DIRECTOR’S NOTE Thank you so much for choosing to spend your time with us at Oak Park High School for Disney’s The Little Mermaid! Warn-ing: this is not the cartoon version. There will be actual actors, singers, and dancers on stage. They will be three demensional. It will be live, and no, you cannot rewind your VHS to watch it again (please be kind and rewind!) All joking aside, this version of the story differs just a tad from the 1989 classic we all know and love, that ushered in what some refer to as “the Disney Renaissance.” I grew up in the glory of that decade and still remember my sister’s Little Mermaid themed birthday party. What’s funny is that little girls all over America are still doing that! Some key differences that are present in this version of under sea drama, meriment, and inter-species love (without spoiling the whole batch) are a more fully fleshed-out backstory for Ursula and her ties to Triton and Ariel--they are related! All the songs we remember are locked and loaded as well as some new songs that reveal more of the inner-workings of the characters we know. Act II differs greatly from the film. Particularly in Ursula’s involvement in the plot as she attempts to intercede and prevent Ariel from receiving Eric’s kiss to seal the deal and remain human forever. Ursula’s ultimate outcome (and the means by which it hap-pens) are also different--no spoilers! All in all what we get in this stage adaptation of the movie is a wonderful trip down memory lane, and a nice reinterpretation of certain story elements and characters--look for them and re-watch the movie to compare and contrast! Onto our production and the way we have presented it to you. There is one thing that is challenging about producing such a family favorite--everybody knows it. That means there are expectations for how things look and sound. We knew this going into the summer and as a production team we decided we were going to do our best to make it our own and bring our creative flair to the look and feel of our visual elements. We incorporated the use of theatrical puppets (made lovingly by my talented students in Stagecraft)--we hope you enjoy them! Some puppets, you may notice, are a blatent tongue in cheek reference of a certain other Disney movie that may or may not also be set in the ocean...see if you can “find” our four friends (we see them three times!). The scenic design is the work of senior, Roe Grace and she has done a phenominal job with her attention to detail to bring us all under the sea. With the help of art teacher Alison Myers we all learned a thing or two about paper mache (and what you can accomplish with foam and hot glue gun!). There is honestly so much to brag on this show, I don’t have enough paper. Make sure you check out who did what in the Crew page! We hope you enjoy soaking in our technical elements all built by students (and the guidance of Ryan Davis, Julianne Donovan, and Jenny Knecht). Crew you rock and I can’t wait for you to make magic on stage! I am a very proud director. I have seen so many of my students grow and struggle and learn through the challenges of this show--I hope it was worth all the late nights and stress! Actors I have had so much fun getting into the depth of this story and working with you to bring the characters to life in new ways. Take us there and tell this story. To my cast, crew, musicians, and creative team thank you so much for your time, talent, and passion for story telling--it takes our entire ensemble to do it! To my seniors enjoy every second of it and just have a blast! To the parents of the almost 100 students involved in this production, thank you for letting us borrow your kids for these three months--look what they accomplished! To our audience I ask that you suspend your disbelief and take a few hours to imagine with us. Forget the cartoon--three dimensions is way better. Finally to all...remember this one important fact...life is the bubbles under the sea. Now take a breath and dive with us.

Cheers,

Brian Gehrlein (Artistic Director)

A Gold Award Project How do you combine a love for theatre and a love for the environment? By helping both at the same time! This is the basis for my Girl Scout Gold Award Project.

Each year millions of gallons of paint are thrown into landfills, an incredibly unsafe practice for the environment. My project aims to recycle some of this paint and reuse it for a good cause, a High School Theatre! We can save money we would spend on paint and use it for other needs within the department. Donate during an OPHS Theatre Production to receive a raffle ticket for an amazing prize!

Donate! Latex Based Paint

Donations of latex based paint will be sorted based on shade and then mixed together to form neutral colors. These colors will be used by the theatre to paint base coats for sets and other needs. The unusable paint will be taken to a paint recycling center. Any size or color paint is accepted!

Paint Supplies

The theatre is always in need of painting supplies such as paint brushes big and small, paint roller refills, roller trays, and roller tray liners. Any donations of this sort will be greatly appreciated.
