From the Pastor’s Pen... February 2013
I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately... thinking about life and its purpose, frailty, and brevity. I’ve found myself even looking at “The Senior’s Menu” and wondering if they would ask me for my i.d. card!!! I have wondered what life will be like for my daughter when she’s my age. I hear my friends talk about living on their retirement funds, investments, and social security. I also hear from those who wonder how much month will be left when the money runs out. Thrift and Consignment stores seem to be the rage these days while investment firms invite us to “hi-brow” restaurants attempting to convince guests that their firm could provide a “Ruth’s Criss lifestyle” for everyone. I turn on the local news and see lines of folks trying to get into a gun show. I have seen people leaving sporting goods stores in dismay as their favorite bullets for target practice are out of stock with no knowledge when the next shipment will arrive. I have heard the cries of momma’s when the food pantry ran out of baby formula just before it was her “turn to shop.” I am not an alarmist. I don’t usually jump on bandwagons without some serious thought, wisdom sought, and inward wrestling wrought... I struggle when I see folks receiving “tax-free” handouts while holding the sign, “need a job.” Yet, it appears they have a job from 9-5 at the corner of the busy intersection. You may struggle with societal issues as well. What do we do? Many years ago, Martin Niemoller, (1892-1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps. He penned the following words-- First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me. Jesus said many years ago as Luke recorded, that His mission was to proclaim the good news of God that would result in the blind seeing, the poor receiving help, the sick healed, the deaf hearing, and even the dead raised. Jesus’ mission, is our mission, if we choose to accept it. It’s a joy to serve Jesus as your pastor...

NOTES, MISSION OPPORTUNTIES and ANNOUNCEMENTS
Throughout the year, the Oakland Baptist WOM Groups will be collecting items for the Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. Specific items have been designated for each month. For February, we will be collecting Personal Hygiene Items – toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and washcloths. The collection boxes will be on the tall table across from the old kitchen. Please
place your items in these boxes. If you need assistance getting your items downstairs, please see a member of the WOM Evening Group – Teresa Groome, Pat Groome, Lesley Alford, Sherry Alston, Shirley Bath, Angie Wright or Sharon Kincaid. In November, we will sponsor a Church-wide packing party. Information regarding this event will be posted as we get closer to the date. Thank you for supporting our on-going mission project.
MORE THAN NETS
Virginia Baptists have entered into a 2 year agreement with the Ghana Baptist
Convention to complete the “More Than Nets” project. Our goals are simple yet
significant. We want to significantly reduce the cases of malaria in a northern
region of Ghana known as Yendi. We will do so by distributing 100,000 chemically
treated mosquito nets within the Yendi municipality. We will also provide vital
education for the proper use of the mosquito net as well as additional education on health, awareness and
prevention of malaria.
At the same time we will assist the Ghana Baptist Convention in meeting one of their visions by planting a
church in each village in the Yendi municipality. There are approximately 454 communities in Yendi with
145 already have a church so we would need to plant 309 new churches.
For the low cost of $10, you can provide an entire family safety from deadly malaria and help plant
churches. For more information, please see the Goshen November newsletter or speak with any WOM
member. May God bless this ministry.
We are excited to welcome Joe and Ann Lovell who will be visiting with us for WMU Focus Sunday, February 17. We hope you will be able to join us to hear Ann’s message during this special worship service. Joe and Ann Lovell serve with the International Mission Board. Joe, an accountant, currently serves in the Office of Finance and Ann is a writer with the global communication team. They returned to the U.S in June after serving 13 years in Asia -- in Manila, Philippines; Seoul, South Korea; and Chiang Mai, Thailand. During their time in Thailand, Joe served as Director of Finance and Ann and a few colleagues initiated a ministry to exploited
women in the city's red-light district. The ministry, heartweavers, grew to include exisiting ministries to orphans and juvenile women prisoners. The Lovells have two daughters. Lauren is a freshman at the University of Tennessee, and Alli is a sixth grader at Pocahontas Middle School.
Ladies: Would you like to use your therapeutic touch skills to give pedicures
and manicure to some less fortunate ladies and enjoy wonderful fellowship?
We will be joining the ladies of River Road Church, Baptist on Thursday
evening, February 21 at 7:30. We can meet at Oakland and ride together. Please
call Betsy Young at 804.457.4048 if you are interested. The blessings of this
ministry are incredible, surprising, limitless, and amazing.
