I have seen my students become much more engaged as a result of using the
equals math materials. Using the manipulatives in various stations is very
motivating for the students. The suggestions for ways to differentiate various
activities has been very helpful and has allowed for all learners to feel success in
the activities.School A

My students now have a structured math program that has ready made lesson
plans, worksheets and a wealth of manipulatives.
As a teacher, I have the confidence to teach from the prepared program and do
not have to prepare everything from scratch myself. This allows me to create
additional resources that will increase the engagement and understanding of my
students.
The program has introduced different strategies, games and manipulatives that I
have never used before. It has shown me that my students can receive numeracy
instruction which is very different from what happens in a typical classroom but is
also valuable.
In reflection of my own teaching practices, it has challenged me to get out of mycomfort zone and try new things for my kids. It also made me think about ways to
make sure all the activities in my classroom are age appropriate . I have begun to
look for numeracy links in everyday activities so my students can generalize the
skills they have learned.

My students enjoyed the wide variety of
manipulatives and tools that accompany
the Equals program. Having these
resources allowed the students to be
engaged for longer periods of time as well
allowed the same concept to be introduced
in a variety of ways without students feeling
like they were doing the same thing over
and over again.
My students saw themselves as successful as
they were able to participate in lessons at
their level and express their learning in
meaningful ways.

Students completed open ended
problems in both classroom testing
situations. We used a combination ofthe writing process approach (to grow
better math writers) and the
independent response situation, in
which students must apply good
practices to producing their best
responses under test conditions.

Students are more engaged, it has been easy to
assess where students are and where to gofrom there.
Students pick up on concepts quicker than
before using the program. They like relating back to real life using the
posters, they like using the I-pad or smart
board as an extension of the learning.

These two photos are of my students working on the objective of
equal in chapter 2. It was a bit of a difficult concept for them.
They really understood zero and more, but equal was different.
They loved using the food models and then we made soup as partof our life skills program, and measured one scoop per bowl to
show equal. Then we did 2 scoops in one bowl and one in
another, to show not equal.
