Introduction and commentary

The learner work that follows has been assessed accurately to national standards. This is one example of a Distinction grade on the core internally assessed unit.  The Digital Portfolio developed achieved all of the set criteria.  The assignment brief used was the Pearson Authorised Assessment Brief for Unit 3: Design a Portfolio, and was not modified by the centre.  This learner has achieved all of the set criteria for Learning Aim A (2A.P1, 2A.P2, 2A.M1 and 2A.D1). The final design justification explains how the portfolio fulfilled its intended purpose and met the needs of its target audience. The detailed design documentation includes a clear timeline for the project, a fully-referenced asset table and a detailed structure chart. The eight-page storyboard demonstrates a consistent approach to layout and colour schemes. The proposed alternative design solution also provides a clear description of alternative styles, layout and assets. This learner has achieved all of the set criteria for Learning Aim B (2B.P3, 2B.P4, 2B.P5, 2B.M2. 2B.M3, 2B.M4 and 2B.D2). The learner has used a good range of assets in the development of their digital portfolio. The folder structure and testing strategy used demonstrates a good awareness of the audience and purpose. The context and section pages clearly explain the choice of content and the navigation routes used. Commentaries were used consistently throughout the portfolio. A good range of assets were used with video links included to introduce the portfolio content, which demonstrated a good use of multimedia assets to enhance the user experience. The portfolio was tested for purpose and functionality and end-user recommendations were also considered. This demonstrated an awareness of the target audience and intended purpose of the portfolio. The result of the development and testing process made the portfolio easy to navigate and ensured it looked professional. This learner has achieved all of the set criteria for Learning Aim C (2C.P6, 2C.M5 and 2C.D3). The learner has evaluated the final portfolio against the initial design documentation and considered how the portfolio addresses the needs of the target audience and how it is fit for the intended purpose. Comments from the end-user testing helped the review process. The learner has also provided a rationale for the changes made throughout the development and creation of the digital portfolio, and has made recommendations for further improvements.

Unit 3: A Digital Portfolio

Learning aims covered

Learning aim A: Design a digital portfolio Learning aim B: Create and test a digital portfolio Learning aim C: Review the digital portfolio

Scenario You want to apply for an IT job when you finish your BTEC course and you’ve

heard that a local company, Konnekted, recruits IT apprentices. As part of your job application, you are going to produce a digital portfolio so that the company can see the work that you can produce. You know that potential employers will want to see a range of your work, such as written documents, images (still and moving), audio tracks, programs and systems that you have created during your course. The range of work you produce will show how suited to the job you are. You can also include any other relevant activities that you have done, such as other courses or qualifications, activities completed for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, community work you have undertaken and any other achievements, as well as details about yourself. Your digital portfolio needs to impress the people at Konnekted and, if necessary, other employers, as you are sure that there will be other people applying for the apprentice positions. Therefore, it is important that your portfolio shows that you have all the skills required for the role. Your digital portfolio will be hosted on a server and employers like Konnekted will be able to access it through a web browser. It will be made up of a number of linked web pages. All of the content will need to be in a format suitable for displaying on the web. The portfolio will have a main page, which the other pages will link to. You will need to split your portfolio into different sections based on the different content you have created. The portfolio must include work from all your completed units in the course.

 © Pearson 2014 5

Task 1 Produce a detailed design of the portfolio that, with a written justification for your design, you are going to submit for an IT job at a potential employer such as Konnekted. It should include the following information. Who your portfolio is aimed at and what its purpose is. You should tailor the

portfolio to showcase your skills and achievements, and produce an original design to set your application apart from those of the other people who apply.

A project plan or timeline which provides a predicted date for when your portfolio will be finished.

A detailed storyboard of your preferred solution; describing at least eight screens, and showing how you will layout the pages and what content each page will contain. You can include colours, fonts, moods and styles.

A diagram or chart showing how people can navigate through your portfolio. A list of all the resources (assets) you will use. This includes logos, texts,

images, video, audio tracks and other content that your site will contain, with details of where they have come from and where these assets will be used.

Details of an alternative solution. This does not have to be a fully completed design but should outline how the design could be done differently. It could cover text and image description, navigation details and the asset list. You could outline alternative ideas on the preferred solution’s storyboard, but you should clearly identify that the idea is an alternative and explain why you have rejected the idea.

Include a written justification of your design, saying how it will meet its purpose, how each asset will enhance the user experience and how it has been designed to meet the needs of the audience.

Consider what your potential employer will be looking for when viewing your portfolio and bear these in mind when designing your portfolio. The portfolio must include work from all your completed units in the course.

Evidence you must produce for this task

Comprehensive design document that contains the following. Description of aim and purpose. Timeline. Detailed storyboard. Detailed structure chart. Table of ready-made assets with fully referenced sources. Alternative design solutions. Design justification.

Criteria covered by this task:

To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to: Unit Criterion reference

Describe the audience and purpose for the design of a digital portfolio. 3 2A.P1

Task 2 Create and Test Your Portfolio With your plans all in place, you can now create and test your portfolio, refining and justifying the content as necessary. You will need to create: 1. a folder structure to hold the different types of content 2. html web pages (to display the assets) 3. commentaries to introduce and explain the assets.

4. Make sure that all the assets are in a format suitable for the web. You will

need to check the file format and also the size of any images, videos and animations. You may need to change any text that has been created using a word processor so that it displays correctly when formatted in HTML.

5. Create the necessary pages for your portfolio using HTML and other assets; for example, text, images, audio and video. Your navigation should be consistent and straight forward.

Now that you have created your portfolio, you need to test it for purpose and functionality. Create a test plan that includes the steps to check that your portfolio works

properly when used in different browsers and by different computer systems. Work through your test plan, recording and correcting any faults that are found.

Get feedback from the users of your portfolio, especially about the suitability of your portfolio for the intended audience. Make changes as necessary.

Refine and justify your choice of content. Provide a detailed commentary that contextualises the content and shows how the assets have been chosen to enhance the user experience.

How my designs meet the needs of the audience and purpose

The purpose of my portfolio is too show off my skills so that I can get a job. In order to achieve this I have included a copy of my CV and I have also included my GCSE grades. The portfolios will also show the work that I have completed on the BTEC course such as reports, documents, images, audio tracks, programs and systems. It will show that I have good skills and am well-suited to be a IT Apprentice or any IT job.So that potential employer can see the work that can do and have completed successfully.

I have organised my portfolio into sections, a page dedicated to each unit and an explanation the skills that I have learnt. I choose to have introductions as would show that I have understood the work that I was given.

The aim is to not only to give an outline of my work but also some information about me as a person. It will also show that I have IT skills and would be a good IT apprentices

The audience of my digital portfolio are my potential employersin order for them to be interested in my work I’ve made my portfolio look professional. I have done this by adding a colour scheme and a photo to my web page to help catch their attention. Each page will have a number of linked web pages so that it is easy to navigate for perspective employers to see my skills.

The page layout will also look professionals .When I added my tables I will made sure that my tables were neat as this

would prevent the web pages from being untidy. This will mean that my website will look neat this will helps because if the website is too over crowded it would be untidy and uninteresting.

The portfolio will be thoroughly tested so that the potential employer will see that I am skilled and would be a goof IT Apprentice.

These are my design documents

My design will include: timeline for the project a structure chart indicating navigation routes original and readymade assets list storyboard mapping out the layout and content

How my portfolio is suitable for its audience and purpose My portfolio is suitable for my audience because I have created a relaxed but professional and interesting web page. All of my skills can be seen by the prospective employer. I have done this by using tables to show all of the information and clip art images to add some multimedia to my website. This would help the audience because they would be interested by my Wide variety of it skills. When I got somebody else to review my website they liked the relaxed blues and whites however felt that some of the pages lacked information. I acted on this by including some introductions on the homepages of the units as well as on my GSCE page. By doing this I have made my website more professional and more interesting to read. My digital portfolios purpose is to advertise my It skills to

a computer company called Konnected. I decided that the digital portfolio should contain all of the units I have covered because then my future bosses can see my wide

 © Pearson 2014 40

variety of skills. It’s also important that they also can read about me as a person. To achieve this I have added my cv. Which I have spent a lot of time writing to make sure that it is professional. I also included an introduction which includes Information about me and my interests and hobbies. I have also to record an introduction on quick time. This recording was to include a brief intro on each unit as well as noting who I was and that I’d also included a page with my CV.

How the asset help make the webpage work

I have used a good number of different assets e.g. text, images, video, photos, templates, hypertext image link buttons.

The text is the same and consistent in style and type on every page and provides the information about my me and my skills.

The video is used as a brief intro on each unit as well as noting who I was. This makes the portfolio look interesting and attractive to the perspective employer. It also shows them my skills.

The frontpage template makes the overall portfolio attractive with the same colour and text in every page. Its easy to see and read if all of the information is on the same place in every page.

I have cropped the images that I found to make sure that they fit and looked on the pages.

I took a picture of myself using the school camera so that the prospective employer could see what i look like.

 © Pearson 2014 41

The layout of every page is consistent with a home page and a page for each of the sections. I created hypertext image link buttons to make it easy for the user to navigate. How the navigation options makes the product easy to use and professional. All of the buttons also look the sam so the webpage flows and look professional

Justification of my portfolio against my design The first element in designing and creating my portfolio was to write the purpose and the audience of the portfolio. This was important because I could relate this to my designs to determine what I needed to include in my portfolio. I then made a time line to help me lay out what task I was to do and how long it should take me to complete it. Next I made two different versions of my navigation tree.one which was a final version and a second which was to include the alternative designs. This was to help me because I would have a backup plan if the final design couldn’t work. I next started to design each page these were detailed as I knew exactly what needed to be done. For example I annotated what colours I wanted to use and what would be the purpose of that button. I choose to have the buttons down the left hand of the page because they out of the way of my main information but they are still in the users eye. I also created 3 alternative versions of my pages. I choose to place the navigation buttons above the information on my pages. I did this because I thought that if having the are down the side was unsuitable I could then have it across the page. This also meant I would also be able to spread the information around my pages more because there are more room. Once these designs were completed I could then load up Microsoft FrontPage and I could start to make my portfolio. The first step was to sort out the navigation system. I had a mother and a child tier. It is called this because the mother tier is above the child tier. I choose to do this

 © Pearson 2014 42

because each unit would have a homepage with other pages coming off of it. I could then start to make my pages I added the navigation bars to my pages and on the homepage added the picture of me along with an introduction to my portfolio. The portfolio was important because not only was it to introduce the company to my portfolio but also to myself. I included in my introduction my it skills as well as my hobbies and interests. This was because I wanted them not just to see what I like and but what I don’t like as well. I then made my pages whilst I was doing this I created a table in Microsoft Word which was my asset list. This is where I could keep track of all the pictures and clip art I had used. Once I had completed all of my pages I could then start to test my website in internet explorer, Firefox and Google chrome. These were all very successful although I still feel that the layout of my portfolio could be neatened up.

On my hardware page I have included the documents which relate to  the unit. These included an asset list and types of hard ware documents. This page will have all of the resources for this unit , they are grouped together so that they can be found easier.

This is my upgrading and maintaining page. This page includes evidence of me carrying out the procedure of maintain and upgrading a computer hardware system. This page also has my letter to our client discussing the strengths and the weakness of them buying a laptop they have chosen.

An absolute must for me to include in my digital portfolio was my CV I have made a page dedicated to this. The CV will help the clients to understand me as a person.

It  is important in any job application or portfolio  that you should include your GCSE results. I have a page which has  two clipart images to liven up the page, my table of grades and an introduction to the page and how I carried out my GCSE’s.

To make add my audio commentary onto my webste I had to copy a  code of tfrom the schools it folder  into the HTMl  this way the  audio could be sent to  the  right page on the website.

On the bottom of the page of the homepage you can find the audio player which allows you to  listen to the commentary. This was an important asset to use as it shows off my skills and what I can do. It also makes my portfolio easier to use and more professional.

Review Home – very colourful and bold which makes it a nice read and can also gather a lot of information from just your home page. I feel that it may look a little better if the writing. Other pages – The other pages are all very good but I feel that you may need to add a little more to a couple of sections for example the GCSE results. Images All of your images look good and have good meanings Colour Scheme - I like the colour scheme as it is really happy and makes me think of the sky which makes writing look easy to read. Navigation – it is a really good smile navigation system which is why I like it Other comments None

Testing

Improvements following feedback  The person who gave me feedback advised me that I could lay out the writing differently on the home page to make it look more interesting. To add a more information or details to some of my other pages for example on my gcse page. Overall they seemed pretty impressed by the web page they said that the coulor scheme reminded of the sky because of the blues and whites. They also liked the amount of information on the home page because they could learn a lot about me from it.

Review of my webpage

My original designs of my digital portfolio are different to my actual website because on the original designs I wanted a hyperlink that would take you to my actual document. I decided not to and to have the documents copied and pasted into tables because it is easier than having to keep opening up documents. A second reason is that the audience may not be able to load up the documents as they may be uncompatible with their machines. A similarity between my two designs is that they all have a navigation bar down the left hand side and across the top. I kept this because it would give the page a border and with a theme it would give it a creative and a colourful look. Navigation would also be easier After I had got my feedback back I noticed that they said it would be great if the pages weren’t all laid out the same as it looked boring. To solve this I decided that I would make the tables different sizes so that each page was consistent. Another comment that they made was to include more information on some of the pages especially the GSCE page. I then went and acted on this by adding some information on my views about my results and also when I did them and how I went around my revision. I could further improve my webpage by adding more colours to the pages. I would hope this would help to make the pages more attractive to the reader this can also make the pages more interesting to read. A second improvement I would make to my digital portfolio it would be to make an introduction page to my CV page to explain how I made it and how I made sure it met the criteria.

my final justification for the content

The purpose for me making a digital portfolio was to get me a job with an IT company. It is important that I show off my IT skills but also show me as person. I have achieved this by

Adding my CV, grades and an introduction all about me Crating a professional digital portfolio will all of the work that I

have created on the course. Showcase all of my skills Tested the portfolio and asked other for help and ideas

I’m really happy that I did this because not only do they get an insight into my work but also into me as a person. I have included many pages to my website these have included database (unit 10), hardware and maintaining hardware (unit 14) and bitmap and vector images (unit 6). These are the pages that showed off my IT skills the most because they show that I can create a database with forms and menus and add reports and query’s. Also that my unit 14 folder showed that I am capable of upgrading and maintaining the hardware.

The audience who could be my employers need to be impressed by my website. In order to do this I added a simple colour scheme of blue and white as anything to over the top would be too much. I’ve also made sure that every page is neat and tidy. This is the aspect I’m the most proud off because I’ve created a very professional portfolio which I hope will sell very well to my potential employers. I have made sure that the font is professional looking because if it was to fancy it would be distracting. I have tables on my website pages so that it keeps my work organised and neat. This prevents the page from being over crowded. I have made my writing formal because this portfolio could potentially get me job with the IT Company and I need to make sure it’s as professional as it can be. I also tested the portfolio on different systems and make sure that it worked properly with no spelling errors as that would have made my portfolio unprofessional.

Following the completion of the portfolio I asked someone to give me some feedback on my website. When I was handed my feedback I was pleased and surprised. I was pleased because they liked how the colour scheme reminded them of the blue sky as this

 © Pearson 2014 58

gave a relaxed look. However I was surprised when they said there was a lack of information on some of my pages in particular my GCSE page. I acted on this by adding an introduction to each unit page explaining the unit as well as a paragraph explaining about how I went around revising and completing my GCSE grades. Another comment that they made was the change the layout of the tables as the same look can be boring. I acted on this by making some of the tables landscape and some of them portraits that each page is then different in layout.

To make my website even better: 1. I would add more colour to my pages to spice them. 2. I would also add a section on how I made my digital portfolio

and on computer programming. 3. I would also try to use dreamweaver to make the webpages as

it would let me create more features and a better more professional layout.

4. I would also have a page on my work experience as I have a Saturday and holiday job in MacDonald’s

5. My next step is to add my commentary which I will record and add onto my homepage.

6. I will also have a look at monster the job site webpage to see if they have any tips .

All in all I’m very proud of my portfolio and how it looks and I’d like to think of my portfolio as my aid in helping me get a job in the real world.

Assessment comments

2A.P1 Yes A clear description of the target audience and purpose for the design of the portfolio given.

2A.P2

Yes The design document includes a clear timeline for the project, storyboard mapping out the layout and content with the required eight screens, a structure chart indicating navigation routes, and a list of ready-made assets, i.e. a mixture of text, images, audio and video assets. It was also clear where these assets will be used.

2A.P3

Yes The folder structure used demonstrates an awareness of purpose. Screen print of the folder shows that the portfolio content was saved in appropriate file formats, .html, .jpg and .mp3. The folders were also appropriately named. Testing demonstrated that the file formats were appropriate.

2B.P4

Yes Achieved; home page and section pages for each section created. The context page contained appropriate assets, comments to introduce the portfolio content and navigation links to the portfolio content. Each page included a video link to introduce the portfolio content which makes very good use of multimedia assets.

2B.P5

Yes Achieved with a variety of testing carried out including checking that the portfolio can be viewed on different system/ browsers i.e. Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. Appropriate action taken to ensure the portfolio is fully functional. End user recommendations also considered.

© Pearson 2014 61

2C.P6 Yes Achieved, explained two reasons why the portfolio is suitable for the intended audience and purpose.

2A.M1

Yes Detailed design documentation seen with a detailed storyboard of the layout and content of the required eight screens. Detailed structure chart that identifies complete navigation routes. Fully sourced table of ready-made assets identifying text, images, sound and video and where the assets were used/located in the portfolio. The design documentation is detailed and will allow someone else to visualise the completed portfolio. A detailed alternative design solution was also presented with a description of alternative styles, layout and assets.

2B.M2

Yes Achieved as the folder structure was logical and clear with suitable content in regards to the folder/files names and where the files are stored. The range of extracts gave a good overview of the achievements, demonstrating an awareness of the audience.

2B.M3

Yes Good evidence of further development of the portfolio seen, demonstrating an awareness of audience and the purpose. The context pages included clear explanations for the choice and content. The range of assets used was seen as suitable. The navigation and commentaries was also found to be consistent throughout the portfolio.

2B.M4

Yes Achieved; good range of tests carried out during the testing process, i.e. folder structure, page functionality, links work/open correctly, web pages are error free, effectiveness of pages. Tested the digital portfolio for usability i.e. user interface, navigation, content and style. The portfolio was also tested for functionality on another computer system/browser. Gathered and documented feedback from others and repaired the portfolio when required, acknowledged user comments when a change was suggested to show a good awareness of audience and purpose.

2C.M5

Yes Portfolio reviewed, good consideration given as to how well the portfolio addresses the needs of the intended audience and purpose. Feedback from end reviewer acknowledged and realistic and valid comments recorded. Feedback incorporated from end user into the review.

2A.D1

Yes Full justification of design choice seen with an explanation of how each asset enhances the user experience and how the navigation options makes the portfolio easy to use, also takes into account the intended needs of the audience.

2B.D2

Yes The portfolio was refined after the initial review and throughout the testing process; user testing was also acknowledged. Commentaries contextualise the content and the various assets enhanced the user experience. The result of the development and testing process made the portfolio easy to navigate and look professional.

2C.D3

Yes Achieved; with an evaluation of the final portfolio against the initial design documentation that considered the extent to which the portfolio met the needs of the audience and purpose explaining the rationale for any changes that were made. A variety of further potential improvements identified, some assisted by feedback from end reviewers.
