Master of ceremonies and workshop facilitator

Adjunct Professor

Debra Thoms FACN (DLF)

Debra Thoms is the Chief Executive Officer

of ACN. Her career in nursing, health

management and nursing leadership spans

over thirty years. Debra is inspired by the

impact of connectivity that nursing brings,

which she believes is critical to the practice of nursing. For even in the

highly technical and scientific environments nurses work in, she has

seen first-hand how the relationships created with patients through

face-to-face engagement and communication are vital to the provision of

excellent care. Her other areas of interest include the important role that

nursing plays in the health of our society, and the vital role culture and

leadership play in organisations. Debra is delighted to be your host and

workshop facilitator at NSW Matters.

Adjunct Associate Professor

Susan Pearce MACN

Adjunct Associate Professor Susan Pearce

is the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer at

NSW Health. Immediately prior to taking the

position, Susan was the Director of Operations

at Northern Sydney Local Health District where

she managed a large portfolio including acute health services, mental

health, public health and health promotion units, workforce, training and

education and Aboriginal health. Susan also has extensive experience

in both nursing and broader health workforce positions, having held the

position of Director of Workforce in the former Northern Sydney Central

Coast Area Health Service. Susan has practised as a nurse in a variety

of settings, including as a nurse manager, a Clinical Nurse Specialist

in intensive and coronary care and as the manager of a project to

implement the first nurse practitioner services in rural and remote NSW.

Michelle Stubbs MACN

and Jennifer Muir

Michelle has completed her Master of Nursing

(majoring in Education), Graduate Certificate in

Anaesthetics and Recovery Room Nursing and

Graduate Diploma of Nursing from UTS.  She

is the Director of Empower Nurse Education, is

also currently employed as a Clinical Nurse Educator for the University of

Newcastle and works alongside Jenny developing and implementing the

‘Surgical Liaison Nurse’ at John Hunter Hospital. 

Jenny is the Nursing Unit Manager of John Hunter Hospital’s Operating

Suite. After completing her Advanced Diploma of Government in 2009

she has chosen to focus her attention on patient centred excellence.

She is currently conducting research and implementing an imperative

service called ‘The Surgical Liaison Nurse’.

Wayne Varndell MACN

Wayne Varndell is the Clinical Nurse Consultant

at Prince of Wales Hospital Emergency

Department and NSW Branch President for

the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia.

Wayne has held various educational and

advanced practice roles in emergency nursing

and is an active academic within the field of emergency care and nursing.

His research interests include quality of care and illness experiences of

individuals presenting to the emergency department, the role of extended

and advanced nursing practice models of care, and pain and sedation

management of critically ill intubated patients in the emergency department.

He has received over $900,000 in research and project funding, and in

2014, was awarded Australasian Emergency Nurse of the Year.

Elizabeth Matters FACN

Elizabeth Matters works as a Cardiac Nurse

Educator and Registered Midwife in Sydney,

Australia. She has spoken at the ACN National

Nursing Forum 2014, the ICN Congress

2013 and the RCNA National Conference

2012 and will present a paper at the ICN

2015 Conference in Seoul. Her special interests are the professional

needs of early-career nurses, clinical education for bedside nurses and

international nursing partnerships.

Professor Mary Chiarella FACN

Mary’s career spans 40 years both in the

United Kingdom and Australia across a variety

of nursing services.

Mary is Professor of Nursing, Faculty of

Nursing & Midwifery, at the University of

Sydney. In 2003/04 she was the Chief Nursing Officer, NSW Health

Department and prior to that was the Foundation Professor of Nursing in

Corrections Health, with the University of Technology, Sydney. Mary has

provided her professional expertise to health services, organisations and

governments over the years. Mary’s particular research interests focus

on legal, policy and ethical issues in nursing and health care delivery.

She publishes and speaks nationally and internationally on her work.

Laurie Bickhoff MACN

Laurie Bickhoff is a cardiology nurse working

within NSW, Australia and was an Australian

College of Nursing 2012 Emerging Nurse

Leader. Laurie has presented at a number of

nursing conferences on the use of social media

within nursing and launched her own blog,

www.definingnursing.com, in 2014. In 2014, Laurie commenced her

honours research project, investigating moral courage demonstrated by

undergraduate nursing students. She is passionate about social media,

leadership and supporting nursing students and early career nurses.

Associate Professor Clair Ramsden

Associate Professor Clair Ramsden is the

Acting Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer,

NSW Health. Clair holds a substantive position

at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health

District as Director of Nursing and Midwifery

where she manages a large portfolio including,

workforce clinical training and education, Nursing Research and Practice

Development and patient transport. Clair has extensive experience

in nursing and leadership positions. Clair brings a strong and diverse

career experience with a depth of knowledge both within the nursing

profession and at a high level in broader health service management and

leadership.

Leadership in the Pacific presenter

Michele Rumsey FACN

Michele’s personal goal in her work as Director

of Operations and Development at the WHO

Collaborating Centre UTS is to improve

population health within the South Pacific

with leadership capacity building projects. In

her time as Director during a 10 year period

Michele has overseen projects totaling AU$18 million dollars. This

work includes being the project leader for numerous World Health

Organization, Western Pacific Region and South East Asian Region

projects. A core aspect of this work is building regional and global

partnerships and facilitating numerous regional meetings including a

WHO Summit for: Strategic Planning, Pandemic Preparedness, HRH,

and Leadership within the Western Pacific Region.
