There are numerous Pop-Up blockers on the Internet, we have used Yahoo’s as an example since it is one of the most com-mon. Generally Pop-Up blockers look the same and use the same commands. They install an icon on the toolbar that alerts you to a blocked site or to the prop-erties menu. If a customer is unsure whether they have blocker, ask them to look in this area for an icon.

How to Check For and/or Enable/Disable Pop-Up Blocker Software

After you find the icon you can access the properties menu by clicking the drop down arrow or by clicking your right mouse but-ton over their icon.

You can then usually enable or disable the blocker from this menu. Or select View Recently Blocked Pop-ups to see a quick list of the sites. If the sites www.ntreistax.com or http://ntreis.marketlinx.com are listed please con-tinue to the next step.

To add the site, select “Always Allow Pop-ups from…” within the menu.

If the sites are blocked it will appear in the “Sources of Recently Blocked Pop-Ups:” box. Select the sites and click on the “Allow” button. You should then see the site move to “Always Allow Pop-Ups From These Sources:” box. These steps should allow the sites if the customer is using Yahoo Pop-up Blocker, however, most blockers are fashioned in the same manner. Click “Close” and return to the browser.

Customer Can’t Connect to the Tax Site from NTREIS Listings. Here is a short checklist

A customer calls and reports that they get a “Page Cannot Be Displayed” message when they try and access the Tax site from the NTREIS Listings page. There are several different prob-lems that can cause this issue, we have a short checklist that might help you diagnose the issue for your customers.

Confirm there are no Pop-Up-Blockers en-abled. Some users may have more than one blocker loaded on their system. If they are enabled confirm that www.ntreistax.com and http://ntreis.marketlinx.com are allowed sites.

Second Step:

First Step:

Confirm the computer’s date and time are correct. If the computer’s date or time are incorrect, by more than eight hours, the Internet cookie file needed to access the site will not write to the hard drive.

www.ntreistax.com ntreis.marketlinx.com

Page 19: NTREIS Tax Support Reference Guide - North Texas Real Estate Info

Ask the customer if they have recently rebooted their system. If they have not have them do a complete shutdown and start-up of their system. Additionally, query the customer about other profiles that may exist on the computer (ie...other family members). Their profile may not be the administrator of the system.

Fifth Step:

Fourth Step:

Confirm the Cookie settings are as fol-lows: Check “Override automatic cookie handling”, “Accept” First party Cookies; and “Block” Third part Cook-ies. Please don’t forget to check “Always allow session cookies”.

Wireless Routers: If the customer uses a wireless router, please have them bypass the wireless router and connect directly to their ISP. To bypass the router have the customer remove the cable that leads from their connection point to their wireless router. If they have a cable modem a network cable will connect their modem to their router. If they connect via DSL, a cord will usually come from the wall to their wireless router. Have the customer remove this cord and connect it directly to their machine. The customer should then try to connect to the Internet and access the tax site. If they are able to connect to the tax site, if they are the necessary cookie will be written to their hard drive. Return the wires to their original configuration and the customer should now be able to access the site through their wireless router.

Sixth Step:

Third Step:

Check to make sure the Content Advisor is not turned on, if it is confirm the al-lowed sites are the same as in Step Two.

It is very important to remember when speaking to customers about their print settings that all computers are different. User’s may have software or updates loaded on their sys-tem which will alter how they see their print screen. These instructions are based on a basic computer set-up with a standard Microsoft Oper-ating System.

On the main Search Page have the customer enter the criteria for their search, for example Street Name, Zip Code, and/or Subdivision. They need to next select a property and in the “Selected Prop-erty” screen select click the “View Parcel Map” hyperlink

We have used Microsoft Paint as our default viewers since it is common to most Windows System.

The portion of the map you selected should now appear in MS Word. It is usually easier for a cus-tomer to print items from MS Word since most are familiar this program.

If the customer wishes to use a different tiff viewer, there are a number of free viewers on the Internet. We do not endorse any specific viewer, however, we have found that the Irfan Free Viewer: www.irfanview.com, has similar printing tools to Microsoft Paint. If they require a more advanced viewer with specific features such as background colors; suggest they search the Internet. Most advanced viewers require a charge so remind them to search carefully for one that fits their needs and price range

Troubleshooting Strategies There are several standard techniques that can be used to troubleshoot problems. Using your tools and docu-mentation is a good starting place. Once you have familiarized yourself with these materials, you can begin identifying the problem and testing the affected features to determine the exact cause. Problems can be caused by issues as diverse as incompatible hardware, loose connections, incorrect configurations, or other issues. You can use a variety of resources to isolate the problem and determine if it is a known issue with a docu-mented solution.

Start troubleshooting by gathering information. Develop a clear understanding of the symptoms and collect pertinent system information to understand the environment in which they occur. Under what conditions does the problem occur? Which aspects of the software control those conditions? Is the problem specific to an ap-plication, or is it specific to a subsystem (networks, video, and so on)?

Has what you are trying to do ever worked on this computer before? If so, something might have changed that may affect it. Have you changed hardware or installed new software? Has someone else been using the com-puter, and could that person have made changes you do not know about?

If this program or functionality has never worked on this computer, compare the setup and configuration on this computer with the same program on another computer to identify differences.

Identify the variables that could affect the problem. As you troubleshoot the problem, change only one of these variables at a time. If you must escalate your issue to a support provider, your detailed notes provide valuable information to the technician who is helping you solve your problem.

Reference materials, such as hardware and software installation records, notes about your configuration and problems experienced with it, and documentation provided with hardware and software products, can be valu-able troubleshooting tools.

The following are several troubleshooting techniques to help you isolate problems.

• Diagnose problems

• Follow the System Checklist

• Check to see if the problem is a common issue

• Make sure no physical connections are loose

• Isolate the source of the problem

• Consult technical support resources if needed

• Keep Records

• Keep Notes

• Refer to Documentation

• Fix Problems

Page 30: NTREIS Tax Support Reference Guide - North Texas Real Estate Info

• If there are any network connections, make sure they are all connected. If they are, restart the computer in case you have temporarily lost connection. Use the ping protocol to test whether client and server com-puters are connected.

• Even if you're not connected, restart your computers and make sure you still have the problem.

• Try a few tests of the affected feature to see if there are other problems you have not yet encountered. For more information about running test on features, see "Isolating the Source of the Problem" later in this chapter.

• Have you installed new hardware or software recently?

• Did the task ever work? What happened just before it stopped working? For example, was new soft-ware installed? Did the network crash? Did the computer crash?

• Are any files missing or have any been accidentally deleted?

• If you are troubleshooting an installation problem, examine your notes to see if you can identify where the problem might have occurred. Did you receive any error messages during the installation process?

• Can you reproduce this problem on a different computer that has the same hardware?

• If the problem is the result of a recent change to the system, undo that change.

• If an update installed from the Windows Update Web site fails to meet your expectations, restore the original files by running the Update Wizard Uninstall from the Tools menu.

Viruses and Error Messages

Check for viruses and see error message documentation. Many problems are related to unexpected errors or system failures. For example, the computer stalls, general protection faults occur, and so on.
