    the NWCA/CliffKeen Naonal Dual Meet Championship this

    eek in Minneapolis.The tournament begins Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) inside Williams

    ena on the campus of Minnesota. Iowa will be the No. 2 seed

    d face No. 7 Cornell in the quarterfinals at 8 p.m. (CT).

    Other tournament parcipants -- with seeds -- include top-

    Missouri, No. 6 Virginia Tech., and No. 8 Illinois.

    e Hawkeyes have competed at the NWCA Naonal Duals tour-

    ment 18 mes and own a 69-11-3 all-me record. Iowa has

    on the tle six mes (1992, 1995, 1996, 2008, 2009, 2010),

    aced second three mes (1994, 1997, 1998), third seven mes

    990, 1993, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2012), fih once (2007) and sixth

    ce (2006).

    AWKEYES VS. THE FIELD

    Mike Evans is ranked No. 3 at 165 pounds. Should Iowa meet

    lahoma State or Minnesota this weekend, Evans will have anportunity to avenge his only two losses of the season.

    Bobby Telford is 15-3 this season, with each loss coming to a

    ester in the tournament field (No. 2 Tony Nelson, No. 3 Alan

    logaev, No. 13 Peter Capone).

    AMOS, ST. JOHN AMONG HODGE CONTENDERS

    The Hawkeyes are 10-1 this season in duals against ranke

    ponents. Iowa defeated No. 17 Virginia, 26-12; No. 23 Le

    anked No. 2 at 133 pounds, junior Tony Ramos has scored a team-high 96

    ual points this season. He is 20-0 overall, 4-0 against ranked opponents, and

    wns a career dual record of 49-1. Ramos pinned three of his last four op-onents, the excepon being a 9-0 major decision over No. 3 A.J. Schopp of

    dinboro. He has scored bonus points in 18 of his 20 wins, including nine pins,

    enior Mark Ballweg owns a career record of 43-5 compeng at 141 pounds.

    ntering his senior season, he had recorded five major decisions in 55 career

    MOUNT ST. JOHN

    nior Derek St. John, rated No. 1 at 157, is 20-0 this season with two pins, six

    pponents, including a pair of wins over top five opponents (No. 4 Joey Napoli,

    0; No. 5 Dylan Alton, 4-3). He owns a career dual record of 43-3 and an over-

    l career record of 65-9.

    VANS MOVES UP TO NO. 3

    ophomore Mike Evans has climbed to No. 3 in the naonal polls, the high-

    st naonal ranking of his career. Evans moved up a spot from No. 4 followings 9-6 win over No. 2 Robert Kokesh on Feb. 10. Evans is 5-2 this year against

    nked opponents, including wins over No. 2 Nick Heflin (Ohio State), No. 11

    an Yates (Michigan), No. 4 Ma Brown (Penn State), No. 8 Jordan Blanton

    Evans is 15-2 overall. He opened the season 2-0 while compeng at 165, but

    ass he has gone 13-2 with two pins, two technical falls and five major deci-

    ons.

    HREE WITH AN EYE ON FOUR

    enior Ma McDonough is a three-me NCAA finalist. He won NCAA tles in

    010 and 2012, and finished runner-up in 2011. With a top eight finish at the

    013 NCAA tournament, McDonough would become the 18th four-me All-

    merican in school history.

    With a trip to the NCAA finals he would join Ed Banach, Duane Goldman

    nd Lincoln McIlravy as the schools only four-me NCAA finalists. A third na-

    onal tle would make McDonough the seventh wrestler in school history to

    arn three NCAA Championships (Ed Banach, Tom Brands, Barry Davis, Lincoln

    cIlravy, Joe Williams, Jim Zalesky).

    URAK EVENS OUT IN B1G DUALS

    eshman Nathan Burak improved to 4-4 in Big Ten duals when he topped Ca-

    b Kolb of Nebraska, 3-1, in sudden victory on Feb. 10. Six of Buraks eightonference opponents were naonally ranked. He earned victories against No.

    TELFORD TURNS THE CALENDARSixth-ranked Bobby Telford has put togeth-

    er a four-match winning streak since drop-

    ping 3-of-4 matches in the month of Janu-

    ary. Telford started February with a 9-2 win

    over No. 17 Jon Gingrich of Penn State on

    Feb. 1. He then pinned Illinois Chris Lopez

    for his fih fall of the season, scored a 6-2

    decision over Nebraskas Spencer Johnson,

    and earned a 13-2 major decision over No.

    20 Ernest James (Edinboro).

    MCDONOUGH CHASES HISTORY

    Senior Ma McDonough has four pins

    this season and a career total of 39. He

    scored nine falls as a freshman, 14 as a

    sophomore and 12 as a junior. He is five

    falls from matching Chuck Yagla (44) for

    10th on the all-me career falls list. Ed

    Banach owns the school record with 73.

    Terry Brands sits at No. 6 with 48 and Tom

    Brands ranks No. 8 with 46.

    HAWKEYES WIN BIG TEN DUAL TITLEIowa captured its fih Big Ten regular sea-

    son tle in the last six years when it de-

    feated Nebraska 31-7 Feb. 10 at Carver-

    Hawkeye Arena. Their perfect conference

    record marked the fih me in six seasons

    the Hawkeyes finished the Big Ten regular

    season with an undefeated mark.

    HAWKEYE WRESTLING HISTORY

    Iowas overall dual meet record is 925-

    220-31 (.799) in 102 seasons. The Hawk-

    eyes have won 23 naonal tles and 34

    Big Ten tles. Iowas 51 NCAA Champions

    Tom BrandsHead Coach (University of Iowa, 1992)

    Three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, TomBrands, is in his seventh

    season as head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. A 1996Olympic gold medalist and member of wrestlings Hall of Fame,Brands is only the eighth wrestling coach at the University of Iowa.The former Hawkeye wrestler was a four-time All-American and three-time national champion (1989-92) at Iowa. He has a 130-11-1 (.919)overall and 51-5 (.911) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa, and a 147-31-1 (.824) career mark.

    In six full seasons as Iowas head coach, Brands has led the Hawk-eyes to three NCAAand Big Ten teamtitles, crowning seven NCAAchampions, 10 Big Ten champions and 34 All-Americans. Iowa hashonored 34 academic all-Big Ten honorees, including a school-record10 in 2010-11. The Hawkeyes have qualified 53 wrestlers for the NCAAChampionships in the last six years, sending the entire 10-man lineup

    n 2009-10. Iowa has also won four of the lastfive Big Ten regular season titles.During Brands tenure, Iowa set school records for longest dual unbeaten (84) and winning streaks (69),

    ongest dual road unbeaten (51) and winning streaks (44), most Carver-Hawkeye Arena victories (11) andmost dual shutouts (8).

    Iowa also made another entry in the record books, setting the national collegiate dual meet attendanceecord of 15,955 when it hosted Iowa State Dec. 6, 2008, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The previous record of5,646 was set Feb. 1, 2002, when Minnesota hosted Iowa at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The Hawk-yes won the Iowa State dual, 20-15. Iowa has led the nation in attendance in each of Brands six seasons,etting an NCAAall-time attendance average of 9,014 in 2011-12.

    Brands was named 2008 NWCACoach of the Year after leading the Hawkeyes to theirfirst NCAAteamtle since 2000 and theirfirst Big Ten teamtitle since 2004. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in008, 2009 and 2010, becoming thefirst coach in conference history to earn the honor in three consecutiveeasons.

    Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons (2005-06), recording a 17-20ual mark. In hisfirst season with the Hokies, Brands led the teamto the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast

    Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-recordfive wrestlers qualifyor the NCAAChampionships. During his tenure, Virginia Tech crownedfive ACC champions and had twoAll-Americans. Senior heavyweight Mike Faust was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year.

    Prior to taking the helmat Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons (1993-004). He helped the Hawkeyes to a 177-27 dual record, seven NCAAand eight Big Ten titles, whilerowning 23 NCAAchampions, 73 All-Americans and 36 Big Ten champions. He was named the National

    Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000.In 2004, he was one of three coaches for the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, participating in

    Athens. Brands also served as assistant coach for the 2002 and 2003 U.S. Freestyle World Teams, earningreestyle Coach of the Year honors fromUSAWrestling both years. He was also a member of the U.S.oaching staff at the 2001 World Championships, and has coached a number of other U.S. teams in inter-ational competition.As a competitor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, GA. He

    lso won a gold medal at the 1993 World Freestyle Championships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. National titles (1993-96)nd made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams (1993-96). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tomwasamed 1993 USAWrestling Athlete of the Year, the 1993 John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler and993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year. He was inducted into wrestlings Hall of Fame in 2001.

    Brands was a four-time All-American at Iowa (1989-92). During his Hawkeye career, he won three NCAAtles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAAChampionships. Also a three-time Big Tenhampion, Brands won 95 percent of his matches at Iowa. His career mark of 158-7-2, included an unde-eated season in 1991 (45-0).

    The Sheldon, Iowa, native was born April 9, 1968. He earned his B.S. degree in physical education from

    owa in 1992. He and his wife, Jeni, have three children, Madigan, Kinsee and Tommy.
