O-ring
1. Introduction, identification
The O-ring is an efficient, cost-effective
sealing element for a great diversity ofapplications.
It is extensively used virtually in allbranches of industry.
Elastomer materials in different formu-
lations ensure that almost any mediacan be reliably sealed off.
The O-ring is an endless round sealingwith a circular cross section.

2. Dichtwirkung

2. Sealing effect
The sealing effect of the O-ring is theresult of the axial or radial compressionof the ring's cross section when it isinstalled. The O-ring is considered to be
an active sealing element due to thealmost incompressible behaviour of theelastomer materials so that the pres-sure on the sealing surfaces as a resultof the system pressure is even increased
(Fig. 2).

3. Einsatzbereiche
1. Anwendungsfall:
Statisch (bis 50 bar, >50 bar mit
Sttzring) Dynamisch (bis 50 bar)
2. Medien
3. Temperaturbereiche:

4. Prozedrcke
5. maximale Spaltmae
6. Relativgeschwindigkeiten:

rotierend max. 2 m/s
7. Sonderanforderungen
Bei hher beanspruchten Abdichtungsan-wendungen,
Betriebsdrcke ber 50 bar
hohe Dauertemperaturen
ungnstige Dichtspaltabmessungen
wird grundstzlich der Einsatz von Sttz-ringen empfohlen. (ULMAN Sttzring-Kapi-tel, Seite 20).
Fr die
dynamische Abdichtung

3. Fields of application
O-rings are used in widely differing tech-
nical areas, for instance as individualsealing elements in pneumatics andhydraulics, and as tensioning elementsfor sealing sets and scrapers.
Principal fields of application:
Axial - Static seals
Radial - Static seals
To guarantee dependable sealing inany given application, the following pa-rameters have to be related to eachother in their entirety when selecting a
suitable O-ring in the appropriate mate-rial:
1. Application
Static (up to 50 bar, >50 bar
with back-up ring)
Dynamic (up to 50 bar)
2. Media
3. Temperature ranges: Permanent temperatures
Peak temperatures
Exposure duration
4. Process pressures
5. Maximum gap dimensions
6. Relative speed
Linear max. 0.5 m/s
Rotating max. 2 m/s
7. Special requirements
With highly stressed seal applications,
Operating pressures exceeding
50 bar
High permanent temperatures
Unfavourable sealing gap dimen-
sions
Back-up rings are recommended as ageneral principle. (Chapter ULMAN
Back-up ring, Page 20)
The use of O-rings for
dynamic sealing is limited.
The application possibilities are limitedby the relative speeds in interaction withthe effective pressures. An increase intemperature as a result of frictional heatmust also be taken into account.
Our technical consultant will be happyto discuss your particular problems.

4. Konstruktionshinweise
max. 6% aufgedehnt
max. 3% gestaucht
werden.
Die Dichtwirkung des O-Rings wird durch
seine Vorpressung erreicht. Je nach
Anwendungsfall sollten nachfolgende Wer-
te erreicht werden:
dynamische Abdichtung 6 - 20%
statische Abdichtung 15 - 30%

4. Design information
Selecting the correct O-ring
In any given application it is always
prudent to adopt the largest possible O-Ring cross section in relation to theinside diameter d1 when selecting thecross section d2.
It is particularly advisable to select thenext larger cross section in connectionwith unfavourable tolerance conditions.
When radially installed, O-rings can be
extended by max. 6%, and
compressed by max. 3%,
depending upon the given application.
The sealing effect of the O-ring is the
result of its initial compression. Depend-ing upon the application, the followingvalues should be achieved:
Dynamic sealing 6 - 20%
Static sealing 15 - 30%
Table 1 lists the recommended initial O-
ring compression in relation to the crosssection d2 and the application.
Minimum values are for:
Hydraulics 6%
Pneumatics 2%
In special applications in the field of
pneumatics O-rings are installed en-tirely free of any initial compression.

Surface quality
The contact surface must conform withminimum quality standards (Table 2) toachieve an optimal sealing effect. Thepermissible surface roughness values
must not be exceeded with dynamicseal applications or with pulsating pres-sures.
Gap widths
An excessive sealing gap gives rise to
extrusion which will destroy theelastomer O-ring (Fig. 3).
O-rings of 90 Shore A permit slightlylarger gap widths as 70 Shore A stand-ard O-rings.
For static and dynamic applications it is
always advisable to use backi-up ringsin connection with pressures of 50 barand higher.
In this case the O-ring/back-up-ring com-bination requires a wider groove width.
(Chapter ULMAN Back-up ring,Page 20)
The guide values for gap dimensionslisted in Table 3 for standard elastomersare maximum values in connection withcentric arrangement of the components.
And these must not be exceeded, even
in the case of unfavourable tolerances.

Radial installation - Static and dy-namic application
Establishing the matching O-ring diam-eter (Fig. 4):
The following applies to internally seal-ing applications (groove in the outerpart):
O-ring diameter d1 = D4
The following applies to externally seal-ing applications (groove in the innerpart):
O-ring diameter d1 < D3
With dimensional differences O-ringscan be compressed by maximum 3%,and extended by maximum 6% (seeChapter 4).
Axial installation - Static application
To obtain a dependable sealing func-tion with this version it is necessary toobserve the acting direction of the pres-sure (Fig. 5).
If the pressure is acting from within, thenthe O-ring should be seated in the out-
side groove diameter D5.
The O-ring outside diameter (d1+2d2)should be approx. 2% larger than thegroove outside diameter D5. The fol-lowing is applicable to diameter d1:
d1 ~ D5 x 1.02 - 2 x d2
If the pressure is acting from the out-side, the O-ring should be seated at thegroove inside diameter D6.
The diameter d1 of the O-ring should beapprox. 2% smaller than the grooveinside diameter D6.
d1 ~ D6 x 0.98
Installation dimensions for rectan-gular groove
If possible the seating grooves of O-rings should be rectangular.
The O-ring must not completely fill thegroove when in a compressed state.
Sloping groove flanks of up to approx.5are permissible (Fig. 6).
The design of the groove radii R2 inrelation to the cord thickness d2 is speci-fied in the last column in Table 4.
The radius R1 can be maximum0.2 mm.
The groove flanks must be rectangular
when using Back-up rings (ChapterULMAN Back-up ring, Page 20).

entspricht der Standardqualitt
Sortenmerkmal S,
entspricht Sorten mit erhhten Quali-ttsansprchen
O-Ringe in Sortenmerkmal S werden nicht
am Lager gefhrt.
Material hardness
The material hardness of O-rings isestablished with standard specimens. Itis specified in Shore A and can varybetween 40 and 90 Shore A.
The IRHD measuring principle is usedfor measuring finished parts.
The correct choice of hardness dependsupon the application, the material, theeffective pressures, tolerances and gap
widths.
Dynamic applications normally requireO-rings of 70 to 90 Shore.

FEP O-ring
1. Introduction
The FEP O-ring (Fig. 1) can be de-
scribed as an elastomer ring that isenveloped in a seamless FEP sheath.
FEP is a per-fluorinated polymer of ex-cellent chemical resistance, similar tothat of PTFE.
FEP is an economic alternative wher-
ever the chemical resistance of thestandard elastomers is insufficient.
Defining the dimensions and ordersizes(Fig. 1):
Inside diameter d1
Cross section d2
FEP O-rings are available in the same
dimensions as elastomer O-rings.
Due to the FEP sheath, and depending
upon the different cross section, theminimal values of the inside diameter d1must be maintained. Table 1 lists the
respective limit values.

3. Fields of application
FEP O-rings are used in many different
technical areas.
On account of the good chemical resist-ance, physiological harmlessness andthe fact that they can be sterilised theyare widely used in the chemical and
petrochemical, food and medical indus-
tries.
Principal areas of application:
axial - static sealing
radial - static sealing
The following factors must be taken intoaccount in their entirety to ensure de-
pendable sealing:
1. The given application:
Static
Dynamic
2. Media (no liquid alkali metals andsome fluorinated compounds)
3. Temperature ranges
4. Process pressures
5. Maximum gap dimensions
6. Relative speed
With highly stressed seal applications,
Operating pressures exceeding 50

Unfavourable sealing gap dimen-
sions
Concave Back-up rings are recom-mended as a general principle (ChapterULMAN Back-up ring, Page 20).
For
dynamic sealing
FEP O-rings can be used for slow linearand switching motions.
The advantage in this connection is low
friction so that FEP O-rings do not sufferfrom any stick-slip effect.
Our technical consultants will be happyto advise you concerning applicationmatters.
4. Design information
With regard to groove design the sameapplies to installation FEP O-rings as tostandard elastomer O-rings (see
ULMAN O-ring Installation Recommen-
dation).
The same applies to surface qualitiesand sealing gap dimensions S.
The FEP jacket, however, cannot bedeformed to the same extent as
elastomer O-rings - extensibility andcompressibility are limited.
Consequently split grooves are recom-mended for installation FEP O-rings.

5. Werkstoffe
FEP O-Ringe sind in zwei Varianten erhlt-lich:
FKM Elastomer Kern
Temperaturbereich: -25 Cbis +200 C
VMQ Elastomer Kern
Temperaturbereich: -60 Cbis +200 C
Die angegebenen Temperaturbereiche sind
theoretische Grenzwerte.

5. Materials
FEP O-rings are available in two vari-
ants:
FKM elastomer core
Temperature range: -25C to+200C
VMQ elastomer core
Temperature range: -60C to+200C
The specified temperature ranges aretheoretical limit values. These shouldalways be somewhat lower in interac-tion with media and effective pressures.
6. Installation instructions
When installation the FEP O-ring itshould be noted that their extensibility isonly limited.
For reliably sealing the FEP O-ring mustnot be marred by scratches or other
damage, nor must it be buckled wheninstalled.

PTFE O-ring extension or compression
is only possible to a limited extent. Dueto the low elasticity of PTFE O-ringsthey must have the same dimension asthe surface that is to be sealed.
They should only be installed in easily
accessible split grooves.
They are subject to the same generalspecifications regarding design and sur-face quality as those for elastomer O-rings.
5. Installation variants
Figure 2 shows the different installationvariants together with the correspond-ing O-ring types. The spreader slit is
always located opposite to the pressureside.
Wherever possible the variants B and Cshould be avoided on account of theircomplicated groove design.

Back-up ring
1. IntroductionTypes
Back-up rings (Fig. 1) are elements
that support the protective function ofelastomer sealing elements, e.g.O-rings.
In static and dynamic applications athigh stress rates they prevent the
penetration (gap extrusion) of thesealing element in the sealing gap.
Versions for radial use
BU Back-up ring, unslotted
BG Back-up ring, slit BK Back-up ring, concave
BB Back-up ring, concave slit
BS Back-up ring, spiral form
Special versions, such as Back-up ringsfor axial use, upon request.
Ordered sizes
To determine the Back-up ring diameterD13 and D12 (Fig. 1) it is necessary to
take the application (static or dynamic)and the installation version (externallyor internally sealing) into account.
The wall thickness D depends upon theO-ring cross section d2.
The basic size for internally sealing in-
stallation is the shaft diameter D4; withexternally sealing installation the cylin-der diameter D9 (Fig. 3).
The supplementary information should
include the O-ring cross section d2 andthe groove base diameter D3/D8.
2. Manner of action
High and pulsating pressures, wide seal-ing gaps and high dynamic stressescause the elastomer sealing ring to beforced into the sealing gap, thereby dam-
aging the sealing ring.
The sealing function is no longer as-sured.
Back-up rings (Fig. 2) prevent gap ex-trusion as they cover the sealing gap.
Even at the highest stress rates theelastomer sealing ring assumes a de-fined shape and cannot penetrate intothe sealing gap.

Rotationsbewegung bis ca. 150 bar
Statischer Einsatz bis ca. 2500 bar
Ungnstige Toleranzen und groe Spalt-mae
Starke pulsierende Drcke und Druck-wechsel
Hohe dynamische Belastungen mit Ge-
schwindigkeiten bis:Linear max. 0,5 m/s
Rotierend max. 2 m/s
Groe Temperatureinflsse-150 C bis +200 C

3. Fields of application
The use of Back-up rings is recom-
mended for the following operating con-ditions:
Generally with all pressures exceed-ing 50 bar. The following limit valuesmust be taken into account with static
and dynamic application:
Linear motion up to approx. 400 barRotary motion up to approx. 150 barStatic use up to approx. 2500 bar
Unfavourable tolerances and widegap dimensions
Intensely pulsating pressures and
pressure change

4. Design information
Back-up rings are combination elementsfor elastomer sealing elements (e.g. O-rings). Consequently, the same appliesregarding the surface condition, insert
inclination, etc.
The groove widths are adapted to theadditional space taken up by the Back-up ring.
The Back-up ring must always be in-stalled opposite to the pressure applica-
tion side.If the pressure is applied on both sidesthen the O-ring must be sandwichedbetween two Back-up rings.
The sealing gap should be as small aspossible even when Back-up rings are
used. The tolerance combinations H8/f7, H8/h9 should be envisaged.
Depending upon the O-ring diameter d1and the selected O-ring cross sectiond2, divided grooves should be consid-ered in connection with unslotted Back-
up rings; Table 1.
