me at least.”
It’s a pretty amazing feat that the Cigars have been able to forge a career that has lasted for a quarter of a century without the requisite mainstream label and radio support – a fact that Pacey said he wears as a kind of badge of honour.
“I wouldn’t say we’ve had no support – regional and community radio have al-ways been there, the ABC have been great and the media have always been pretty kind to us, but I consider us really quite lucky to have avoided that whole main-stream treadmill – it’s an industry that feeds on new blood and while we’ve nev-er really been invited to the party, we’ve never really missed it.”

Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry) is a Moroi prin-cess: a mortal vampire who lives in danger of the bloodthirsty Strigoi, the fiercest and most dangerous vampires who are hell-bent on taking the lives of the Moroi. Walt Disney Animation Studios, the stu-dio behind ‘Tangled’ and ‘Wreck-It Ralph’, presents ‘Frozen,’ the blockbuster hit of Christmas 2013, as special sing-a-long ses-sions that are sure to delight the young and young at heart.
‘The Little Mermaid’ features the be-loved Ariel, a fun-loving and mischie-vous mermaid, who is enchanted with all things human. Disregarding her father’s order to stay away from the world above the sea, she swims to the surface and res-cues the prince of her dreams.
Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.
Starring Lena Headey, Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, David Wenham, Jack O'Connell, Sullivan Stapleton, Hans Matheson and directed Noam Murro.

While never coming close to the darkly comic noir of ‘Fargo’ or the near-perfect comedy romp ‘The Big Lebowski’, there is still plenty to love about Joel and Ethan Cohen’s latest outing ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’. Loosely based on ‘The Mayor of MacDougal Street’ – the biography of folk musician Dave Van Ronk, the film follows a week in the life of the title character, an up-and-coming folk singer in the burgeoning Grenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s at a time when Bob Dylan had yet to grace the world with his pres-ence. Recovering from the suicide of his singing partner, the highly cynical and caustic Davis is trying to crack it as a solo artist but constantly finds himself surrounded by phonies and sell-outs.
Aside from a brilliant performance from Oscar Isaac as Davis, and some solid back up from (Cohen Brothers favourite) John Good-man, Justin Timberlake and Carey Mulligan, this film’s triumph lies in a sweetly meandering script, a marmalade cat that threatens to steal the show and one of the best soundtracks in recent memory.
German and Russian villians, car chases, explosions, and a sexy blonde assassin. When it comes to action movie clichés the latest Kevin Costner blockbuster, '3 Days to Kill' has got them all.
Written by Luc Besson, whose credits include Taken and the TV series Nikita, 3 Days to Kill sees Costner play terminally ill CIA operative, Ethan Renner, who, while attempting to repair ties between his estranged wife and teenage daughter in Paris, must complete one final hit before retirement.
Overlooking the weak storyline and massively underdeveloped characters, the worst past of this film is the lazy editing. There are a few scenes where the dialogue is not synced properly with the visual and continuity issues pop up more than once. Worst of all because the plot is about as fluid as a locomotive on square wheels you notice these mistakes instantly.
Produced at a cost of $28 million, '3 Days to Kill' is relatively low-budget when it comes to action movies and it shows. Perhaps more funds in the post-production kitty wouldn’t have gone astray.

Bec Willis is one of those rare covers artists who honour the song by delivering it recognizably and with passion, but also injects her own unique flavour making it her own. Bec has been playing covers gigs for 15 years and has mastered the art of knowing exactly what an audience wants.Willis uses only acoustic guitar, voice and harmonica, yet still manages to get bodies out of their seats and on the dance floor with what Beccy Cole calls her ‘strong right hand’ – which is muso speak for a very solid guitar player. And Beccy Cole should know – Bec Willis was her right hand girl playing guitar and singing in Cole’s band for three years of Australian touring. During this time Bec polished her ethic and sound through working with artists such as Cole, Adam Harvey, Troy Cassar-Daley, Bill Chambers and Kasey Chambers.

I f you are a subscriber to the ‘they don’t make ‘em like they used to’ philosophy when it comes to music,
then you’ll want to make a bee line to the Damn Good Divas show.
Produced by the same team that brought us John Waters’ iconic ‘Look-ing Through a Glass Onion’, ‘Dusty: The Concert’ and ‘Todd McKenny Sings Songs and Stories of Peter Allen’, ‘Damn Good Divas is a celebration of the classic divas of our time – think the likes of Barbara Streisand, Cher, Bette Midler, Aretha Franklin and Liza Minelli.
Featuring Monique Montez (pictured) and Danielle Barnes in an array of fabulously glitzy costumes, the show also features a seven-piece band who have been the backbone musicians to such shows as Dusty The Concert, Todd McKenney and more.
Monique Montez has wowed audi-ences with her brilliant portrayal of no less than five major roles in the Hit Musical – Dusty The Original Pop Diva. Her bio is packed with esteemed
credentials, acclaimed shows, awards and accolades from high places.
From performing in “We Will Rock You” (Japan), “Fiddler on the Roof” (New Zealand), to a “Best Female Vocal-ist” nomination (12th ACE Awards) and a Helpmann Award nomination for her “Saturday Night Fever” performance, Monique brings to the show her years of experience and amazing chemistry with the audience.
Danielle Barnes' career has spanned over 23 years. She has featured in some of the biggest musical productions such as ‘They’re Playing Our Song’, ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’, ‘Carousel’, ‘The Full Monty’, ‘Oh What A Night!’, ‘Buddy The Musical’, ‘The Boy From Oz’, ‘Beauty & The Beast’, ‘Hello Dolly’ and ‘the Music Of Andrew Lloyd Webber’.
Like Montez, Barnes has performed internationally in Beijing and New Zealand to over-whelming accolades.
Catch the Damn Good Divas show at Belmont 16s on Saturday, March 15 and a special 3pm matinee performance at Nelson Bay Diggers on Sunday, March 16.

T he Dennis Boys Band are one of the best things happening in contem-porary Australian country music
– an important breath of fresh, authentic, country air.
The band, comprising three brothers, a sister and a close family friend, have been making music together in one form or another for something like 20 years.
In 2006, after years of each of them doing other gigs, they joined forces and seri-ously got their act together – doing a lot of shows, writing a bunch of songs and using the head start that sibling understanding gives them to turn the band into a formi-dable live outfit.
The band take classic sounds and put them in a modern context. It makes no sense in the modern era, no matter how red your neck, to pretend that punk and reggae (for example) didn’t happen, and the Dennis boys don’t, incorporating everything they’ve been relevantly influ-enced by into the sound of the band, while retaining certain core country music-making values.
The result is solid earthy songs, but with big variety in the rhythmic feels and sophisticated chord changes.

Lovely jubbly
I t’s been a relatively long time since Canadian roots/folk trio The Good Lovelies struck a chord in the Antipo-
des, but they’ve well and truly redressed that balance, kicking off an Oz tour last week that will see the trio ply their bright, breezy and sassy brand of folk at the Royal Exchange Theatre tomorrow night (Thursday).
“We were last in your wonderful coun-try in 2011 and we had such a wonder-ful time, we’ve just been dying to come back – we’ve been talking about this trip for six months,” Kerri Ough, one-third of the trio, told TE.
The band – Ough, Caroline Brooks and Sue Passmore - are in the country in sup-port of their latest release – ‘Live at the Revolution’ – an album which Ough said truly captured the energy and playful-ness of a Good Lovelies show.
“Anyone who has seen us will know that we love to have fun and laugh and
joke around and we really tried ot cap-ture that energy on the record. Also, we have a few covers in the set and we thought “we’ve been playing these songs for a while, it would be good to get them recorded so we can move on to some new covers to throw into the set.”
How the triogot together is a bit of a mystery. Sue remembers meeting her band mates during a limbo competi-tion, Caroline thinks they met at a chess tournament, but Kerri is convinced they first crossed paths during a bar fight. Whatever the story may be, the ladies immediately realised they had some-thing special. Aside from their delight-ful harmonies, the trio have gained quite a reputation for their live show and Ough said the mandate of the band was to en-sure everyone left a Good Lovelies show happy.
“Our main goal is for someone, who may be having a really crummy day, to come along to a show and forget about all that crumminess and leave with a smile on their face.”

I t’s been quite the rollercoaster ride for Rod Gregory since rocketing to national stardom under the moniker
of The Old Fella in the 2011 series of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ – however, after playing around three or four gigs a week for the past three years, the former shearer and viticulturalist is hanging up the stand-up mic – well, sort of.
“It’s almost correct that I’m retiring,” the affable comedian told TE.
“I plan to stop touring at the end of May this year and then I want to take six months of to knock out a book that’s been rattling around in my head and after that I was planning on just doing shows at festivals like the Gympie Muster and Tamworth – I mean, I’ve done more than 500 gigs – it’s good to have a bit of a rest.
After auditioning for ‘Australia’s Got
Talent’ at the insistence of a teacher of a comedy course he was enrolled in to get some ideas for short stories he was writ-ing, Gregory’s unpretentious brand of humour has taken Australia by storm – a fact that is a constant source of amaze-ment for the comedian.
“I’m constantly blown away by the amount of support I’ve received over the years,” he said.
“I honestly think the reason for it is that, for one, I’m a genuine charmer who has come straight from the track to the stage, I’m a big champion of using Aussie language from the 1950s – words like "corker" and "fair dinkum" and also, most importantly, I don’t swear on stage which is a bit of a rarity in comedy these days – it kind of makes me a bit of a rebel.”
Catch the Old Fella at Soldiers Point Bowling Club on Wednesday, March 12, Toronto Workers on Thursday, March 13 and Wests New Lambton on Friday, March 14.
