B E F IRST TO EXPERI ENCE A W H OLE NEW WO RLD OF EDUCATION
ENROL NOW TO RULE YOUR WORLD
1. What are the three most pressing issues that need attention in your electorate? Why?A vote for the Greens is a vote to hold both Labor and the Liberals accountable. The Greens believe Thomastown voters want a positive vision for the future one that holds both Liberal and Labor accountable for jobs, public transport, increased education, clean energy and improved health services.
2. What will you do for the electorate that your opponents will not?A vote for the Greens is a way for Thomastown voters to send a message to Labor and Liberal that there are people in the electorate who are sick of being taken for granted. A Greens vote is a statement that we urgently need a modern economy generating jobs for the future, more public transport, clean energy, better TAFE and education services, and better health services.
Thomastown votes Star Weekly spoke to Thomastown candidates Labor MP Bronwyn Halfpenny, Greens candidate Ian Williamson, Liberal candidate Nitin Gursahani and independent candidate Thomas Di Palma about the electorate and their policies.
1. What are the three most pressing issues that need attention in your electorate? Why?Our community is expecting nearly a doubling of the population in the next four years. The existing roads are choked and schools are already at capacity. Crime in newly built areas is epidemic. Investment in infrastructure, policing and community services is essential for this community to remain viable.
2. What will you do for the electorate that your opponents will not?Being an independent encourages me to work with other members of the legislative assembly to provide the quality outcomes and opportunities for our community. I will always show integrity by being transparent, honest and accountable. This is how I can truly represent the needs of our community.
IAN WILLIAmSONGREENS
THOmAS DI PALmAINDEPENDENT
1. What are the three most pressing issues that need attention in your electorate? Why?Creating employment must be the number one priority for the next state government. Ending Denis Napthines war on paramedics and fixing the crisis in health systems is also a priority. So too is restoring TAFE and building new schools such as a new primary school in Epping North and a new secondary school in Wollert.
2. What will you do for the electorate that your opponents will not?I propose to be a strong voice for the community within a Labor government that is all about putting people first - delivering the key infrastructure and services we need for a growing community like better local roads and public transport, new schools, and a better health system. I will work hard to support the creation of new local jobs in Melbournes north.
BRONWYN HALfPENNY LABOR
1. What are the three most pressing issues that need attention in your electorate? Why?Improving health services and lowering the cost of living to relieve financial pressure for families. The Liberals are reducing the cost of Zone 2 travel to the Zone 1 price and reducing the cost of water and electricity bills. Were improving road and rail infrastructure so residents can get where they need to on time.
2. What will you do for the electorate that your opponents will not? Were building a better Thomastown. Improving rail and road infrastructure such as duplicating Yan Yean Road. We are committed to improving local health services. An $18 million investment in community-based respite care and $98 million for a major expansion of the Northern Hospital will mean residents can receive first class health care close to home.

A Whittlesea resident and former radio host has started a local cancer support group.
Raymond Phillips is battling three different types of cancer but is more worried about his friends and other cancer sufferers who lack the support they need.
Im still able to do everything I need to do in a day, but maybe there are people who are having difficulties with their situation and need this sort of crutch to lean on.
He thought a social network would do the trick and asked the Whittlesea Community Network crew whether they could facilitate such a group.
WCN manager Barbara Ireland said the network was thrilled with the idea and set the wheels in motion to organise the groups inaugural meeting, which is 11.30am tomorrow
at the Whittlesea Township Community House in Church Street.
I hope Im not overstating the reason for the group, but its for people who need it, and I suppose these types of groups might give them that extra strength they need mentally, Mr Phillips said.
The 70-year-old former regional radio host of 25 years said many mature-age men didnt pay enough attention to their health.
People must walk around with their heads in a portable sand hole, he said.
Its about awareness. People need to realise that they should be seeing their doctor every 12 months.

Fanfares, glitter, fake tan and pom-poms will fill the Gold Coast Convention Centre later this month as thousands of competitors converge for the Australian All Stars Cheerleading Federation national titles. About 170 men and women from the Tullamarine-based Cheer Factor All Stars will head north for Australias largest cheerleading competition to perform a two-and-a-half-minute routine of high-energy tumbling, dancing and stunting. Head coach and director Sonia Roarty says the event closely resembles Hollywood flick Bring It On. Theres plenty of sparkles, glitter, big hair, and its loud and exciting, she said. Lexi Cottee

Before a social worker turned family life around, Sarah struggled to manage her 10-year-old sons violent outbursts and her fathers ill temperament.
The Doreen resident said her sons behavioural issues began manifesting when he was five.
Nathan had issues fitting in so we took him to a paediatrician to get a referral to the Royal Childrens Hospital. It was a doctor from their behavioural clinic who told us he has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism, Sarah (not her real name) said.
I couldnt take the iPad off him without him lashing out and, as he got bigger, he became worse and more aggressive.
To make matters worse, Sarah had similar issues with her father, who she took in to live with her partner and two sons while he sorted himself out.
Dad was foul-mouthed and ended up nicking off when I called the police on him, Sarah said.
To exact revenge he falsely accused Sarahs long-term partner of indecently touching her children, but in a twist of fate her contact with the police to smooth over the allegations allowed her to open up about her struggle with Nathan. Police referred her to the Thomastown-based Childrens Protection Society (CPS), which assigned her two social workers.
Within three months, we started to notice a difference, Sarah said.
Nathans medication was changed and Sarah was armed with a list of strategies to help manage his behaviour.
While her story is not an anomaly in Melbournes northern suburbs, her access to support isnt the norm.
Help turned life around
CPS chief executive Aileen Ashford said about 80 families were on a waiting list for the service.
Were completely stretched, she said. We need more investment into family violence services so we can provide ongoing support.
The CPS is one among a group of agencies calling for specific services to improve the lot of families and children in the outer northern suburbs.
Their Families on the Edge campaign is calling on all political parties in the run-up to the election to pledge at least $2.4 million for a three-year pilot project to collate data, fund education programs and provide every suburb in Whittlesea with a family engagement facilitator to help the most vulnerable.
