We have always been an authentic, ethical, organic health and beauty brand. Unlike many other brands who have jumped on the ‘natural bandwagon’, we began more than 30 years ago as a natural ‘apothecary’, created by Romy Fraser – a former teacher with a passion for holistic health, beauty and wellbeing – offering a range of natural skin and body care, herbal remedies and essential oils.

Where It All BeganWe opened our doors on December 4, 1981 in Neal’s Yard, a once forgotten corner of Covent Garden, in the heart of central London.

Just like our shops today, the original store was fitted out with reclaimed materials.

Where We Are NowIn 2005, Romy decided to go back to her first love of teaching, and the Kindersley family, passionate advocates of organic living, became our new owners.

We continue to pioneer – with many firsts to our credit, see the panel opposite, we still make our products in the UK, growing ingredients on the Kindersley family’s organic farm in Berkshire as well as on our own farm at the NYR eco factory.

Our Dorset eco-factory houses our offices, staff restaurant and therapy rooms, together with our development laboratory, herbal tincture unit, manufacturing, bottling and dispatch areas. Designed to be energy and resource efficient, it has large areas of high performance glass to maximise natural light, a ‘grey water’ recycling system and 200m2 of solar panels. Outside is our herbal physic garden, wild flower meadow, and ‘Bee Lovely Competition’ decorated bee hive – complete with honey bees.

We also grow and wild-harvest a variety of herbs at Sheepdrove, the Kindersley’s organic farm in Berkshire, in particular our annual calendula harvest.

Organic100% organic products are our target,

but it’s not always possible. This is because ‘organic’ refers to agricultural production

standards – it can only refer to farmed ingredients. This means that water, salt,

minerals and clay though natural and pure, can’t ever be ‘organic’.

Also not every ingredient has a certified organic option available, but we’re constantly working with suppliers to address this where we can.

But rest assured, while it’s currently not possible to be 100% organic, we do have the UK’s largest

selection of Soil Association certified organic health and beauty products.

(down to 1%) so the highest quality always comes first.

How to Read our LabelsOur labels tell you exactly what’s in the bottle, and exactly which ingredients are organic.

What’s Inside European cosmetic listings are regulated so that the

same names are used by all brands. As common names can differ, plant extracts are listed by their latin species

name – for example Gallium aparine is known as cleavers, goosegrass, or stickywillie.

Bath & ShowerBathing with essential oils allows you to inhale the aromatic steam as well as absorb oils through the skin. Add five drops of essential oil to your base oil then add to a full bath – not running water – or add drops to a shower gel.

Massage

Ease aching muscles or energise the body with an aromatherapy massage. Mix three tablespoons of base massage oil with up to six drops of your chosen oil for children over two years, adults with delicate skin or if applying to face, and no more than 15 drops for adults without skin sensitivities.

Inhalation Help clear the head and nose by adding 4-6 drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming water. Place a towel over your head to trap the steam and inhale the vapour. Children and asthmatics should not use direct inhalation, but will benefit from placing a bowl of hot water with added oils nearby.

VaporizationEssential oils are natural air fresheners, fragrancing a room as well as setting a mood. Add a few drops of your chosen oils to a vaporiser or burner then follow the instructions on the burner.
