Dear future students,You are deciding to select the study of nursing care, the study, which will qualify you for professional performance of nursing care, give you efficient skills for communication with both patients and colleagues; and at the same time enable you to retain compassionate and ethical attitude towards the ill and the healthy, as that is precisely what they expect of you. Expectations and requirements of the profession are increasing, challenges are becoming increasingly serious, and it seems mere words of thanks and grateful look often replace material remuneration.

Medical science (and nursing as its integral part) have progressed rapidly in the recent decades. Along with their progress, they face growing social, psycho-logical, morally-ethical and economic problems, which are on the rise due to the discrepancy between the increased capacities of the profession and the limited capacities of every society. The proportion and division of work among doc-tors and registered nurses and health care experts has been changing as well. Strict boundaries in the division of work are becoming more loose, duties and responsibilities of individual groups are being intertwined. Without teamwork it is practically impossible to succeed in any medical field.

Therefore, the health care professional has to be properly educated in order to meet the above-mentioned challenges, to master them and to act for the ben-efit of the patient. The College of Nursing in Celje started operating relatively recently and before that, no undergraduate study of nursing was available in this region. The founding of the college in 2009 and its operation since then has enabled the students to study in their home environment, and adequately edu-cated nursing care professionals to local health centres. With the cooperation of many experts from different fields, we try to create studies, that are a synthesis of high-quality theoretical education, practically applicable clinical training, and an introduction to scientific and research work. From the beginning of our col-lege, we have been making connections with related institutions in Slovenia and abroad and facilitating an exchange of knowledge within a wider geographical area to our students and teachers.

We are a young and relatively small college, which enables us to flexibly change work methods in accordance with any new requirements and to adapt the study process to the needs of our students. We are convinced that with your active participation we will constantly improve and upgrade the quality of our studies to the satisfaction of all participants of this process. We look forward to seeing you in our classrooms and beside patients in autumn.

The dean Gorazd Voga Ph.D., assistant professor

Speech of the directress Upon establishing College of Nursing in Celje in 2009 the Regional Study Centre Celje followed its fundamental mission to establish higher education institutions and develop study pro-grammes adjusted to the needs and develop-ment plans of our regional area.

College of Nursing in Celje was founded upon the initiative of the General Hospital Celje, the third biggest hospital in Slovenia, and the initiative of the Secondary School of Medicine Celje. There were many reasons which justified the establish-ing of the College of such kind; among them lack of graduated nurses in various fields of nursing, the expected growth of such needs in the future and the fact that the graduate students will be highly employable due to a well-established net of medical institution in the region.

College of Nursing in Celje has made a good name for itself in the last three years of its operation. It has become recognisable not only locally but in a wider Slovenian territory as well. Through its quality education, active international activities and applicative research-developmental projects the College is following mission and vision as de-termined upon its establishment.

However, the College is still in its initial phase of its development path. As its founders we will support it and cooperate effectively and crea-tively in realisation of its ambitious plans. By doing this we want to contribute to achieving numerous positive effects that quality higher education brings in our local area, a wider re-gion of Slovenia and internationally as well.

ROK UŠEN, the student:I like the study at this college because lectures are performed one after another, so we the

students can really focus only on one study subject at a time and we can take the exams within two or three weeks after the lectures have been finished. Such system is more

friendly for employed students since we have to adjust our job and other responsibilities apart from the study. It is my big wish to work in health care system – especially in

emergency department of medical help. This study will enable my wish to come true. Shorty, I will describe this study as interesting, demanding and a good experience and test for me.

KATJA SIMLER, the student:I particularly like the fact that I can study although I’m employed. Tidiness and good equipment of the rooms designed for exercises give us even more motivation for study. Accessibility and kindness of the staff in student affairs office, and of course professors, mean a lot to me. It’s my goal after graduation to expand my knowledge and transfer it to younger generations, to provide medical care at a much higher level and to be promoted at work. I can describe the study with three words: interesting, accessible, flexible.

About Slovenia and Celje

Education

Celje

What others think about us

VERONIKA ČATER, the student:What I like at College of Nursing in Celje the best is good communication among the teachers and the students. The structure of exercises and lectures, the pace, logical and clear explanation are very important for students. I think a job as registered nurse is beautiful, caring and dynamic which incorporates a lot of care for a human and thus it can bring a lot of personal satisfaction. After graduation I expect to find a proper job where I could perform nursing care and maintain dignity of patients. With three words I would describe this study as demanding, interesting and quite instructive.

The Republic of Slovenia lies at the heart of Europe, where the Alps and the Mediterranean meet the Pannonian plains and the mysterious Karst.

In Slovenia, the sun shines approximately 2,000 hours per year. And there is plenty of snow in winter. The average temperatures are -2°C in January and 21°C in July. Green is the dominant colour. There are many woods and forests in Slovenia – covering more than half of the country – and numerous preserved and protected plant and animal species.

The country is also known for its great wines and delicious traditional food.

Slovenia strongly supports the idea of construction of a genuine European area of knowledge and strives to implement measures supporting equal opportunities, school success, mobility in gener-al, higher education and vocational education and training, language learning, educational technologies and distance education, academic and professional recognition of qualifications and development of undergraduate and the moderni-sation of postgraduate studies.

Over the last fifteen years higher education in Slovenia has under-gone several legislative and struc-tural changes, rapid institutional development and a significant in-crease in student numbers and be-came also interesting and desired country for many foreign students and high school pupils.

The second largest town in Štajerska region is Celje, once the seat of the Counts of Cilli, an influential aristocratic dynasty from the 15th century. The town's glorious past is reflected in the ruins of the mighty castle, once the largest in Slovenia. Today, Celje is one of Slovenia’s most dynamic and quickly developing towns, which hosts, among other events, an an-nual International Trade Fair, the largest business and trade fair in the south-east Europe.

Celje is also a good starting point for a visit to the Šaleška and Savinjska Valleys. In the lower Savinjska Valley, hop cul-tivation has been one of the main agricultural activities since the 19th century, while the upper part of the Valley is partic-ularly interesting as a developing tourist destination: it is the starting point for mountain hiking excursions in the Savinjska Alps. The Šaleška Valley is known for the Gorenje Company, which is based in the town of Velenje.

Duška Drev, lecturer, assistant director for nursing care, Psychiatric hospital VojnikI personally have been cooperating with the College since its establishment. In our hospital clinical training is performed in the field of nursing care for the third-year students. We gained the title of ‘teaching’ hospital in 2009 and can provide several qualified mentors who are responsible for 1 or 2 students simultaneously. Such mentorship role contributes to development of this professional field and to a better organisation, efficient quality of work and to a greater satisfaction of patients and employees.

Hilda Maze, M.Sc., lecturer, assistant director for nursing care, General Hospital CeljeOperation of College of Nursing in Celje is of great importance for General Hospital Celje since it presents a development basis of our employees. There are several qualified professionals in our hospital who are at the same time incorporated in pedagogical process of the College. This way our hospital transfers its extensive experience and knowledge to students. Registered nurses are involved in education process in clinical environment where they upgrade their existing knowledge. In such process a patient benefits the most and is assured with quality and safe nursing care. We are aware that we are included in education process of our future colleagues and registered nurses who will perform nursing care for us.

Franci Vindišar, PhD medicine, assistant, professional director, General Hospital CeljeAn integral good quality health service is one of the most relevant priorities and activities which we aim to achieve daily in General Hospital Celje. We are aware of the fact that well-qualified professional staff at all levels in hospital is necessary to achieve such goal. We are certain that incorporating education processes in the local environment is an excellent method how to gain good professional staff who fosters positive, caring and responsible attitude to their work. A well-established method of cooperation including active incorporation of individual professionals from General Hospital in Celje into the edu-cation processes at College of Nursing in Celje enables an effective transfer of theoretical knowledge into everyday experi-ence and practice, with a common goal of quality care for our sick and injured patients. Bearing this in mind we in General Hospital Celje are certain that our cooperation with College of Nursing in Celje has a bright future and such cooperation shall enable operating synergy of both institutions.

Bojana Mazil Šolinc, the directress of Dom ob Savinji Celje, Home for the ElderlyDom ob Savinji Celje is an institution providing social safety for elderly people and it is a ‘teaching’ institution of College of Nurs-ing in Celje as well. Students perform clinical training in our institution where they can acquire skills and knowledge in the field of nursing care of elderly people. At the same time they can also get to know a vivid offer of services and programmes designed for elderly people; daily care for elderly, daily care at home of elderly people, assistance and help to families in their homes and distant help. College of Nursing in Celje offers a wide range of professional meetings and other forms of lifelong learning and education which are attended by our professional staff in the field of nursing care. We are really pleased with our cooperation with the management of the College and their effort to create good quality and ef-ficient organisation of clinical training. This is the way to meet and get to know our future professional staff as well. We wish all the best to College of Nursing in Celje on its road to success.

Majda Koren and Gordana Drimel, the directress and deputy directress for nursing care in Dom upokojencev Šmarje pri Jelšah, Home for the ElderlyWhen College of Nursing in Celje was established, located in our close neighbourhood, we got an opportunity to cooperate in education system in the form of performing clini-cal training which enables integration of theoretical knowledge with practice. Students from the College will participate with their services of nursing care even in the field of homes providing social safety services for elderly people, thus they will become our future colleagues. We consider our role in this process seriously and with responsibil-ity. Our Home for Elderly in Šmarje pri Jelšah has created a firm cooperation with College of Nursing in Celje and we are really satisfied to be part of education process as well. We would like to give thank to the management of the College for our good cooperation and we wish you very successful work in the future.
