The history of rock ‘n’ roll is littered with musical prodigies, charismatic storytellers, oblivion-seeking omnivores and odds-defying survivors whose contributions to the soundtracks of our lives have attained for them—or at least their work—a measure of immortality. Rarely, though, do all of these traits come together in the form of a single person, as they do in the case of legendary saxophone player Bobby Keys. Touring since the age of 15, Texan Bobby Keys has played with them all. From Dion's 'The Wanderer' to the solo records of three Beatles, Joe Cocker, The Who, Clapton, The Faces, Nillson and Lynyrd Skynyrd to name a star studded few. He has also toured with a band called the Rolling Stones since 1970, and it is in between shows with the Stones as they travel about the Southern Hemisphere that we get to witness Bobby and his band The Suffering Bastards stomping it out.

You’d think that when Ben Chasny from the swirling psych outfit Six Organs of Admittance teamed up with Donovan Quinn from psych-folkers Skygreen Leopards, the result would be something approaching the equivalent of a sonic lava lamp.

However, on ‘Voices in a Rented Room’, the pair are relying less on the kaleidoscopic miasma that typifies both the Organs and the Leopards and more on straight-up folk. The instrumentation is predominantly acoustic and mostly skeletal – highlighting the way in which both Chasny and Quinn can fill a song with just the barest elements – a guitar, piano, and some loose harmonies. Standouts here include the Big Star-esque ‘Sometimes You Crash and the introspec-tive ‘Your Girlfriend Might Be A Cop’.

From Danish director Nicholas Winding Refn, who gave us the uncompromising Pusher trilogy and the brilliant bio-pic Bronson, comes this stylish and tense drama that offers more than a few surprising moments. Ryan Gossling (Blue Valentine, The Ides of March) stars as an unnamed wheelman-for-hire who, by day makes a living as a movie stuntman.

Refn presents the action in a meandering, dream-like, almost Lynchian way.

It is a truism of modern cinema that both Denzel Washington and Mark Whalberg know their way around an action flick – something that is proved, once again in ‘2 Guns’.

DEA agent Robert Trench (Washington), takes advantage of gunman Michael Stigman's (Whalberg) idea to rob a bank to bust him and a mob boss. However, it proves too successful with much more money seized than anticipated with Trench's forces not stopping the getaway. Complicating things still more, Stigman turns out to be a Naval Intelligence agent who shoots Trench and takes the money.

The debacle suddenly finds Trench and Stigman in a bloody web of corruption.

One, along with the likes of Don Walker and Paul Kelly, is widely regarded as one of the most evocative song-writers Australia has ever

produced. The other, who, as guitarist with Midnight Oil, was the architect of some of the most powerful Oz rock ever committed to tape. So, you know that when Neil Murray and Jim Moginie get together, the result will be something very special indeed.

The pair will be swinging by Newcastle next month for their ‘One Of Those Tunes’ show which Murray, the author of the uplifting classic ‘My Island Home’ said would be an intimate retelling of both his and Moginie’s careers although, ever humble, he added that he wasn’t sure how much he would bring to the party.

“The show is basically us doing a lot of tracks from both our back catalogues, but not necessarily the ones you might expect,” he said.

“Although, I’m not really sure how much I add to Jim’s stuff, but he adds a hell of a lot to mine – I’m just a hack guitarist, Jim’s the real muso."

The Warumpi band opened for the Oils on their legendary ‘Blackfella Whitefella’ tour and have collaborated often ever since, (the pair first collaborated in the studio on the Warumpi Band’s original version of the classic ‘My Island Home’, with Jim on keyboards. Jim has contributed as producer and musician on most of Neil’s albums), Murray said that a fair amount of intuitiveness had built up between the two.

“It is very intuitive between us – we almost don’t have to verbalise anything,” he said.

“Jim just has a fantastic grasp of where I want to go with my music and this comes across really well on stage.”

For Murray, who with the Warumpi band, is regarded as one of the pioneers and great champions of indigenous music remains philosophical about the influence he has had on the Aussie music landscape.

“I really don’t think about it in terms of influence, I just think of my career in terms of what I’m doing now – I just want to continue to produce music that is vital. I mean the Warumpi Band definitely blazed a trail and it’s nice that people think that way about my work, but I certainly don’t dwell on it.

“To be frank, the greatest award that I’ve been given is having a young Aboriginal man come up to me and tell me that if it wasn’t for my music, he wouldn’t be alive. You just can’t beat that recognition.”

Hands up in the air

They may’ve been a little quiet since their 2009 acoustic album ‘Dancing in the Storm’ but Melbourne-born pop-rockers Boom Crash Opera are

certainly making up for lost time.With a compilation, ‘The Best Things’

and a four-album box-set ‘Rattle It Out’ currently doing their thing, the band are about to embark on a national tour that will see them swing by Bimbadgen for a bill of Oz rock legends including Jimmy Barnes, The Angels and Ian Moss. Front-man Dale Ryder told TE that the band were literally ‘champing at the bit’ to get back out on the road.

“It’s great to be getting out there again,” he said. “We played a couple of warm-up shows in Adelaide and they went really well and the Day on the Green shows are just the icing on the cake for us.”

Ryder said the band, who were respon-sible for such classics as ‘Onion Skin’, ‘Hands Up In the Air’ and ‘Her Charity’, were undergoing a bit of a renaissance

at the moment, but it was more about having fun than putting their nose to the rock and roll grindstone. “Yeah, well we played some Day on the Green shows last year that went really well and after that we were sitting around listening to the songs and we realised that there was plenty of life in Boom Crash Opera, yet,” he said. “There’s a lot less pressure this time around – it’s more about having fun, I mean we’re under no illusions of conquer-ing the world, we just want to get out there and have a good time.”

Aside from an inherent ability to write songs with more hooks than Rex Hunt’s tacklebox, Boom Crash Opera were also no slouches in the live arena, earning a repu-tation as one of the most energetic bands on the circuit. Ryder said that there was no need to get match-fit for the upcoming shows as all the energy he needed was contained within the songs.

“It really in the songs – I just can’t help but to jump around and such when playing them,” he said. “Peter [Farnan, guitarist] is just so good at injecting that energy into the music and there’s a certain bombastic attitude about our music that makes it really quite easy to give it your all.”

Screen legend Kevin Costner ups the ante as a dying Secret Service agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.

Directed by McG (‘Termi-nator Salva-tion’, ‘Charlie’s Angels’), expect plenty of thrills in this one.

The thrills are set to continue with this edge-of-your-seat action fest. It is the most basic of human desires that sees aging booze-hound, Woody Grant (Bruce Dern), travel from in Montana to Nebraska, with his son David (Will Forte), the pursuit of the good life. Oh, and $1 million.

Like director, Alexander Payne’s last feature film, 'The Descend-ants', 'Nebraska' is an exploration of family. The complexities and dynamics come to light through subtle and clever dialogue that, like the performances, never feels forced. The black and white cinematography by'Phedon Papamichael, is utterly stunning – corn fields and interstates never looked so good. Forte proves he’s good for more than just skits on Saturday Night Live and shares some truly tender scenes Dern as David tries to get closer to his hardened dad, while the Oscar nominated, June Squibb is hilarious as the matriarch, Kate. The film does sometimes move at about the same pace as an octogenarian from America’s Midwest, but if you can put up with the slow tempo, a beautiful payoff awaits.

While its predecessor was an exercise in tension, showing that Aussies could make genre pics along with the best of them, this latest instalment comes of as a pale imitation.

Much of the unrelenting savageness of the original has been superseded with an almost comic tone, reminiscent of the later ‘Nightmare on Elm Street Films’.

Director Greg McLean steers a very similar path, plot-wise this time around with everyone’s favourite psychopathic bushman Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) cutting a swathe through a slew of unwitting victims.The body-count may be higher in this one, but there is an overarching sense of style over substance.

However, there are some moments that truly work – most nota-bly a scene in which Taylor terrorises an English backpacker with a disturbing Australian history quiz that also involves fingers and a grinder. Ouch. Jarratt brings the same level of over the top menace to the role, but the film is further marred by perhaps one of the most unsatisfying endings in recent memory.

Here’s a quick notice to all working musicians. If you are not Bruce Springsteen or a member of the E Street band then, chances are,

you’re doing it wrong. What Springsteen accomplishes onstage, evidenced perfectly at the second of his Hope Estate shows, transcends the typical rock and roll show paradigm and takes it to a place that is truly inspiring and dare I say it, life-affirming.

Opening the three-and-a-half-hour-set with a rousing rendition of Eric Burdon and War’s ‘Spill the Wine’ (perfect for the winery crowd) Springsteen and his formidable retinue of players known as the E Street Band held the crowd in the palm of their hand with a set-list of clas-sics and more obscure cuts that pleased Springsteen dilatants and die-hards alike. All of the tracks you would expect were here – ‘Dancing in the Dark’, ‘Born in the USA, ‘Born to Run’ et al (albeit in

encores), but songs like ‘Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)’ and 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) from his ‘The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle’ album, were the icing on the cake.

So, what about the band? Well, without any word of hyperbole, the E Street Band are the best band on the planet. Hands down. In any other outfit, four guitarists might be seen as overkill, however when those guitarists in question are Spring-steen, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Steven “Little Steven” Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, all is forgiven. Also, mention must be made of the brilliantly brassy horn section, led by Jake Clem-ons – the nephew of legendary E Street Band sax wrangler Clarence Clemons, who rival the iconic Muscle Shoals horn section, and the metronomic talents of drummer Max Weinberg.

While the aforementioned ‘Sandy’ and ‘Rosalita’ were standouts in this reviewer’s humble opinion, Tom Morello threatened to steal the show with a highly impassioned rendition of ‘The

Ghost of Tom Joad’ that culminated in a cacophony of guitar trickery from the former Rage member that sounded more like a DJ than guitarist.

While the majority of the set was a literal rock and roll masterclass, Springsteen closed the show with a second encore with two moving solo performances of ‘I Wish I Were Blind’ and ‘Thunder Road’ and with that, an awestruck silence wafted over the crowd.

Nature boy returns

A fter 50 years in the business, the legendary Kamahl finds himself at a crossroads. He has just released

what he describes as his best album yet in his 3-disc set ‘Heart and Soul’ (a best-of album that also features his inspirational rendition of the ‘Gettysburg Address’), however it seems the machinations of promotion are slower than he expected. Speaking to TE, the iconic baritone said it was a case of history repeating.

“In 1970, I found myself between a rock and a hard place – I had some records out but was receiving no airplay at all,” he explained.

“Out of sheer desperation, I found myself in Melbourne on a miserable October afternoon and I looked out the window and across the road was a BP Service Station, I decided to make a call and I ended up doing an album called ‘Peace on Earth’, of quasi-Christmas songs that was sold exclusively through BP.

“I ended up selling 135,000 albums and I gave all the royalties - $49,000 – to

the charity Freedom From Hunger. “As we speak I am in a similar predicament - I have this fantastic album out but nobody knows about it so I will be also be selling the album through Rotary to support their fantastic ‘End Polio Now’ campaign."

Kamahl, who after arriving in Adelaide from Malaysia in 1953, became a household name with more than 30 albums under his belt (as well as Order of Australia, Father of the Year and Centenary Medal nods) added that while he felt blessed to still be singing after all these years, he remained philosophical about his icon status.

“My voice has nothing to do with me – beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” he said.

“I remember going back to Malaysia to visit my mother when she was alive and she said “Okay son, if you want to sing the white man’s music let’s here some”, so I sang her [Nat King Cole’s] ‘Nature Boy’, and she said “oh doesn’t that hurt your voice, singing like that?

“But, it’s just unbelievable that I’m still able to do this, to be accepted. It’s the highest possible reward."
