MEDBALL 2012 with special guests…
The student doctor com-munity of NUI Galway, came out in force to welcome themselves back to another college semester this week. The introductory evening, organised by the Medical Society, promised the obligatory few wise words and of course, the traditional wine and cheese!
Presentations were made by those who had gone before, to help students get their bearings, and certainly, the tricks of the trade and secrets to avoiding the
wrath of certain professors were duly passed on!
Chat was aplenty and those who were far from home were made to feel at home, with students from as far afield as Cana-da, the US and Malaysia!
The Medical soci-ety is proudly sponsored by Bank of Ireland, The Cellar Bar , O’Briens Off Licences, the Medical Protec-tion Society, and ProMed.

As a result of a more integrated and clinically relevant curricu-lum in addition to pre intern clinical education, junior doc-tors are much better prepared to do their job unlike 15 years ago, ‘the see one-do one-teach on’ dogma that was not satis-factory.

The 17th NUIG Undergradu-
ate Research Day took place on the
19th of October in CSI and it was a
great success. Professor McCarthy
once again organised the event with
the help of the Undergraduate Re-
search Committee and MedSoc.
The Day comprised of over
60 presentations, both oral and poster
involving research across a wide varie-
ty of disciplines within the University.
It is to the great credit to all the stu-
dents that this research day was of
such a high standard. The exercise of
formatting a research proposal, seek-
ing funding, performing the research
work, and ultimately disseminating it
initially by presentation is a wonderful
discipline, and is part of the research
strategy encouraged by the school,
college and University particularly at
these undergraduate years.
Guest Speakers on the day
included Dr Ruth Gilmore, Consultant
Haematologist, Caption John Flanagan,
airline pilot who spoke about Risk
Management in Medicine, and Profes-
sors Kathy Murphy and Declan
Devane, who spoke about Collabora-
tive Research. The presentations were
followed by a drinks reception organ-
ised by MedSoc in the Common room
in CSI.
Congratulations is in order to
every student who presented their
work on the day, but special congratu-
lations are needed for the three over-
all winners. Fiona Nolan, 4MB, was
the winner of the James P. Murray
Memorial Gold Medal. Louise Lyons,
3MB, won the best Basic Science Oral
Presentation and Aoife Murray, 3MB,
won the best Clinical Poster Presenta-
tion.
These three students will now
go forward to present their work in
ISCOMS Conference in Groningen in
the Netherlands in June 2013.
