Primary and secondary schools all over the Philippines will be observing the National Nutrition
Month or Buwan ng Nutrisyon next month. According to the National Nutrition Council
NNC!" the theme #or this year$s celebration is Timbang iwasto sa tamang nutrisyon at
ehersisyo Proper weight through right nutrition and exercise!.
%n a statement"Assistant &ecretary o# 'ealth and NNC (xecutive )irector Maria*Bernardita +.
,lores said that this theme emphasi-es the problem o# obesity among ,ilipinos. &he noted that
among adults / years old and above" the prevalence o# overweight and obese ,ilipinosincreased #rom 01.12 in 0334 to 40.02 in /04.
+his year$s nutrition month has two main ob5ectives6
0! +o increase awareness on the role and importance o# proper nutrition and physical activity in
the prevention o# overweight and obesity among the general public.
! +o encourage ,ilipinos to ma7e positive decisions towards consumption o# healthy diets andbe physically active to prevent non*communicable diseases as a result o# overweight and obesity
NNC stressed that obesity is a ma5or ris7 #actor to non*communicable diseases such as cancer"
diabetes" and cardiovascular diseases. +he agency added that despite the rising number o# obese
,ilipinos" undernutrition underweight" stunting and wasting! remains a lingering problem as
well. +hus" the country is #aced with the so*called double burden o# malnutrition" the agencysaid.
+he national nutrition month is celebrated every 8uly as mandated by Presidential )ecree 930"
the same law that became the basis #or the creation o# the NNC in 03:9. %t must be noted that
during that time" then*President ,erdinand Marcos had both executive and legislative powers.

Correct weight through right nutrition and exercise! aims to ma7e people aware about how they
can prevent obesity. +his will be done by providing them with adeuate in#ormation.
8uly o# each year is designated National Nutrition Month by virtue o# Presidential )ecree No.930 signed into law in 03:9. %n /09" the campaign #ocused on disasters and their e##ect on
nutrition among ,ilipinos.
Assistant &ecretary o# 'ealth and NNC executive director Maria*Bernadita ,lores explained that
the number o# ,ilipinos su##ering #rom excessive weight has been increasing through the years.
,rom 0334$s 01.12" the prevalence o# overweight ,ilipinos rose to 40.02 in /04. %n #act"
according to the thNational Nutrition &urvey NN&! conducted by the ,ood and Nutrition

=besity has not only a##ected adults but also children. NN& also #ound that overweight and
obesity prevalence among children is ;2" while #or ,ilipino teenagers" it is .42.
+his" besides existing undernutrition" leaves the Philippines with a problem o# double burden

According to the ,N?%" the prevalence o# obesity may be attributed to high and #ast living
where li#estyle is sedentary" #ast #oods are abundant" and planning and preparation o# nutritious

NNC hopes that the theme this 8uly will encourage ,ilipinos to ma7e better decisions regardingtheir health.

in#ormed about the nutritional values o# the #ood they consume. %n addition" these nutritious #ood
should be accessible and cheap.
%t is important to have a community that promotes exercise and other physical activities.
