The Importance of Registering in OLMC Parish

Registering in one’s local parish is a common practice for Catholics in the United States. Why? Because, as a child of God, every baptized person belongs to the Church, the “family of God” that is made visible in a local parish. Registering in your parish is an important step to becoming an active member in the local church community. Registration brings with it a concrete relationship with the Church and a strong support of the community. It is an act of committing oneself in the concrete aspects of faith: we are not isolated children of God, we are called to interact with others, to belong to a family of faith. Otherwise, our faith would be “uprooted”, not able to grow and bear fruit. Registering in your parish is about belonging, about claiming this place as your church, your home; and, in return, allowing this place to claim you.

Benefits of Parish Registration:

1. It offers spiritual benefits. After registering with a parish, it is more likely that a person will participate fully in the life of the parish and find a spiritual family. Parishioners will find many opportunities to grow in love of God and of neighbor, and to celebrate their faith with others. Families will feel less alone and more supported in times of joy and in times of sorrow. 2. It provides faith education for the whole family. Children will receive Religious Education, as well as parents. All will be able to prepare for the sacraments: Baptism, First communion, Confirmation, Marriage, etc. Registration allows proof of sacramental participation. If a person receives any of the sacraments in a parish, registration provides a clear and straightforward way to keep track of this information. Conveniently, proof of sacramental participation can easily be passed from one parish to the next if one moves. 3. It demonstrates your involvement. Registration in the parish provides an opportunity to participate in and become an established member of the local parish community. This has a variety of benefits that extend beyond participation at weekly Mass: - you will have the opportunity to help organize and promote the celebration of traditional religious feasts and devotions. - you will be eligible for sponsor/godparent validation. - you will become acquainted with other parishioners and make friends who share the same faith and desire to follow the concrete teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. 4. Registering also helps the parish maintain communication with its parishioners. In addition to bulletins and Mass announcements, you will be able to receive on your cell phone the text messages or reminders that the priests or staff send on special occasions. So, you can feel more like a part of the parish community when you receive important information right when needed. 5. It demonstrates your financial commitment. Providing regular offerings at the weekly Mass by using the offering envelopes after registration demonstrates a commitment to the Church. In addition, for tax return purposes, all your donations will be summed up at the end of the year and you will receive a tax deduction. It is important to emphasize, however, that registering at the parish does not require a parishioner to give financial contributions.
