Dear Parishioners,ThecelebrationsofEasterseemsofarawaynowbutthespiritoftheRisenChristwillbewithus forever. Thank you once again to all who supported and were involved in the lead up to thewonderfulspiritualcelebrationsandtoallwhoattended.Youweremarvellousasalways.When I look at our Pastoral Candle it truly reminds me of the Peace and Hope given to us by Christ Jesus, the Risen Lord. Editorial Eucharist and Divorce. At one of their Ad Limina visits to Rome in 2010 to report on the church, the NZ bishop’s raised the question ofDivorce and remarriage with the Pope, who seemed to listensympathetically.However,nothingconstructivehasresulted. Nearly all of us have this sadness in a close family member and it touches our lives. This year, Cardinal CarloMariaMartini, Archbishop ofMilan, died but just before he did he gave an interview on thechurch.Inonesectionhehadthistosay. “Who are the sacraments for? These are the third tool of healing. The sacraments are not an instrument of discipline, but a help for people in their journey and in the weaknesses of their lives. Are we carrying the sacraments to the people who need new strength? I think of all the divorced and remarried couples, to extended families. They need special protection. The church upholds theindissolubility of matrimony. It's a grace when a marriage and a family succeed ... The attitude we hold towards extended familiesdetermines the ability of the church to be close to their children. A woman, for instance, is abandoned by her husbandandfindsanewcompanionwhotakescareofherand her three children. This second love succeeds. If this family is discriminated against, not only is the mother cut out [from the church] but also her children. If the parents feel like they're outside the church and don't feel its support,thechurchwilllosethefuturegeneration.Beforecommunion,wepray:"Lord,Iamnotworthy...'Weknowwe'renotworthy...Loveisagrace.Loveisagift.Thequestionofwhetherthedivorcedcanreceivecommunionought to be turned around. How can the church reach peoplewhohavecomplicatedfamilysituations?”TheArchbishopofMilanputsintoperspectivewhatthesacraments are about, tools of making God present, of healing but not a tool of discipline. I think this asks each of us to think about where we stand of this issue. Like the Archbishop, dowequestionthechurchonsomeissuesordo we just accept them. We do know it is a grace when marriage succeeds and that is the desired way but we also know grace can come to us from the adversity of breakup and the often-subsequent new love that emerges. Forme, I think his telling phrase is that sacraments are not an instrument of discipline but an instrument of love and grace. Who can change the exclusion of divorced from Eucharist? We, the church can. If we just do that, allow the

Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without gettingtired. How does a lamp burn? Through the continuousinput of small drops of oil. If the drops of oil run out, the light of the lamp will cease, and the bridegroom will say, “Idonotknowyou”(Matt.25:12).Whatarethesedropsof oil in our lamps? They are the small things of daily life: faithfulness, small words of kindness, a thought for others, our way of being silent, of looking, of speaking, and of acting. These are the true drops of love that keep yourreligiouslifeburninglikealivingflame.Mother Teresa
