NZIM / Eagle TechnologyYoung Executive of the Year Award 2012

The NZIM/Eagle Technology Young Executive of the Year Award 2012 event was memorable for the range and quality of experience and advice shared by our Southern region nominees. Shane Gordon of Westland Milk Products is the experienced Business Development Manager who successfully secured the regional trophy on the night. Shane has accepted the challenge to compete for the National Young Executive of the Year 2012 award at the Deloitte/ Management Magazine TOP 200 event on 29 November 2012. He now has the chance to win a development training package with NZIM to the value of $5,000 together with a travel prize sponsored by Singapore Airlines.

As Business Development Manager Operations for Westland Milk Products, Shane’s ability to think and operate strategically has helped him deliver key objectives in the firms’ business plan, maximising opportunity, minimising waste and constantly ensuring that the optimum quality of product and service continues to be maintained.

We extend our congratulations to Shane on his recent award and acknowledge the stiff local competition he faced to secure this opportunity. Each of our southern finalists gave very impressive performances during the selection process and on the night and each won a years’ free membership of NZIM. Our regional nominees were; Kauahi Ngapora, Chief Operating Officer for Whale Watch Kaikoura, Kate Scott, Managing Director for BTW South Limited and Sean Cuddihy, International Business Manager for Solid Energy.

Our celebratory evening would not be possible, of course, without the continuing generous support of Eagle Technology our principal sponsor of both the local and national award. We were delighted to welcome Sarah MacDonald to participate in the presentation again this year. Our thanks are also extended to the Copthorne Hotel Commodore for their hospitality and support on the night.

We offer our sincere thanks to our judges, Bill Tate, Cathy Hemsworth and Gordon Richards for their talent selection as well as our enlightening guest speakers – Dan Coward, 2009 regional award winner and Deputy Chair of NZIM Incorporated and Matt Carter our 2011 regional award winner.

Are You Suffering from Earthquake Growing pains? As a consequence of the Christchurch earthquakes many companies involved in the deconstruction and the subsequent rebuild have had to significantly increase their staff numbers, some in excess of 100% of pre- earthquake numbers.

This growth has increased pressure on established management structures, as individuals take on more responsibility or have been thrust into leadership positions for which they have not been prepared.

This lack of preparation can result in rushed jobs and can be costly to your business.

Often it leads to:• Poor decision making • Poor people management • Stress and anxiety• Tension and lack of efficiency

These trends are likely to continue and as the rebuild plans unfold over the next ten or more years, the pressure can only increase.

It is important to act now and provide staff with foundation training in leadership and management that empowers them to work.

12 day Team Leader Programme for the Christchurch Rebuild

This comprehensive programme is a combination of five special courses providing the depth and breadth of foundation training and skills to allow your staff member to manage teams effectively, efficiently manage projects and have effective conversations with staff members.

To find out more please discuss further with our Learning and Development team. Phone: 03 379 2302.

Chambers Strategy and Communication is a well established Christchurch firm which provides leadership, thinking, facilitation and engagement to support Canterbury and South Island organisations and businesses to develop and tell their stories.Founded almost a decade ago by Tracey and Noel Chambers, the company has recently up weighted its senior team to add more experience to the strategic thinking, marketing and big-business communications capabilities it offers to the market. The company’s aspiration is to develop and tell best selling business and commercial stories from our region. To develop the story we often need to go right back to the beginning and make sure our client partners are clear on who they are, where they are heading, what they want to achieve and how they will do that.Sometimes there is no clear story or it’s incomplete, sometimes it’s old and needs to change, sometimes it’s not working and is no longer relevant, or it’s a special project or crisis. Whether it’s another chapter, a sequel or an entirely new book, we work with our clients to understand and develop their story so it is clear and simple for everyone. We then work together to tell that story and bring it to life so that it becomes a compelling catalyst for unity and change with all client stakeholders. We also support clients to make it happen and leverage our network of relationships and alliances for their benefit.“Our philosophy is to make our clients the lead story and to offer them the confidence to allow us to protect and build their reputations,” said Tracey Chambers, head Strategist and Director.“That approach has allowed us to build a large and loyal base of clients, many of whom are now more partners than clients and friends more than contacts.”

In February, I wrote about the changes within NZIM Southern that had resulted from the earthquake and since then, I have spoken with many leaders throughout the South Island who are taking steps to future-proof their companies, by preparing now for predictable change.

Most of our challenges are not unique to us and one of the benefits of being part of a membership organisation is the advantage you can gain from sharing what others around you have learned. It is not only Canterbury businesses who have been forced to re-assess their business model post earthquake. Many companies are feeling the pressure to grow swiftly to meet current demands or are expected to manage sudden growth by absorbing new staff. Now is the time to speak with our Learning and Development advisors about our management and leadership programmes. We look forward to assisting you with building management and leadership capability within your organisation.

Management Matters - September / October 2012

Think Globally, Learn Locally How do some organisations manage to become market leaders in challenging times? They invest in developing the capability of their leaders. The Advanced Management Programme is a unique leadership learning opportunity, there is no programme like it in New Zealand. International faculty have travelled to Christchurch for 34 years sharing insights from international best practice and challenging participants to hone their skills and practises as leaders. The participants are immersed in the programme; they work together and in syndicates, use current case studies, draw on their own experiences, and provide constant feedback.

The programme is divided in two segments to enable participants to return to their workplace, reflect on their learning, and manage their work/life balance.

Recently I joined the class of 2012 for drinks just before their farewell dinner. Participants were from all over New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. The benefits of the programme ranged from improved understanding of marketing, finance, organisational psychology and behaviours but significantly it was an understanding of the role of the leader and an appreciation of staff that shone through.

I look forward to hearing more of the stories from this generation of new leaders when they return for the free Post Graduate programme in 2013.

Are you a graduate of this programme? Would you be interested in joining an alumni group. Contact me, Therese La Porte, [email protected]

This unique programme is only offered once a year.

THE

NZIM Southern members enjoyed networking and hospitality together on Wednesday 25th July, prior to attending The Motor Camp, a classic kiwi comedy by Dave Armstrong.

The party were welcomed on arrival with drinks and nibbles hosted by NZIM

Southern and during the evening we laughed aloud at the many familiar behaviours and rituals that characterise the average kiwi camping holiday.

The evening was enjoyed by all and we look forward to sharing similar light- hearted occasions as well as learning opportunities with our members in the latter portion of this year.
