FIBRE-OPTICS DATA LINKSUltra supplies fibre-optic data links andcontact closures for core vibrationmonitoring and control rod positioningapplications and as backup datachannels to control rooms. Fibre-opticsignal transmission for processmonitoring and control has beenprogressively adopted in recent yearsfor critical applications such as safetyshut-down systems, where there arevery high requirements for dataavailability. NUCLEONICS Ultra’s strength lies in its ability tooffer end-to-end nucleonic systems,comprising flux detectors, mineral-insulated cables and instrumentation.Ultra has developed a completerange of neutron flux detectors foruse in reactor safety and indicationsystems and neutron flux instrumentsfor monitoring and protectionapplications in the nuclear industry.The instrumentation range includespulse counting, Campbell processing,log DC and linear DC measurements.These instruments are available asindividual items or as a complete fluxmonitoring system. Ultra’s nuclear-qualified products arerecognised for their quality, reliability,accuracy and longevity of performancein even the most severe environments.

NUCLEAR QUALIFIED SENSORSUltra has been supplying nuclearqualified temperature sensors,thermowells, transmitters andpressure transmitters for more thanthree decades and is recognised as aglobal leader in these technologies.Over 80% of all North Americanreactors rely exclusively on Ultratemperature sensors for criticalreactor coolant monitoring. Ultra’snuclear-qualified pressuretransmitters are used at over 20% ofUS nuclear power plants and itsproducts have been qualified for usein all of the leading reactortechnologies, including PWR, BWR,CANDU, APWR and ABWR. Ultra isthe world’s largest supplier ofnuclear-qualified resistancetemperature detectors (RTDs) andthermocouple temperature sensors.Most of the sensors can withstand20G’s and 300 Megarads (3MGy)Total Ionising Dose (T.I.D). They areavailable in various configurations,such as thermowell-mounted, strap-on, direct immersion, fast-timeresponse and atmospheric styles.

Ultra produces a wide variety ofnuclear-qualified thermowells invirtually any style or material. WhilstUltra’s standard thermowells arefabricated from stainless steel, othermaterials such as Monel, Inconel andHastelloy are regularly used. Ultraprovides a range of nucleartemperature transmitters, which canbe used with either RTDs orthermocouples. They are capable ofwithstanding up to 40 years ofbackground radiation of 10 Kilorads(100 kGy) T.I.D. The N7000 seriestransmitter is fully field-configurable,making it adaptable to virtually anyapplication. Ultra supplies one of thebroadest ranges of pressuretransmitters for nuclear-qualifiedapplications. Versions are offered forinstallations ranging from insidecontainment and harsh environmentto applications requiring only seismicqualification or commercial grade.Models are available for themeasurement of gauge, absolute or differential pressure. In addition Ultra holds multiple ASMEcertifications of authorisation fordesign and manufacture of pressureboundary products.

PLANT LIFE EXTENSION AND UPGRADESUltra provides solutions to the ageingand obsolescence issues faced in amature nuclear plant with a completerange of services to review, sustainand extend the I&C systems of theplant. Ultra’s solutions enable itscustomers to implement a strategywhich has nuclear plant safetyconsiderations at its heart, whilst stillsupporting the operator’s keybusiness drivers and addressing therisks arising from I&C obsolescence.Customers are provided with thecapability to optimise and implementa range of approaches, includingmaintenance, refurbishment andreplacement at system andcomponent levels.

Ultra has developed innovative designand manufacturing techniques tomanage the threat of obsolescenceand the long operational lifetimeswithin the nuclear industry. Ultracontinually monitors and assesses thestatus of operating plants andimplement multiple strategies toextend their operational life.

Ultra has been a pioneer within thenuclear industry in utilising field-programmable gate array (FPGA)technology as a cyber-secure “logic engine” for reactor protectionsystems and designs much of theanalogue and digital circuitry inhybrids to achieve high reliability andprovide obsolescence proofing. Theuse of hybrid technology removes thethreat of tin whiskers.

Independent safety assessmentIEC 61508 represents best practice forsafety-related electrical, electronic andprogrammable electronic systems. Itrequires the use of independent safetyassessments. Through its knowledgeand experience, Ultra is able toprovide confidential, independentsafety assessment services. The Grouphas suitably qualified and experiencedpersonnel and domain experts, centredon instrumentation and control, – bothhardware and software. Ultra providesimpartial safety assessments ofprocesses, systems or organisations, toestablish if the safety requirements forthe system are appropriate andadequate for the planned applicationand that the system satisfies thosesafety requirements.

Systems integration Ultra provides a systems integrationservice to customers, through adedicated and highly specialised teamof programme managers, engineers,on-site manufacturing services andpartnering across an establishedsupply chain in the nuclear sector.Ultra’s extensive experience in thespecification, design and supply ofmission and plant-critical systemsprovides a pedigree for the Group’sworldwide services.
