THE TEXT: 2 Samuel 21:1-14 The story seems straight for-ward enough. A life threateningproblem arises in the country inthe form of a famine. The kingdoes what any responsible leaderwould do, he makes enquiries asto the cause of the famine. Inthe course of his enquiries, the

king is told by God that the fam-ine is the result of what the pre-vious king is guilty of, a sin thathasn’t been properly compen-sated for. Specifically, the previous kingis guilty of genocide, i.e., themass killing of a minority eth-nic group who are part of thecountry’s population. So it ispresumed that unless properreparations are met, the problemof the famine will continue toendanger the lives of the generalpopulation. Indeed, seven of theprevious king’s descendants areexecuted in public, in order tomake amends for his sin, andhopefully this is enough to avertthe calamity of the famine. Themother of two of the men beingexecuted, is mentioned as pro-tecting the dead bodies from theapproaches of scavenging birdsand animals. Eventually aftersometime, God decides to sendrain on the land, thus ending thefamine. One could say therefore, thatthe story is about how the kingacted decisively and justifiably,to put an end to a crisis that wascrippling the nation and indeed,threatening to kill off many peo-ple who are under the king’s re-sponsibility and care. However,

a closer reading of the storyraises a number of thorny ques-tions that would suggest to usthat it’s not that straight forwardas initially thought. In otherwords, there are certain detailsin the story that demand ourcloser attention and hence bet-ter clarification. For instance: Why has it taken three yearsof famine in the land before kingDavid decides to do somethingabout it? Is this the response ofa leader who is truly concernedfor his people? If the cause of the famine isking Saul’s bloodguilt, why didit not happen during his reign?In other words, should not Saulhave suffered the consequencesof his own wrongdoing? Afterall, the story seems to be mak-ing the point that any wrong do-ing must be equally retributed. There is no record anywherethat tells of the so called geno-cide that Saul is supposed tohave committed. Of course itdoesn’t mean that it didn’thapppen. But it’s intriquing thatan event of such proportions isnot found anywhere in the his-tory of Saul’s reign in Israel. Thestory teller clearly states (v.1)that only David was privy towhat the Lord had to say. Suchdetails can raise our ownsuspiciouns of David’s activitiesand his motives. Is it possible that David, themost powerful man in the coun-try has fabricated the wholething? Of course, the Gibeonites

never disputed the claim madeby David. Does this prove that David wastelling the truth? We need to be aware of thepower relations that exist be-tween David and the Gibeonites.That is, David is the most pow-erful man in Isarael. TheGibeonites are only a minorityethnic group who live amarginalized life in Israel.Clearly, the Gibeonites would beliving in fear of what king Davidis capable of. Even if David was telling thetruth and is genuinely concernedfor justice, why would he nottake the option of a monetarypayment? Why would he agreeto the brutal killing of seven ofSaul’s sons? For a man of hispower, David could haveavoided any more bloodshed. Is David seeking an opportu-nity to get rid of any future op-position from the descendants ofSaul? Might David be using theGibeonites to carry out his ownpolitical agendas? All these scenarios are possi-ble. Note that the Gibeonitesrefer to Saul as “:the chosen ofthe Lord” (v.6). Obviously theyrecognize Saul as someone whois legitimately chosen by God. The execution of the sevensons of Saul was carried out bythe Gibeonites, but the story-teller doesn’t mention if Davidwas present. It is intriguing thatafter the execution, the bodies ofSaul’s children were let to rot atthe place where they were killed.The scene is quite horrifying tosay the least.

Why were the sons of Saul notgiven proper burial after execu-tion? Is this some kind of sym-bolic warning? These were sonsand grandsons of the late king.Executed in public and left to roton the ground. This is the great-est form of dishonour and shameaccorded to any human being.Do they not deserve properburial? The king and theGibeonites do not seem to thinkso. Enter Rizbah, the mother oftwo of the sons of Saul. She is aconcubine of Saul and themother of two of his sons. Aconcubine is someone like a de-facto wife, but different from thereal wife. The word translated“concubine” also refers to ayoung maiden. It is quite cleartherefore, that in ancient NearEastern countries, powerful menwere in the habit of taking afancy to some of the youngerwomen who apppeared to bemore sexually desirable thantheir aging wives. May this be true of today’s so-cieties? Of course, these men had allthe power to take. King Solo-mon is said to have married 700princesses, but he still had 300concubines. Rizpah, being a concubinedoes not quite rank her the sameas the king’s queen. But her off-spring still count as sons of theking. Now that king Saul wasdead, her sons would have beenher only hope of survival in aworld where widows are not tookindly looked upon. Here wefind a comparison of extremes,where king David was abso-lutely powerful while Rizpahwas absolutely powerless. But Rizpah does everythingthat she could with the very lit-tle power that she has. That

power, as it turns out, is thepower of the life that she has.Dressed for mourning, she isdetermined to stay with herunburied sons, making sure thatno birds or animals ever gotclose to their dead bodies. Weare not told how long Rizpahtook her lonely vigil. But judg-ing from what the storyteller tellsus, all that was left of the decom-posed bodies were bones. Thismeans that Rizpah must havebeen there for many months. We can only marvel and beamazed, at the strength of thiswoman. Rizpah chooses to dothe only thing she could to hon-our her sons, by identifying her-self with her dead sons and re-maining in solidarity with them,even if it takes her life to do it.It is amazing that this womannever speaks a word, but her ac-tions spoke with an incrediblevolume. What Rizpah does hassuch far reaching effect that evenking David, the most powerfulman in Israel, is moved to do theright thing in the end. King Sauland his sons finally get the buri-als they deserve. What Rizpah has done couldbe understood as staging a silentprotest against the unnecessarykilling of her sons, but alsoagainst the ultimate dishonourthat David and the Gibeoniteshad accorded to Saul and hissons. While everyone was turn-ing a blind eye to David’s politi-cal manipulation of people un-der his power, under the guiseof a theology of retribution,Rizpah risked her life in silentresistance to such abuses ofpower. all, by those who have the powerto do the right thing if they settheir minds to it. Would say that it was Rizpah’ssilent protest that influencedGod’s decision to bring rainagain? At the end of the story, we aretold that God answered the pleaof the land when “all that theking had commanded wasdone”. This would mean thatGod was responding to whatDavid had done. On the otherhand, the rain is first mentionedexplicitly in relation to whatRizpah was doing (v.10) Whatever the case maybe,there is no doubt that when weidentify with Rizpah, we areidentifying with what she stands

for, the struggle for justice, andfor life in this world. We cannothelp but touched by the story ofthis woman. By sharing in herstory, we are at the same timeempowered by her strengh in ourown struggles in life. We live ina world that is not that much dif-ferent from the world of Rizpah.But if Rizpah the powerlesswoman can rise above the limitsof powerlessness, how muchmore can we achieve if we allstand together in solidarity withpeople like her? There is no going forward/moving forward or progress in asituation of conflict. Peacetherefore is never won throughconflict but only through dia-

logue. Dialogue is only madepossible through submission -the self willingness of eitherparty to surrender its will to thewill of the other. The ApostlePeter cites Sarah as an exampleof a woman of God, who wassubmissive to her husband (1Peter 3:5,6). The Epistle to theHebrews calls her one of theheroines of faith and spiritualbeauty (loving and respectful)Hebrew 1:11. Having to leave home and acountry to come away to a wholenew country and with a man, notof my own country was not go-

ing to be an easy feat. Therewere many reservations and Icannot say I did not fear that themarriage would not last becausethe odds were great against thismarriage. There were too many differ-ences and I could not be naiveabout the truth that looked mein the eye. I may have at somepoint in that time consoled my-self with the notion that “Well,we were going to American Sa-moa” and that because that wasthe dream I was about to give up,America. It is the dream of everyMarshallese girl, a life in Ha-waii, in Los Angeles, even in SanFransisco. It is the appropriatechoice and I am no different.Families live there. MarshallIslands is a U.S. protectorate andthat makes me a U.S. citizen.Language would not be a barrierbut I have to have this man, andwould not ask him to see thingsmy way, I would not dare let himknow I was anything but happyabout going away with him. There is infinity betweenCrazy Love and Loving out ofRespect. I did not want to fallvictim to the former, so I had tobe the “Fall Guy!” I was notcrazy about Solo and Solo wouldhave known and touched otheryoung Samoan women. Solowas committed to what broughthim to my country and when hewalked in to my class and intro-duced himself in his funny ac-cent: “Talofa! My name isSolomona. I am not the King ofIsrael. I am your teacher and Iam from Samoa.” And that wasthat! I could not take my eyesoff him. He was funny. He wasmatured and he was nice andthere was that something thatmade me follow him here. Thatsomething was RESPECT. I

Even our menseemed unreachable because wehad made them so - they becomeour idols and we would be justsilent admirers, close to almostworshipping our men. And thatis how crazy it can be, it seemsto submit. But we all made thatsacrifice; not by any rule by thatbeautiful surrender to make mar-riage a glorious union of self andspirit. I guess that is the God-thing. I found my strength in emula-tion of Sarah and I would do itagain and again if I have to. THE TEXT: 2 Samuel 21:1-14 The story seems straight for-ward enough. A life threateningproblem arises in the country inthe form of a famine. The kingdoes what any responsible leaderwould do, he makes enquiries asto the cause of the famine. Inthe course of his enquiries, the

king is told by God that the fam-ine is the result of what the pre-vious king is guilty of, a sin thathasn’t been properly compen-sated for. Specifically, the previous kingis guilty of genocide, i.e., themass killing of a minority eth-nic group who are part of thecountry’s population. So it ispresumed that unless properreparations are met, the problemof the famine will continue toendanger the lives of the generalpopulation. Indeed, seven of theprevious king’s descendants areexecuted in public, in order tomake amends for his sin, andhopefully this is enough to avertthe calamity of the famine. Themother of two of the men beingexecuted, is mentioned as pro-tecting the dead bodies from theapproaches of scavenging birdsand animals. Eventually aftersometime, God decides to sendrain on the land, thus ending thefamine. One could say therefore, thatthe story is about how the kingacted decisively and justifiably,to put an end to a crisis that wascrippling the nation and indeed,threatening to kill off many peo-ple who are under the king’s re-sponsibility and care. However,

a closer reading of the storyraises a number of thorny ques-tions that would suggest to usthat it’s not that straight forwardas initially thought. In otherwords, there are certain detailsin the story that demand ourcloser attention and hence bet-ter clarification. For instance: Why has it taken three yearsof famine in the land before kingDavid decides to do somethingabout it? Is this the response ofa leader who is truly concernedfor his people? If the cause of the famine isking Saul’s bloodguilt, why didit not happen during his reign?In other words, should not Saulhave suffered the consequencesof his own wrongdoing? Afterall, the story seems to be mak-ing the point that any wrong do-ing must be equally retributed. There is no record anywherethat tells of the so called geno-cide that Saul is supposed tohave committed. Of course itdoesn’t mean that it didn’thapppen. But it’s intriquing thatan event of such proportions isnot found anywhere in the his-tory of Saul’s reign in Israel. Thestory teller clearly states (v.1)that only David was privy towhat the Lord had to say. Suchdetails can raise our ownsuspiciouns of David’s activitiesand his motives. Is it possible that David, themost powerful man in the coun-try has fabricated the wholething? Of course, the Gibeonites

never disputed the claim madeby David. Does this prove that David wastelling the truth? We need to be aware of thepower relations that exist be-tween David and the Gibeonites.That is, David is the most pow-erful man in Isarael. TheGibeonites are only a minorityethnic group who live amarginalized life in Israel.Clearly, the Gibeonites would beliving in fear of what king Davidis capable of. Even if David was telling thetruth and is genuinely concernedfor justice, why would he nottake the option of a monetarypayment? Why would he agreeto the brutal killing of seven ofSaul’s sons? For a man of hispower, David could haveavoided any more bloodshed. Is David seeking an opportu-nity to get rid of any future op-position from the descendants ofSaul? Might David be using theGibeonites to carry out his ownpolitical agendas? All these scenarios are possi-ble. Note that the Gibeonitesrefer to Saul as “:the chosen ofthe Lord” (v.6). Obviously theyrecognize Saul as someone whois legitimately chosen by God. The execution of the sevensons of Saul was carried out bythe Gibeonites, but the story-teller doesn’t mention if Davidwas present. It is intriguing thatafter the execution, the bodies ofSaul’s children were let to rot atthe place where they were killed.The scene is quite horrifying tosay the least.

Why were the sons of Saul notgiven proper burial after execu-tion? Is this some kind of sym-bolic warning? These were sonsand grandsons of the late king.Executed in public and left to roton the ground. This is the great-est form of dishonour and shameaccorded to any human being.Do they not deserve properburial? The king and theGibeonites do not seem to thinkso. Enter Rizbah, the mother oftwo of the sons of Saul. She is aconcubine of Saul and themother of two of his sons. Aconcubine is someone like a de-facto wife, but different from thereal wife. The word translated“concubine” also refers to ayoung maiden. It is quite cleartherefore, that in ancient NearEastern countries, powerful menwere in the habit of taking afancy to some of the youngerwomen who apppeared to bemore sexually desirable thantheir aging wives. May this be true of today’s so-cieties? Of course, these men had allthe power to take. King Solo-mon is said to have married 700princesses, but he still had 300concubines. Rizpah, being a concubinedoes not quite rank her the sameas the king’s queen. But her off-spring still count as sons of theking. Now that king Saul wasdead, her sons would have beenher only hope of survival in aworld where widows are not tookindly looked upon. Here wefind a comparison of extremes,where king David was abso-lutely powerful while Rizpahwas absolutely powerless. But Rizpah does everythingthat she could with the very lit-tle power that she has. That

power, as it turns out, is thepower of the life that she has.Dressed for mourning, she isdetermined to stay with herunburied sons, making sure thatno birds or animals ever gotclose to their dead bodies. Weare not told how long Rizpahtook her lonely vigil. But judg-ing from what the storyteller tellsus, all that was left of the decom-posed bodies were bones. Thismeans that Rizpah must havebeen there for many months. We can only marvel and beamazed, at the strength of thiswoman. Rizpah chooses to dothe only thing she could to hon-our her sons, by identifying her-self with her dead sons and re-maining in solidarity with them,even if it takes her life to do it.It is amazing that this womannever speaks a word, but her ac-tions spoke with an incrediblevolume. What Rizpah does hassuch far reaching effect that evenking David, the most powerfulman in Israel, is moved to do theright thing in the end. King Sauland his sons finally get the buri-als they deserve. What Rizpah has done couldbe understood as staging a silentprotest against the unnecessarykilling of her sons, but alsoagainst the ultimate dishonourthat David and the Gibeoniteshad accorded to Saul and hissons. While everyone was turn-ing a blind eye to David’s politi-cal manipulation of people un-der his power, under the guiseof a theology of retribution,Rizpah risked her life in silentresistance to such abuses ofpower. all, by those who have the powerto do the right thing if they settheir minds to it. Would say that it was Rizpah’ssilent protest that influencedGod’s decision to bring rainagain? At the end of the story, we aretold that God answered the pleaof the land when “all that theking had commanded wasdone”. This would mean thatGod was responding to whatDavid had done. On the otherhand, the rain is first mentionedexplicitly in relation to whatRizpah was doing (v.10) Whatever the case maybe,there is no doubt that when weidentify with Rizpah, we areidentifying with what she stands

for, the struggle for justice, andfor life in this world. We cannothelp but touched by the story ofthis woman. By sharing in herstory, we are at the same timeempowered by her strengh in ourown struggles in life. We live ina world that is not that much dif-ferent from the world of Rizpah.But if Rizpah the powerlesswoman can rise above the limitsof powerlessness, how muchmore can we achieve if we allstand together in solidarity withpeople like her? There is no going forward/moving forward or progress in asituation of conflict. Peacetherefore is never won throughconflict but only through dia-

logue. Dialogue is only madepossible through submission -the self willingness of eitherparty to surrender its will to thewill of the other. The ApostlePeter cites Sarah as an exampleof a woman of God, who wassubmissive to her husband (1Peter 3:5,6). The Epistle to theHebrews calls her one of theheroines of faith and spiritualbeauty (loving and respectful)Hebrew 1:11. Having to leave home and acountry to come away to a wholenew country and with a man, notof my own country was not go-

ing to be an easy feat. Therewere many reservations and Icannot say I did not fear that themarriage would not last becausethe odds were great against thismarriage. There were too many differ-ences and I could not be naiveabout the truth that looked mein the eye. I may have at somepoint in that time consoled my-self with the notion that “Well,we were going to American Sa-moa” and that because that wasthe dream I was about to give up,America. It is the dream of everyMarshallese girl, a life in Ha-waii, in Los Angeles, even in SanFransisco. It is the appropriatechoice and I am no different.Families live there. MarshallIslands is a U.S. protectorate andthat makes me a U.S. citizen.Language would not be a barrierbut I have to have this man, andwould not ask him to see thingsmy way, I would not dare let himknow I was anything but happyabout going away with him. There is infinity betweenCrazy Love and Loving out ofRespect. I did not want to fallvictim to the former, so I had tobe the “Fall Guy!” I was notcrazy about Solo and Solo wouldhave known and touched otheryoung Samoan women. Solowas committed to what broughthim to my country and when hewalked in to my class and intro-duced himself in his funny ac-cent: “Talofa! My name isSolomona. I am not the King ofIsrael. I am your teacher and Iam from Samoa.” And that wasthat! I could not take my eyesoff him. He was funny. He wasmatured and he was nice andthere was that something thatmade me follow him here. Thatsomething was RESPECT. I

Even our menseemed unreachable because wehad made them so - they becomeour idols and we would be justsilent admirers, close to almostworshipping our men. And thatis how crazy it can be, it seemsto submit. But we all made thatsacrifice; not by any rule by thatbeautiful surrender to make mar-riage a glorious union of self andspirit. I guess that is the God-thing. I found my strength in emula-tion of Sarah and I would do itagain and again if I have to.
