New Resources for Nutrition Educators BOOK Nutrition for Sports and Exer- cise, Second Edition. Dunford M, Doyle J. 2012. Wadsworth-Cengage Publishing, 20 Davis Dr, Belmont, CA 94002. Paperback book, 602 pp, $297.00, ISBN: 978-1-111-57828-2. This book integrates nutrition and exer- cise physiology principles, emphasizing scientic reasoning and examining re- search studies to illustrate the evidence for current nutritional recommendations. Wadsworth-Cengage This resource blends nutrition sci- ence principles with exercise physiol- ogy in a concise, clear approach that is particularly suitable for college- level courses. Basic nutrition princi- ples expand into more complex metabolic principles of nutrition that include the biochemical framework necessary for students to grasp the connection between nutrition and ex- ercise performance. It is designed for an upper-level course such as a sports nutrition course, an exercise physiol- ogy course, or an interdisciplinary course for nutrition, sports, or coach- ing majors. The text would have broad appeal in an interdisciplinary course open to other majors. The 13 chapters move from intro- ductory information to individual chapters addressing energy measure- ment, energy systems, macronutri- ents, water and electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals. Following the presenta- tion of individual nutrients, broader topics include nutrition applications related to exercise and physical perfor- mance. The chapter on diet planning emphasizes the importance of food sources of nutrients with a scienti- cally balanced discussion on the use of nutritional supplements. The chapter addressing weight and body composition is equally balanced in the discussion of body composition, health, physical per- formance, and the challenges of var- ious competitive sports relative to body composition and expectations of athletes, coaches, and the public. An impressive chapter on disordered eating and eating patterns in ath- letes includes relevant case studies, discussions, and research-based dis- cussion of the challenges athletes face to achieve peak performance while preserving healthy eating and exercise patterns. The nal chapter integrates diet, exercise, and health concerns relevant to ag- ing athletes who face the same health challenges of chronic dis- eases and conditions related to life- style choices. The structure of each chapter in- cludes a learning plan and pretest and posttest questions. Figures, charts, tables, and photographs are extensive in each chapter. Spotlights discuss a single concept in greater de- tail. Case studies and application exer- cises distributed throughout each chapter assist students in translating facts into practice. Each chapter in- cludes The Internet Caf e, with website information and references providing credible sources for a variety of topics. Extensive peer-reviewed reference lists are provided at the end of each chapter. The depth of the references and focus on research are particularly noteworthy. Excellent support resources are available from the publisher, includ- ing interactive teaching and learning tools, slides, an interactive e-book, test banks, and instructor support ma- terials. The text can be easily inte- grated with a companion nutrient analysis software product that tracks nutrition as well as physical activity data. The text would be a useful refer- ence for dietitians interested in prac- ticing sports nutrition, and would be a helpful resource for coaches or teachers who may serve as athletic coaches in secondary school or college settings.
